Abstract

Curly red chili (Capsicum annuum L.) is a strategic horticultural commodity in Indonesia, vital for both food security and rural livelihoods. In East Payakumbuh Subdistrict, West Sumatra, it serves as a primary income source for local farmers. However, the supply chain faces significant challenges, including price volatility, constrained market access, and a high dependence on intermediaries, which collectively erode farmer bargaining power. Applying the Structure-Conduct-Performance (SCP) framework, this study analyzes the market dynamics of curly chili. We collected primary data through in-depth interviews with key supply chain actors farmers, collectors, wholesalers, retailers, and sub-terminal agricultural officers using snowball sampling. Our quantitative analysis employs concentration ratios (CR4), Minimum Efficiency Scale (MES), marketing margins, and farmer’s share to evaluate market efficiency. The findings reveal an oligopsonistic market structure, where four dominant firms control 95.48% of purchases, supported by a high MES of 85.82%. This concentration, coupled with farmers' reliance on these few buyers, results in persistently low farmer bargaining power. Furthermore, marketing channel efficiency is heterogeneous; one distinct channel demonstrates superior efficiency and returns a higher profit share to farmers. These results underscore the imperative for policy measures designed to strengthen farmer cooperatives, reform trading mechanisms, and facilitate direct market linkages to enhance overall supply chain equity and performance.

Abstract

The Indonesian beef trade balance consistently faces a deficit, a structural issue driven by the imbalance between high demand and low domestic production. This study analyzes the factors that determine Indonesia's beef trade deficit from 2013 to 2023. The gap between high consumption growth and limited domestic production capacity has created a chronic dependence on imports, a structural problem that requires focused policy intervention. This research uses a quantitative approach with a multiple linear regression model. It examines the influence of beef production, beef consumption, the rupiah exchange rate against the US dollar, and trade policies on the trade balance. Secondary data were analyzed using classical assumption tests, F-tests, t-tests, and the coefficient of determination. The analysis shows that only the beef production variable has a significant and negative impact on the trade balance. Statistically, every 1,000-ton increase in domestic production can improve the trade deficit by 4.811 thousand US dollars. Meanwhile, the variables for consumption, exchange rates, and trade policies were not found to have a statistically significant effect, although the direction of their relationship aligns with economic theory. These findings highlight that the most effective strategy to overcome the beef trade deficit is to strengthen the fundamentals of the domestic production sector.

Abstract

Abstract

General Background: Sustainable irrigation management depends on both physical infrastructure and active farmer involvement through Water User Associations. Specific Background: The Gede Irrigation Area in Widang District supports intensive rice production, yet participation among HIPPA members remains variable and irrigation networks experience physical maintenance problems. Knowledge Gap: Previous studies report inconsistent findings regarding socioeconomic determinants such as age and family dependents, while evidence concerning HIPPA participation specifically in the Gede Irrigation Area remains limited. Aims: This study analyzed socioeconomic and accessibility factors associated with HIPPA farmer participation in irrigation maintenance using 88 respondents selected through proportional stratified random sampling and multiple linear regression. Results: The model explained 71.0% of participation variance (R² = 0.710; F = 33.014; p < 0.001). Age (B = −0.623; p < 0.001), farming experience (B = 0.286; p < 0.001), land area (B = −1.999; p = 0.014), residence distance (B = −0.008; p < 0.001), and rice-field distance (B = 0.010; p < 0.001) were significant, whereas family dependents were not (B = 0.258; p = 0.579). Novelty: The study jointly evaluates socioeconomic characteristics and physical accessibility within the specific institutional context of three HIPPA groups in the Gede Irrigation Area. Implications: Individual characteristics and accessibility should be considered when designing strategies for irrigation-network maintenance involvement. Highlights: The six-predictor model explained 71.0% of observed variance. Family dependents remained nonsignificant with p = 0.579. Residence distance recorded −0.008, whereas field distance recorded 0.010. Keywords: Farmers, HIPPA, Participation, Irrigation, Maintenance.

Abstract

Agricultural modernization through the use of agricultural tools and machinery became one of the important pathways to improve farm efficiency, especially as Indonesia’s agricultural sector faced pressures from land conversion, an aging farming population, and the weak regeneration of agricultural labor. This article aimed to analyze the level of modern agricultural machinery adoption among Agricultural Business Households (RTUP) in Indonesia and to interpret the challenges of agricultural modernization based on the Agricultural Census data from 2003, 2013, and 2023. This study used a descriptive-comparative quantitative approach by relying on secondary data from publications of Statistics Indonesia, policy documents, and related scientific articles. The analysis was carried out through data tabulation, percentage change calculations, growth rate analysis, and interpretation of factors that hindered technology adoption. The findings showed that the number of RTUP declined from 31.23 million in 2003 to 26.14 million in 2013, before increasing to 28.42 million in 2023. At the same time, the use of modern technology among farmers/RTUP in 2023 only reached around 46.84%, indicating that more than half of agricultural business actors had not been adequately reached by modernization. The low adoption of agricultural machinery was associated with the dominance of older farmers, limited land ownership, lack of capital, low digital literacy, limited infrastructure access, and uneven extension services and machinery assistance. These findings indicated that agricultural modernization could not rely merely on the distribution of machinery, but also required institutional strengthening, operator training, financing schemes, and strategies to encourage the regeneration of young farmers.

Abstract

The European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) represents a significant policy development in global agricultural trade, particularly for commodity-exporting countries such as Indonesia, whose palm oil sector has strong economic linkages with the European Union market. This study examines the impact of EUDR on Indonesia’s palm oil exports to the European Union while considering other economic and policy-related determinants of export performance. A quantitative research approach was employed using annual time-series data covering the period from 2005 to 2024. A dummy variable regression model was utilized to estimate the potential effect of EUDR, while controlling for export levy policy (Tax PE), European Union gross domestic product (EU GDP), palm oil prices, and lagged export values. The results indicate that EUDR has no statistically significant short-term effect on Indonesia’s palm oil exports to the European Union, suggesting that the regulation had not generated a measurable disruption in export performance during the observation period. The export levy policy (Tax PE) also shows a statistically insignificant effect, indicating that domestic fiscal intervention does not substantially determine export outcomes in the short run. Conversely, palm oil prices and lagged export values demonstrate statistically significant effects, confirming the importance of international market conditions and export persistence in explaining export performance. These findings indicate that Indonesia’s palm oil exports remain more strongly influenced by market dynamics than by immediate regulatory intervention. Nevertheless, the potential long-term effects of EUDR warrant continued attention as implementation intensifies, traceability requirements expand, and compliance obligations become increasingly enforced across global palm oil supply chains.
