Abstract

The research of predatory arthropod species diversity in agro-ecosystem is very important because it affects the function of natural enemies in suppressing pest population. Management of paddy through cultivation method can be part of the conservation of predatory arthropods. This study was conducted to analyze and compare the diversity of predatory arthropod with method cultivation conventional and integrated crop management (ICM) and diversity predatory arthropod based on phase growth paddy from cultivation conventional and ICM. The experiment was conducted in lowland rice agro-ecosystem at two plots with conventional cultivation method and ICM. Sampling of predatory Arthropods was done on the phase growth vegetative and generative paddy using net trap, yellow pan trap, and direct observation in the plants. The results showed that the predatory arthropods found were from Insecta and Arachnida class. The species diversity of predatory arthropod at phase growth of generative was higher than vegetative phase both at the conventional and ICM cultivation. Diversity predatory arthropod on the ICM method was higher compared to conventional. Paddy cultivation method with ICM through the rational use of insecticides can be part of conservation for predatory arthropod species.

Abstract

Research on antifeedant activity of n-hexane leaf extract Lantana camara and its active fractions were evaluated for their insecticidal activity against Plutella xylostella larvae. The method included extraction, fractionation, and examination antifeedant leaf extract L. camara and fractions active against P. xylostella larvae.  Extract application was conducted using a residue feeding method. Fractionation of active compounds from extract n-hexane was conducted by liquid vacuum chromatography, using phase silent silicate gel GF254­ and phase mobility n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and methanol (elusion gradient), which produce fractions A, B, C, D, and E.  Extract leaf L. camara and fractions possessed antifeedant activity against P. xylostella larvae. Extract leaf L. camara at concentration of 1% caused larva antifeedant activity up to 78.47%.  Fraction E caused a higher larva antifeedant activity (85,52%) than extract and other fractions did.

Abstract

ABSTRACT A research on behavior of pest S. litura on two varieties of soybean has been done in Blang Manyak Village, Sawang Sub district, North Aceh District from January–May 2013. The research was arranged in a field experiment with two treatments of soybean varieties, that is Kipas Merah and Anjasmoro.  Each treatment was repeated 20 times to obtain 40 units of the experiment. Variables measured included damage intensity of S. litura, trichome density of leaves, yield components, and resistance evaluation. The relationships between yield components and damage intensity of S. litura were analyzed with regression and correlation. The results showed that damage intensity of S. litura on Kipas Merah was lower than that on Anjasmoro. Loss of soybean yield components on both varieties was influenced by the damage intensity of S. litura. There was a negative correlation between damage intensity of S. litura and soybean yield components on both varieties.  Kipas Merah was moderately resistant and Anjasmoro was susceptible against S. litura.  Resistance differences of both varieties were influenced by trichomes density of the leaves.

Abstract

The research was aimed at studying effects of potassium on the development of Aphis glycines populations and soybean yield. The experiment was conducted in Village Rayeuk Naleung, Sub district Tanah Luas, District North Aceh from July to September 2013. The experiment was arranged in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with 3 replicates. The treatment was without fertilizer, potassium fertilizer at a dose of 25 kg/ha K2O, 50 kg K2O/ha and 75 kg K2O/ha. The variables observed were populations of A. glycines and components of yield soybean. The results showed that potassium at doses of 75 kg K2O/ha can reduce populations of A. glycines and soybean yield increase as compared to potassium fertilization at a dose of 25 kg/ha K2O  and 50 kg K2O/ha.

Abstract

The research was aimed at determining a critical period of soybean in competition with weeds. The experiment was conducted in Seunebok Baro Village, Sub-District Cot Girek, District Aceh Utara, from January to May 2013. The experiment was arranged in a randomized complete block design.  Factor evaluated was a period weed competition with 14 levels and three replications.  Variables observed were growth plant component, yield component, and weed compositions.   The results showed that period weed competition affected growth plant component and yield component.   Critical period of soybean variety Kipas Merah in competition with weeds occurred at 2 - 6 weeks after planting.  Dominant weed species were Dichrocephala integrifolia, Mimosa pudica, Ipomoea triloba, Ageratum conyzoides, Cleome rutidosperma, and Axsonopus compressus.  Minimum scale of weed control for soybean variety Kipas Merah can be carried out from 2 until 6 weeks after planting for preventing yield loss.

Abstract

The selection rice of resistant to pests S. oryzae can be done through the utilization of local paddy germplasm. The study aims to determine the level of resistance of local upland rice Aceh to against pest infestation S. oryzae. The results showed that the local paddy rice from upland Aceh has a level resistance from resistance until moderately to susceptible to pest infestations S. oryzae. The rice from varieties Depet classified in the category-resistant, while varieties Putih, Toa, and Bontok classified in the moderate category. Local rice upland Aceh from varieties Pulo Aceh and Tajuk classified in the category of moderate to susceptible to pest attack S. oryzae during storage rice. Results of correlation analysis showed that resistance rice local upland Aceh affected by moisture content (r = 0.864*; P<0.05). Results of correlation analysis showed that positive correlation non significant between resistance with characteristic dimensions of rice such as length (r = 0.106; P> 0.01), negative correlation non significant with wide (r = -0.339; P>0.01), and a positive correlation non significant with ratio (r = 0.167; P>0.01). The content of protein and moisture content of the rice had a positive correlation with the population of adult S. oryzae (moisture content: r = 0.928**; protein: r = 0.884** P<0.01), the percentage of perforated rice (moisture content: r = 0.872* P<0.05; protein: r = 0.945** P<0.01), and the percentage of rice powder (moisture content: r = 0.912**; protein: r = 0.951** P<0.01) during storage

Abstract

The aim of this research is to evaluate the level of susceptibility and damage of rice from local in Musi Rawas Regency, South Sumatera Province to S. oryzae. The experiments revealed that the local rice from Musi Rawas Regency has susceptibility category from moderate to susceptible to S. oryzae infestation. Siam and glutinous rice white are classified are classified as moderate category while rice Ratus, Dayang Rindu, Ambai, Pandak, and Seluang are categorized moderate to susceptible. The Glutinous rice black and Wao are categorized as susceptible to S. oryzae. The susceptibility of local rice in Musi Rawas was affected by the number of F1 S. oryzae (r = 0.966**, P < 0.01) and median development time (r = -0,883**, P < 0.01). The damage of rice affects the rice susceptibility to S. oryzae. The result of correlation analysis showed that there was a very significant positive correlation between susceptibility index and percentage of rice weight loss (r = 0.854**, P < 0,01), percentage of perforated rice (r = 0.955**, P < 0,01) and percentage of rice powder (r = 0.953**, P < 0.01). Abstract

Rhyzopertha dominica is a primary pest which causes damages to stored cereals such as corn, grain, rice, wheat, sorghum, tubers, and starch-containing substrates and packaging made from wood.  They not only cause losses in terms of quantity but also affect quality during storage period through their feeding activities.  The aimed of this research to investigate the level of susceptibility and damage to cereals during the storage period by pest R. dominica. The cereals used in the study were sorghum, wheat, corn, rice grain, white rice, black glutinous rice, and white glutinous rice. The method used in this research was no-choice bioassay with variables observed: number of F1 progeny, median development time and damage cereals. The results revealed that that different kind of cereals had a different level of susceptibility to infestation by R. dominica from moderate to susceptible. Sorghum, corn, rice, white rice, and white glutinous rice were classified as moderate, while wheat was classified as susceptible and black glutinous rice was moderate–susceptible. The highest losses were found in wheat, black glutinous rice, corn, and rice grain while the lowest were found in sorghum, white rice and white glutinous rice. The study showed that cereals that were susceptible may not stored for a long time to minimize the loss of grain weight.ABSTRAK Rhyzopertha dominica tergolong hama primer yang merusak serealia seperti jagung, gabah, beras, gandum, sorgum, umbi, dan substrat mengandung pati serta kemasan yang terbuat dari kayu. Kerusakan serealia selama penyimpanan meliputi kerusakan kuantitas dan kualitas yang disebabkan oleh hama R. dominica. Penelitian bertujuan untuk mengetahui tingkat kerentanan dan kerusakan serealia selama penyimpanan oleh hama R. dominica. Jenis serealia yang digunakan dalam penelitian terdiri dari sorgum, gandum, jagung, gabah, beras putih, beras ketan hitam, dan beras ketan putih. Metode uji tanpa pilihan dengan variabel yang diamati yaitu jumlah F1, median waktu perkembangan, dan kerusakan serealia.  Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa jenis serealia memiliki tingkat kerentanan dari moderat sampai rentan terhadap infestasi hama R. dominica. Serealia dari sorgum, jagung, padi, beras putih, dan beras ketan putih tergolong dalam kategori moderat, sedangkan gandum tergolong dalam kategori rentan, serta beras ketan hitam tergolong moderat–rentan terhadap serangan R. dominica. Tingkat kerusakan serealia seperti persentase serealia berlubang dan persentase bubuk serealia paling tinggi terjadi pada gandum, beras ketan hitam, jagung dan padi sedangkan kerusakan yang terendah yaitu pada sorgum, beras putih, dan beras ketan putih. Penelitian menunjukkan bahwa serealia yang rentan tidak boleh disimpan dalam waktu yang lama untuk meminimalkan kehilangan berat.

Abstract

Damage on rice during storage including damage on quantity and quality is caused by Sitophilus zeamais. The study aim was to evaluate the susceptibility and damage of rice from various rice varieties to the attacks of S. zeamais. Types of rice used in the research were varieties of IR64, IR65, IR66, Ciherang, Mekongga, Rojolele, and Sintanur. The method was with no-choice assay with observed variables were F1 progeny number, the median of development time and rice damage. The results showed that the rice type had different levels on susceptibility to S. zeamais. Rice from IR65, Mekongga, Rojolele, and Sintanur varieties were classified as moderate to susceptible varieties, while IR64 and IR66 were classified as moderate varieties and Ciherang was classified as susceptible variety. A high rice damage occured in the type of rice classified of susceptible to S. zeamais. There was a significant negative correlation between susceptibility index of rice with dimensions of rice width (r = -0.75*, P <0.05) and median of development time of S. zeamais (r = -0.78*, P <0.05) and positive correlation with number of F1 S. zeamais (r = 0.86**, P <0.01) and the percentage of rice powder (r = 0.71**, P <0.01). Rice that is easily attacked by postharvest pest insects should not be stored for long period of time.

Abstract

The research aims to study the effect population density of S. oryzae against population growth and damage of rice. The population density of S. oryzae is 5, 10, 15, and 20 pairs of adult per 250 g rice. The results showed that population density S. oryzae affects pest population growth of S. oryzae, characteristics loses weight of rice, percentage powder of rice, and changes content moisture of rice. The population density S. oryzae as many as 20 pairs of adult per 250 g of rice can increase populations pest S. oryzae, characteristics loses weight of rice, percentage powder of rice, and content moisture of rice. The relationship between population density S. oryzae with a growing population, percentage loses weight, percentage rice hollow, percentage powder of rice, and changes content moisture of rice increased linearly. There is a positive correlation between population density S. oryzae with population growth S. oryzae (r = 0.997**; P < 0.01), the percentage loses weight (r = 0.987*; P < 0.05), the percentage of rice perforated (r = 0.998**; P < 0.01), the percentage powder of rice (r = 0.997**; P < 0.01), and changes content moisture of rice (r = 0.964**; P < 0.01)Keywords: Sitophilus oryzae, population density, population growth, damage rice
