Abstract

The constraint on reasoning ability among Indonesian mathematics students is a pressing issue. Several study results show that students' low mathematical reasoning is due to a lack of conceptual understanding of the material being studied. Probability is one of the materials that can help mathematical reasoning. There is a sample space that requires students' reasoning ability to determine all possible outcomes. This study aims to design a microlearning-based learning on probability material using the culinary tourism context of Prabumulih City that is integrated into student worksheet, which is valid and practical to help students learn the probability in phase E and train their reasoning skills by PMRI (Indonesian Realistic Mathematics Education). This study was a qualitative method of development study type, consisting of two stages: preliminary study and formative evaluation. The subject of this study was 36 tenth-grade. The data collection techniques were observation, tests, and interviews, which were analyzed descriptively. This research produced a student worksheet that was valid and practical and integrated with microlearning media (comic, video) on probability material using the culinary tourism context of Prabumulih City, Indonesia. Based on data analysis, this worksheet can improve students' conceptual understanding and reasoning abilities.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the presentation of trigonometric identities in three textbooks used in different curricula, namely Mathematics 7 for Senior High School (1975 Curriculum), Mathematics for Senior High School/Vocational High School Grade XI Independent Curriculum (2022), and Trigonometry (2nd Edition) by Blitzer (2018). The research method uses content analysis of facts, concepts, principles, and examples of questions and problem-solving questions in these books. The results of the analysis show differences in presentation approaches, where the 1975 Curriculum book presents material in a simple but less systematic manner, the Independent Curriculum combines context but is less consistent, and the Blitzer book presents comprehensive material with a focus on real-world applications. Analysis of questions based on cognitive levels and the PISA framework places the Blitzer book as superior in terms of the variety and depth of questions. These findings are important as material for evaluating and developing textbooks to improve understanding and competitiveness of mathematics education at national and international levels.

Abstract

Mathematical communication is a skill to articulate mathematical ideas through written and verbal expressions. Despite its importance, students often exhibit difficulties in initiating and organizing mathematical ideas, particularly in written form. Prior research highlights the critical role of communication in fostering early algebraic thinking. This study aims to: (1) examine students’ mathematical communication skills and explore how it reflects early algebraic thinking, using the commognitive framework, which encompasses word use, visual mediators, narratives, and routines, and (2) describe statistically the relationship between algebraic thinking and oral communication skills. A descriptive research design with mixed-methods approach was employed, involving 29 eighth-grade students as participants. Data was collected through written tests, and the results were analyzed descriptively. The findings indicate that four students demonstrated excellent communication skills, nine students were categorized as good, 11 students as fair, three students as poor, and two students as very poor. Further analysis showed that students with stronger communication skills more effectively conveyed algebraic ideas. The results also underscore the commognitive framework practical application in enhancing students’ conceptual understanding. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of how students communicate, reason algebraically, and demonstrates the potential of the commognitive framework to support instructional design and skill development in mathematics education.

Geometry learning in schools often remains abstract and makes limited use of contextual resources that are closely connected to students’ daily lives. Cultural heritage holds significant potential as a medium for mathematics instruction, linking geometric concepts to local values. This study examines the geometric concepts embedded in the architecture of the Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II Museum in Palembang and explores its potential as a learning resource within an ethnomathematics framework. Employing a qualitative approach with a modified ethnographic method, the research was conducted in five main stages: initial exploration and informant identification, field data collection, visual and contextual documentation, data analysis, and ethnomathematical interpretation. Data were collected through observations, semi-structured interviews, and visual documentation, analyzed using domain and taxonomic approaches, and verified through source triangulation. The results indicate that the museum’s architectural elements contain concepts of plane figures, solid figures, similarity, symmetry, and geometric transformations, all integrated with local cultural values. The study recommends integrating museums into PjBL and local wisdom-based curricula to enhance student engagement, strengthen cultural identity, and improve teachers’ competencies.

Abstract

The purpose of the research is to analyze the combinatorial argumentation structure of undergraduate students using the Toulmin model. The type of research used in this research is descriptive qualitative. This study involved 93 second-semester undergraduate students in the 2022/2023 academic year at the Department of Mathematics Education, Sriwijaya University. Data collection in this study was through written tests. The undergraduate students were instructed to provide combinatorial argumentation on mathematical proofs related to the binomial theorem. The combinatorial argumentation was then analyzed using the Toulmin model. The results showed that 96% of undergraduate students' combinatorial argumentation skills were at level 2 with the category of badly organized combinatorial argumentation, and most undergraduate students had difficulties in providing claim, evidence, warrant, and backing in combinatorial argumentation. Based on these results, it is suggested that the learning program should focus on the improvement of critical and argumentative thinking skills through guided discussions, problem-based learning, and exercises that encourage exploration and logical justification of each answer given by undergraduate students.
