Abstract

This research examines the metaphorical use of "Magrib"—a term associated with Islamic prayer time—to describe dark skin in Indonesian culture, exploring its psychological, social, and institutional impacts. Grounded in conceptual metaphor theory (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980) and stigma frameworks (Goffman, 1963), the research employed qualitative methods, including semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis, with 30 dark-skinned university students in North Sumatra. Findings revealed that 36.67% of participants faced discrimination linked to the term, while 30% reported internalized stigma, undermining self-esteem. However, 20% reframed "Magrib" as a symbol of empowerment, demonstrating resilience. Critically, 13.33% highlighted institutional failures to address such bias, underscoring the need for policy reforms. The study situates "Magrib" within global colorism discourses (Hall, 2020) but emphasizes its unique cultural resonance in Indonesia, advocating for educational interventions, diversity training, and inclusive media representation. This research contributes to broader efforts to combat language-based stigma and promote inclusivity in multicultural societies by linking linguistic analysis to systemic inequities.

Abstract

This study investigates the perspectives of teacher educators at SMP Putri Cahaya Medan regarding the integration of evidence-based teaching (EBT) into their classroom practices. Amid growing emphasis on utilizing research to enhance education, the gap between educational theory and practical implementation remains a critical concern. Using a mixed-methods approach, including interviews, surveys, and classroom observations, this research explores teacher educators’ attitudes, challenges, and strategies related to EBT. Findings indicate that while educators generally value research-informed practices, they face significant barriers such as time constraints, limited access to research, and conflicts between personal teaching philosophies and empirical findings. However, factors such as institutional support, collaborative learning environments, and contextual adaptation of research findings were identified as key enablers. The study concludes that systemic support and professional development are essential to empower teacher educators in effectively translating research evidence into meaningful teaching practices, thereby bridging the gap between research and classroom application.

Abstract

This study aimed at analyzing the process of classroom interaction between a teacher and students at SMP Negeri 7 Medan from the perspectives of discourse analysis. It focused on how these interactions influence student engagement and learning outcomes. Using a qualitative approach, a 10-minute video recording was observed to identify key verbal and non-verbal communication patterns within the classroom. The interactions were categorized based on teacher-initiated questions, feedback, disciplinary actions, and student-initiated responses. The findings reveal that openended questions and positive reinforcement by the teacher significantly increased student participation. Conversely, disciplinary actions, though minimal, temporarily reduced engagement but improved classroom behavior. The study concludes that teacher-student communication plays a vital role in creating a productive learning environment and recommends further integration of collaborative learning strategies to enhance student involvement. This research contributes to the existing body of literature on classroom management and effective communication in Indonesian public schools.

Abstract

The research aims to analyze differences in students' mathematical problem solving abilities through the picture and picture learning model assisted by media and given regular learning, analyze differences in students' mathematics learning motivation through the picture and picture learning model assisted by video media and given regular learning, analyze the interaction between learning and ability students' initial abilities on students' mathematical problem solving abilities, and analyzing the interaction between learning and students' initial abilities on students' mathematics learning motivation at SDN 100312 Pargarutan Jae Tapanuli Selatan. The sample was determined as 62 people consisting of 2 (two) classes. The research design used in this research is an experimental design with a 2x3 factorial. The results of the research concluded that students' mathematical problem-solving abilities through the picture and picture learning model assisted by video media were better than if they were given regular learning at SD Negeri 100312 Pargarut.an Jae Tapanuli Selatan. Students' motivation to learn mathematics through the picture and picture learning model assisted by video media is better than being given regular learning at SD Negeri 100312 Pargarutan Jae Tapanuli Selatan. There is an interaction between learning and students' initial abilities on students' mathematical problem-solving abilities at SD Negeri 100312 Pargarutan Jae Tapanuli Selatan.
