Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the chemical representation of chemical bonds in three chemical textbooks. Chemical studies are basically related to three types of chemical representations: macro, submicro and symbolic. In this study a detailed review was carried out and could define the chemical representations in school textbooks to improve students' understanding of chemistry. A detailed analysis reveals five criteria for evaluating chemical representations which are included in three detailed chemical textbooks revealing five criteria for evaluating the chemical representation used in school textbooks. These criteria (C1-C5) are: (C1) type of representation; (C2) interpretation of surface features; (C3) their relationship with the text; (C4) the existence and characteristics of a statement; (C5) the level of correlation between components consisting of several representations. The five criteria include the basic elements needed to utilize chemical representations that are better in understanding chemistry. These five criteria can also be used for analysis of existing school textbooks and as a tool for authors in designing new chemistry textbooks

Abstract

Traditional Chemistry Laboratories, such as acid-base reactions, are hard to demonstrate for present-day students in their lab classes when they need to have the knowledge exchange we had, graduating (and teaching) with mortar boards lined up and ready for weddings. The Evaluation Of The Digital Platform “pH Master” For Enhancing Chemistry Student Performance Through A Virtual Imitation of Traditional Lab Practices The study used Akker's research and development model, including initial studies, product design, testing products, and trials. Validation was done using the Aiken formula by two expert validators and three practitioners for all items with a V value greater than 0.87. Surveys for needs analysis involved 45 students, and the learning effects were assessed with 90 students across three schools. Results Students responded favourably to the pH Master app and perceived ineffable pedagogical value. Most students agreed on the necessity of doing practical activities about what was being learned, and almost all also had trouble understanding study materials specifically related to acids and bases. The results showed a statistically higher mean n-gain value in the experimental group than in control one (0.6622 versus 0.5691) by independent t-test across three schools at p < 0,001 significance level between the two groups. This then confirms that the media created did support student learning. This study highlights the potential of the pH Master app to enhance student learning experience and active involvement in chemical education, which suggests a promising approach towards digitalising conventional practical work.

Abstract

The Virtual STEM Laboratory is a contextual experimental simulation learning tool that integrates science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) concepts. This study aims to investigate the Virtual STEM Laboratory's effectiveness in enhancing high school students' STEM literacy and creativity. STEM literacy is defined as the ability of a student to apply, identify, and integrate STEM concepts to solve complex problems and innovate in various areas. Meanwhile, creativity refers to the capability to generate novel and valuable ideas or solutions. The study used an experimental design with a control group to compare the effectiveness of the Virtual STEM Laboratory. In addition, students' STEM literacy and creativity were measured using posttest scores. The results showed that the experimental group had higher STEM literacy and creativity scores compared to the control group, which indicates the effectiveness of the Virtual STEM Laboratory. The study found that the Virtual STEM Laboratory improved STEM literacy as measured by the independent t-test and Kruskal Wallis test with a significance value of 0.000. This suggests that the experimental group had better STEM literacy skills than the control group. The Virtual STEM Laboratory was also found to be effective in enhancing student creativity as measured by the independent t-test with a significance value of 0.000, which implies that the experimental group generated more novel and valuable ideas than the control group. The study confirms the Virtual STEM Laboratory's effectiveness in enhancing high school students' STEM literacy and creativity. The Virtual STEM Laboratory is a valuable tool that can improve students' STEM literacy and creativity, thus contributing to their academic and professional development. Further studies can be conducted to explore the potential of the Virtual STEM Laboratory in enhancing other aspects of STEM education.

Abstract

The science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) approach is one of the approaches to teaching integrative science contextually and to promote science literacy, which is identified to remain low among Indonesian students. Applying STEM projects to grade 8 students has been challenging during the pandemic. Thus, there is a need to develop an online STEM project that accommodates learning at home or distance learning, is suitable during the pandemic, and incorporates training to improve science literacy. Therefore, we developed a STEM@Home Learning Design by adopting the Flower STEM-Approach Design using the topic of vibration, wave, and sound. This study aims to reveal the validity of the learning design by involving 44 reviewers (lecturers and teachers), followed by the practical test run by 117 reviewers of lecturers, teachers, and student teachers majoring in science education. A questionnaire consisting of 30 items on learning design, instructional setup, and student competencies was distributed online. On average, the respondents scored 4 to 5 on a 5-point scale of the STEM@Home Learning Design in each indicator (86.3%). It can be concluded that the STEM@Home Learning Design is feasible to proceed to the empirical study.
