Abstract

This study is entitled “The Translation of Cultural Terms in The Balinese Folktales”. This study is aimed at to identify the categories of cultural words and describe about translation procedure. The data were taken directly from Balinese Folktales in internet. Documentation method was used as the method in collecting data; finding the cultural words, note taking and classifying. In analyzing the data, qualitative method was applied. In presenting the analysis, this study used descriptive method. The main theory was proposed by Newmark (1988:95). There was also the other theory by Newmark (1988:45) as the theory of translation procedures. The results of this study showed that the most used types of cultural words found in this study were ecology, material culture and social culture. In connection with translation procedure, there were only three types of translation procedure found in Balinese folktales. The translation procedures used were Literal translation, cultural equivalent, and descriptive equivalent. By translating books from Balinese to English can make other people who read and learn about Balinese culture understand easily. Also, it is the media to introduce Balinese culture to the world.

Abstract

This article entitled Penilaian Keterampilan Berbicara dalam Pembelajaran Bahasa Indonesia sebagai Bahasa Asing. The aim of this research is to assess learners’ speaking skill in learning Indonesian language after an active learning process had been done that motivates the learners to actively involved, thus the learners can dominate the learning activity and can achieve the basic competency which contained in the lesson plan. The main theory of this research is a rubric design theory proposed by Airasian (2005). The data was collected by using observation and test methods. The techniques used in this articles are check list, written test, and spoken test. The result of this research showed that 80% of the learners actively involved and the aim of learning activity was attained. The learners’ achievement of grammar comprehension is 60% and the comprehension of learning topics that were given in active learning process is 85%. Some factors that obstructed the learners in both aspects mentioned above are the inability of the learners in differentiating and comparing the grammar of their mother language and the Indonesian grammar, the learners’ activities and schedules that made them unable to attend the whole ten meetings before the assessment process by using check list technique, written and spoken test was done.

Abstract

Artikel ini berjudul “Keterampilan Menulis Wacana Argumentasi Berbahasa Inggris dengan Metode ESA pada Mahasiswa Level Post Intermediate di STIE Triatma Mulya”. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui (1) kemampuan menulis wacana argumentasi pada mahasiswa STIE Triatma Mulya dan (2) faktor-faktor penghambat mahasiswa dalam menulis wacana argumentasi. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori pembelajaran dan pengajaran bahasa yang dikemukakan oleh Brown (2007) sebagai teori utama. Data-data dalam penelitian ini dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan metode observasi, wawancara, dokumentasi, dan tes. Teknik yang digunakan, yaitu check list, catat, rekam, dan tes tulis. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kemampuan mahasiswa dalam menulis wacana argumentasi mengalami peningkatan sebesar 4,14 %. Aspek-aspek yang mengalami peningkatan dalam tulisan mahasiswa adalah alat-alat kohesi gramatikal, ketepatan kata, dan mekanik. Namun, kategori tata bahasa masih memerlukan perhatian lebih banyak. Hal ini ditunjukkan oleh penurunan kemampuan mahasiswa dalam menggunakan tata bahasa sebesar 0,34 %. Faktor-faktor yang menghambat mahasiswa dalam menulis wacana argumentasi adalah jenis tulisan itu sendiri, tata bahasa, dan pilihan kata.

Abstract

In dealing with problems while translating, translators need to apply translation strategies. It involves finding equivalents which are similar in meaning. The aims of this study are investigating and analyzing the syntactic strategies and equivalents of English non finite verbs which are translated into Indonesian. This study employed descriptive qualitative method. The data are 130 complex sentences taken from two feature articles in National Geographic Magazines pulished in English and Indonesian on December 2018. The result of study shows that the syntactic strategies found are loan calque, transposition, phrase structure change, clause structure change, unit shift. and sentence structure change. In addition, formal equivalences are mostly found in translation, in comparison with the dynamic equivalences. It can be concluded that the syntactic strategy is applied by the translators to get natural translated text in TL by selecting linguistic equivalences without changing the meaning. The formal equivalence is used when translators maintain the message by focusing on form and content. While dynamic equivalence is applied when the translator does not maintain the form and content but focus more on sense of translation by using natural equivalence which is closest in meaning and shows similar concept in TL.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan mencari jawaban atas tiga permasalahan yang muncul terhadap aplikasi sufiks {-kan} dalam BI; i) bagaimana mekanisasi pembentukan verba bersufiks {-kan} BI? ii) bagaimana struktur argumen verba bersufiks {-kan} dan iii) bagaimana struktur logis dan makna sufiks {-kan) BI? Data penunjang analisis dipetik dari empat buah novel Indonesia yang ditulis oleh Maria A. Sarjono dan satu oleh Hirata. Dan teori yang dipakai untuk membedah permasalahan proses morfosintaksis ini adalah teori morfologi yang ditulis oleh Katamba dan pembicaraan makna akan mengaplikasikan Tatabahasa Peran dan Acuan. Hasil analisis menunjukkan; i)verba bersufiks {-kan} dapat diturunkan dari bentuk dasar; prakatagorial, adjektiva, adverbia, verba intransitif, bi-intransitif, dan mono intransitif. Proses morfosintaksis  pembentukan verba bersufiks {-kan perubahan fungsi gramatikal. Proses tersebut mencakup; pengausatifan, pengaplikativan yang mencakup makna benefaktif, lokatif, instrumen dan terakhir adalah proses koorporasi. ii) Verba bersufiks {-kan} memiliki struktur argumen, seperti; mematikan (x, y)à (agen, pasien), membawakan (x, y, z)à (afektor, benefaktor, tema), menempelkan (x, y)(z)à(afektor, tema)(lokatif). iii) Sufiks {-kan} BI mengandung makna; memberi, mendapatkan, memindahkan posisi, menempatkan, menyampaikan, perpindahan kepemilikan dan kausatif.

Abstract

This article discussed about morphosyntax that deals with the combination of morphology and syntax. The article was aimed to find out the derivational suffixes forming adjectives and the syntactic functions of the adjectives found in the data source. The data of this article were taken by library research method and note-taking technique from the novel Forrest Gump, which published in 157 pages and 26 chapters by Pocket Books in 1994. This novel is written by Winston Groom. The collected data were analyzed descriptive qualitatively based on the theory of Morphology and Syntax by Quirk, et al (1985). This article revealed that there were the attachment of suffix {-ful}, {-less}, {-ly}, {-y}, {-al}, {-ial}, {-ic} and {-ous} changed the base noun into adjective, it is called denominal adjectives. Then, deverbal adjectives which made the word class changed from verb into adjective, there were the attachment of suffix {-able} and {-ive}. Meanwhile, for the syntactic functions there were three types found, they are attributive, predicative and postpositive.

Abstract

This article entitled Writing Skill of English Argumentative Discourse Using Engage, Study, and Activate Method on Post Intermediate Level's Student in STIE Triatma Mulya. The aims of this study are to find out (1) the students competence in writing argumentative discourse and (2) the factors hindered students in witing argumentative discourse. The main theory used in this research is the theory from Brown (2007). The data was collected using observation, interview, documentation, and tes method. The tehniques used were check list, note, and written test.  The result shows that the students’ competence in writing argumentative discourse improved as much as 4,14 %. Some aspects that showed improvements are gramatical cohesive devices, word choice, and mechanic. But, grammar needs to be improved, because this aspect decrease as much as 0, 34 %. The factors hindered students competence in writing argumentative discourse are the types of discourse itself, grammar, and word choice

Abstract

This research was carried out based upon the habitual speaking attitude of Singaporeans in Singapore Colloquial English by adding discourse particles ah and lah. Data were gathered from Mothership YouTube channel in Mothership Hits the Streets section from January to December 2020. There were two objectives; finding out the types and explaining the assigned functions of discourse particles ah and lah of SCE found in Mothership videos. It was conducted through applying qualitative approach which observation, document analysis, discourse analysis, and descriptive-interpretative method were employed. Theories applied to this research were discourse particles classification by Wong (2004), roles of discourse particles by Low & Deterding (2003), and context of situation by Halliday & Hasan (1985). The results showed that four types of ah and three types of lah were used by Singaporeans as seen in the videos; perlocutionary ah, vocative ah, emphatic ah, ah as question marker, impositional lah, propositional lah, and persuasive lah. Two functions were identified; utterance-final marker and audible comma particle. On the frequencies, 38 occurrences of particle ah and 62 occurrences of particle lah.

Abstract

Abstract This research aimed at analyzing illocutionary acts found in Martin Luther King Jr. “I Have a Dream” Speech. This research implemented a descriptive qualitative method. The data source of this research was the speech of Martin Luther King Jr. uploaded on YouTube. The data were collected through note-taking techniques. The data were analyzed descriptively through data presentation and elaboration. The finding shows that there are five classifications of the illocutionary act, namely representative, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative. Furthermore, the finding shows that there are twelve functions of the illocutionary acts found in the speech entitled “I Have a Dream” delivered by Martin Luther King Jr. They are claiming, reporting, complaining, commanding, requesting, advising, recommending, promising, expressing pleasure, expressing dislike, expressing sorrow, and naming. Keywords: illocutionary act, classification, function, speech Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis tindak ilokusi yang terdapat dalam Pidato Martin Luther King Jr. “I Have a Dream”. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Sumber data penelitian ini adalah pidato Martin Luther King Jr yang diunggah di YouTube. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan teknik mencatat. Data dianalisis secara deskriptif melalui penyajian dan elaborasi data. Temuan menunjukkan bahwa ada lima klasifikasi tindak ilokusi, yaitu representatif, direktif, komisif, ekspresif, dan deklaratif. Selanjutnya, temuan menunjukkan bahwa terdapat dua belas fungsi tindak ilokusi yang ditemukan dalam pidato berjudul “I have a dream” yang disampaikan oleh Martin Luther King Jr. Mereka mengklaim, melaporkan, mengeluh, memerintah, meminta, menasihati, merekomendasikan, menjanjikan, mengekspresikan kesenangan, mengekspresikan ketidaksukaan, mengekspresikan kesedihan, dan penamaan.
