Abstract

Purpose − This study aims to analyze the stereotypical representation of women in the film Polite Society through Roland Barthes' semiotic approach by examining eight scenes that demonstrate gender construction through denotative, connotative, and mythical signs. Method − This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach. Descriptive analysis aims to systematically and comprehensively present data, facts, and phenomena. The analysis specifically focuses on scenes that depict stereotypes of women. The data consist of screenshots from selected scenes as well as excerpts of dialogue, which are used to interpret the meanings conveyed in each scene. Findings − The results of the study show that the film represents various stereotypes that limit women, such as the assumption that they are not suitable for working in risky fields, are considered emotional, must obey the family structure, and make marriage the main achievement. Through language, gestures, social relationships, and family dynamics, the film shows how patriarchal values work subtly and are normalized. These findings confirm that Polite Society not only provides entertainment, but also builds a critical discourse about the limitations of women in popular culture.

Abstract

This study discusses the communication and cultural adaptation of Indonesian diaspora students who are studying abroad. The background of this research is rooted in the need to understand how students adjust to their surrounding environment and how they experience cultural adaptation while pursuing education overseas, where the culture and language differ from those of their hometowns. It is undeniable that Indonesian students face various challenges when studying abroad, such as adapting to a new environment, unfamiliar habits, and different patterns of interaction with groups or individuals. These challenges are influenced by several factors, including time, climate, academic environment, food, ethics, language, location, and cultural values, all of which have distinct characteristics. Barriers to communication adaptation can be observed in the ongoing communication process. The influencing factors include the communicators’ linguistic ability, the clarity of messages, the communication media used, the characteristics of the communicants, and the level of reciprocity within the communication interaction. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method, with Indonesian doctoral diaspora students at McGill University, Canada, serving as the research subjects. The results show that respondents needed time to adjust to their environment before they were eventually able to adapt well. The study concludes that adaptation, particularly the ability to understand the local culture and language plays a crucial role in enabling students to adjust successfully.

Abstract

This article explains how the Shopee ad "Dari Kami #UntukPerempuan" uses femvertising to highlight the issue of women's rights and even encourage them to participate in e-commerce. The purpose of this study is to determine if the gender-based kesetaraan in the aforementioned campaign has been used as an autistic dukungan or as a komodifikasi strategy. Using a deskriptif kualitatif method and narrative analysis using a modified Todorov structure, the study examines representation in three primary narratives: sexual harassment, body shaming, and gender prejudice in the workplace. The analysis's findings indicate that the journey from ketidakadilan to dukungan and pemulihan is facilitated by iklan, which also highlights the importance of social solidarity as a means of promoting women's rights. However, research also indicates that there is a potential for conflict if feministic values are undermined in the pursuit of commercial goals. This article contributes to the conversation on the differences between the use of symbols and marketing strategies in femvertising.
