Abstract

This study aims to analyze the representation of the populist claim in the political advertisement of the Ganjar-Ma’fud duo, titled "Vote for Number 3, Champion the People," during the 2024 Presidential Election. Using Roland Barthes' semiotics approach, this research explores the meanings embedded in the advertisement, focusing on three main aspects: denotation, connotation, and myth. The analysis covers 3 scenes in the advertisement, highlighting the role of celebrities as symbols of the people. The findings reveal that the advertisement strategically employs celebrities to create an image of the candidates as close to the public. At the denotative level, celebrities are shown in situations depicting togetherness with the general public. The connotation that arises is that these celebrities represent the entire populace, giving the impression that the Ganjar-Ma’fud pair genuinely represents the people's interests. The myth created reinforces the narrative that celebrities, due to their popularity, possess the capability to represent and advocate for the people's aspirations in the political arena. This study underscores the significance of television as an effective political campaign tool, despite the growing dominance of social media. The findings provide insights into political communication strategies that leverage celebrity popularity to garner public attention and support. The study suggests further exploration into the long-term impact of using celebrities in political campaigns on public trust and the quality of democracy.

Abstract

Purpose − This study aims to analyze the stereotypical representation of women in the film Polite Society through Roland Barthes' semiotic approach by examining eight scenes that demonstrate gender construction through denotative, connotative, and mythical signs. Method − This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach. Descriptive analysis aims to systematically and comprehensively present data, facts, and phenomena. The analysis specifically focuses on scenes that depict stereotypes of women. The data consist of screenshots from selected scenes as well as excerpts of dialogue, which are used to interpret the meanings conveyed in each scene. Findings − The results of the study show that the film represents various stereotypes that limit women, such as the assumption that they are not suitable for working in risky fields, are considered emotional, must obey the family structure, and make marriage the main achievement. Through language, gestures, social relationships, and family dynamics, the film shows how patriarchal values work subtly and are normalized. These findings confirm that Polite Society not only provides entertainment, but also builds a critical discourse about the limitations of women in popular culture.

Abstract

The development of football community media in Indonesia reveals an interesting phenomenon: it is the leading choice for football fans to obtain information and news. Building on the development of football community media in Indonesia, this study examines the conditions, challenges, and problems faced by such media in 2022 - 2025. Five community media are the focus of this research: Ongisnade, Simamaung, Football Fandom, Sleman Football, and Emosi Jiwaku—data collection through interviews and document study. The results showed that the development of football community media in Indonesia occurred during the digital media era. The ease of producing and distributing media has encouraged the establishment of a football community media. The emergence of football community media in Indonesia is rooted in the demand for information and news about clubs. The problems faced by the football community media include securing funding to ensure sustainability, managing and filling content with human resources, and the critical attitude shown in reporting on clubs, which can trigger bad relations with club management. The football community's media showcases the rise of well-informed football fans. Football fans' ability to manage the media within the football community demonstrates that they in Indonesia have transformed, becoming well-educated and informed.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze how public discourse on social media shapes perceptions of the quality and reputation of SD Muhammadiyah Sapen Yogyakarta. The dataset consists of 1,192 user comments collected from Instagram posts by @folkyogya and @gnfi. A corpus-based text analysis approach was employed using Voyant Tools, including Cirrus, Trends, Bubblelines, Mandala, ScatterPlot (t-SNE), and TermsBerry, to examine lexical patterns, semantic relationships, and discourse structures. The findings reveal that public discourse is constructed in a multidimensional manner through dominant keywords, shifting thematic focus, and clustered discourse patterns reflecting complex user interactions. Perceptions of the school are shaped by three main dimensions: institutional identity, child-oriented concerns, and competition for educational access. The results demonstrate that institutional reputation is not solely formed through formal communication, but through participatory culture, electronic word of mouth (e-WOM), and virality, which accelerate the dissemination and reproduction of meaning in digital spaces. This study offers a theoretical contribution by integrating these three concepts into a unified framework of digital discourse analysis, and a methodological contribution through the application of corpus-based analysis in social media communication research.

Abstract

This study discusses the communication and cultural adaptation of Indonesian diaspora students who are studying abroad. The background of this research is rooted in the need to understand how students adjust to their surrounding environment and how they experience cultural adaptation while pursuing education overseas, where the culture and language differ from those of their hometowns. It is undeniable that Indonesian students face various challenges when studying abroad, such as adapting to a new environment, unfamiliar habits, and different patterns of interaction with groups or individuals. These challenges are influenced by several factors, including time, climate, academic environment, food, ethics, language, location, and cultural values, all of which have distinct characteristics. Barriers to communication adaptation can be observed in the ongoing communication process. The influencing factors include the communicators’ linguistic ability, the clarity of messages, the communication media used, the characteristics of the communicants, and the level of reciprocity within the communication interaction. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method, with Indonesian doctoral diaspora students at McGill University, Canada, serving as the research subjects. The results show that respondents needed time to adjust to their environment before they were eventually able to adapt well. The study concludes that adaptation, particularly the ability to understand the local culture and language plays a crucial role in enabling students to adjust successfully.

Abstract

This article explains how the Shopee ad "Dari Kami #UntukPerempuan" uses femvertising to highlight the issue of women's rights and even encourage them to participate in e-commerce. The purpose of this study is to determine if the gender-based kesetaraan in the aforementioned campaign has been used as an autistic dukungan or as a komodifikasi strategy. Using a deskriptif kualitatif method and narrative analysis using a modified Todorov structure, the study examines representation in three primary narratives: sexual harassment, body shaming, and gender prejudice in the workplace. The analysis's findings indicate that the journey from ketidakadilan to dukungan and pemulihan is facilitated by iklan, which also highlights the importance of social solidarity as a means of promoting women's rights. However, research also indicates that there is a potential for conflict if feministic values are undermined in the pursuit of commercial goals. This article contributes to the conversation on the differences between the use of symbols and marketing strategies in femvertising.

Abstract

This study addresses the fragmentation of prior research on echo chambers, social media, and political campaigns by providing a systematic bibliometric mapping of their intellectual structure and evolving trends. Using a bibliometric approach, this study analyzes 238 documents indexed in the Scopus database published between 2014 and 2024. The findings demonstrate a marked acceleration in publication output, particularly after 2018, reflecting the increasing centrality of digital platforms in political communication research. Geographically, the United States dominates scholarly production, followed by the United Kingdom and several European countries, indicating a concentration of knowledge production in Western contexts with limited representation from the Global South. Disciplinary analysis reveals the dominance of Social Sciences and Computer Science, underscoring the hybridization of political communication and computational approaches. Furthermore, co-occurrence network analysis identifies three major thematic clusters: (1) individual-level processes, including selective exposure and affective polarization; (2) political actors, campaign strategies, and electoral dynamics; and (3) platform-based communication, discourse, and the diffusion of misinformation. These results suggest a significant shift from early descriptive studies toward more complex, integrative, and data-driven analyses of digital political environments. This study contributes by bridging fragmented strands of literature and offering a comprehensive global overview that highlights both the consolidation of dominant research agendas and the need for more geographically diverse and theoretically integrated future research.
