Abstract

Economic development has serious implications for environmental sustainability, affecting the well-being of people in a country. This problem requires initiatives to implement green economy policies with the principle of involving economic development in line with the efficient use of natural resources so as to achieve a good quality of human life. This study aims to analyze the effect of green economy implementation on the quality of human life with descriptive and inferential analysis methods. This research uses multiple linear regression analysis and K-Means Clustering. With the K-Means Clustering method, three provincial clusters with the lowest to highest average Human Development Index (HDI) were obtained. The results showed that the area of forest land cover and poverty line significantly reduced HDI. However, Gross Regional Domestic Product per Capita at Current Prices significantly increases HDI. This study highlights the crucial role of green economy in shaping development pathways that are not only focused on economic growth, but also on maintaining ecological balance and improving human quality of life.

Abstract

Migration plays an important role in shaping socio-economic dynamics across provinces in Indonesia. This study aims to analyze the impact of shocks in socio-economic indicators—namely the Open Unemployment Rate (OUR) and inflation—on net migration during the period 1990–2022. Annual data from Statistics Indonesia (BPS) is analyzed using the Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) approach. The results show that net migration responds dynamically to socio-economic shocks, with system stability reached around the 30th year. Shocks to the unemployment rate have a more dominant long-term impact compared to inflation. The Variance Decomposition Analysis (VDA) confirms the relatively greater contribution of OUR to the variability of net migration. These findings support the push-pull theory of migration and fill a gap in national-level empirical studies. Policymakers need to design adaptive responses to shocks in unemployment and inflation to reduce migration pressures and promote balanced regional development.

Abstract

Energy plays a fundamental role in driving global sustainability, encompassing social, economic, and environmental dimensions. The issue of access to adequate and affordable modern energy remains a crucial problem in various countries, including Indonesia. This condition reflects energy poverty, which has a widespread impact on all aspects of community life. This study investigates the convergence of energy poverty across provinces in Indonesia during the period 2016–2024, using balanced panel data covering 306 observations. This analysis utilizes 34 provinces to ensure data consistency throughout the research period, particularly for the development of the Multidimensional Energy Poverty Index (MEPI). Sigma convergence is assessed based on the evolution of cross-sectional variation in MEPI, while beta convergence is tested using spatial dynamic panel analysis. The research results indicate that energy poverty across provinces experienced both sigma and beta convergence. Per capita GRDP, urbanization rate, energy prices, higher education level, and regional spatial influence play an important role in accelerating the process of energy poverty convergence. Based on these findings, the government is expected to strengthen policies that support the expansion of access to modern energy, as well as encourage the role of socioeconomic factors to accelerate the process of energy equalization across regions.

Abstract

Tourism plays a strategic role in driving regional economic growth through job creation, cultural preservation, and equitable development. East Java Province recorded the highest number of domestic tourist visits in 2024; however, not all districts and cities have received digital exposure and infrastructure support proportional to their tourism potential. This study analyzes digital visibility, infrastructure development, and tourist arrivals across 38 districts and cities, and classifies them using descriptive analysis, Pearson correlation, and K-Means Clustering. Data sources include Google Trends (digital tourism interest), Nighttime Light imagery (infrastructure development), and domestic tourist statistics from BPS. The results identify four clusters with distinct characteristics, with Surabaya City showing high performance in all aspects, while other regions demonstrate strong digital interest but limited infrastructure. The study recommends targeted digital promotion, infrastructure enhancement for high-demand destinations, and strengthened tourism attractiveness in emerging areas, contributing to more efficient, inclusive, and sustainable tourism development.

Abstract

The escalation of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions has emerged as a critical environmental concern, particularly in the context of Indonesia’s pursuit of sustainable development. This study aims to forecast CO2 emissions in Indonesia using annual time-series data spanning 1967–2023. Three methodological approaches are employed: an artificial neural network (ANN), an autoregressive model with exogenous variables (ARIMAX), and a hybrid ARIMAX-ANN model. The dataset comprises Gross Domestic Product obtained from the World Bank, along with per capita CO2 emissions, per capita natural gas consumption, and per capita hydropower consumption sourced from Our World in Data. The findings of this research demonstrate that the hybrid ARIMAX-ANN model provides the best forecasting performance, as evidenced by the lowest RMSE, MAPE, and MAE values among the other two models. These results suggest that the hybrid model is currently the most reliable for predicting CO2 emissions in the Indonesian context. The study enriches the expanding literature on emission forecasting by providing empirical evidence to support data-driven policymaking for climate change mitigation and sustainable energy development in Indonesia.

Abstract

The downstream policy is implemented to encourage Indonesia’s processed nickel products. Processed nickel under Harmonized System (HS) 75 is a value-added product that has potential for the Indonesian economy. Globally, Indonesia’s exports of nickel HS 75 have increased significantly. This increase occurred after the implementation of the downstream policy. However, the increase in export volume did not occur uniformly across all trading partner countries, hence further analysis of the implemented downstream policy is necessary. This study aims to analyse the effect of the down streaming policy and macroeconomic variables such as the destination country’s GDP per capita, real prices, exchange rate, and the RCA index significantly affect the export volume of nickel (HS 75), while population and the downstream policy do not have significant effect. These findings indicate that the downstream policy has not yet effectively increased export volumes to trading partner countries.
