Abstract

Background: Anemia is a significant health issues among adolescent girls, negatively impacting their life cycle. Bogor City has an anemia prevalence of 28%. The Indonesian Ministry of Health has introduced a digital pocketbook "Prevention of Anemia for Pregnant Women and Adolescent Girls", an educational tool. Objectives: This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of the digital pocketbook in improving the knowledge and attitudes of adolescent girls about preventing anemia. Methods: This quasi-experiment study used Pretest-Posttest with Control Group design. Samples were purposively chosen from female students in four junior high schools in Bogor (40 students per group per school). Group 1 received Digital Pocket Book with Presentatio, Group 2 received Digital Pocket Book only, and Group 3 served as Control. Changes in knowledge and attitude scores before and after the intervention were analyzed using Wilcoxon test, while the difference among the three groups were tested using Kruskall-Wallis tests with post-hoc analysis (p-value<0.05). Results: Before the intervention, knowledge and attitudes score  was relatively homogeneous (p-value=0.068 and 0.695). After the intervention, Group 1 and 2 showed significant improvements compared to the control. Group 1's knowledge increased significantly (3.01 ± 3.613), followed by Group 2 (1.78 ± 2.947). Attitude improvement was also highest in Group 1 (5.10 ± 7.947), followed by Group 2 (2.65 ± 7.118). Additionally, 95% of respondents rated the digital pocketbook as excellent. Conclusions: The digital pocketbook iss considered effective and informative in improving the knowledge and attitudes of adolescent girls about preventing anemia, regardless of additional explanation.

Abstract

Background: Obesity is a complex public health issue influenced by multiple determinants, including environmental factors that promote excessive calorie intake and physical inactivity, known as obesogenic environments. Objective: This literature review is to broaden understanding the environmental determinants of obesity in Indonesia. Method: A narrative literature review was conducted focusing on studies published between 1999 and 2024. Sources were retrieved from databases including PubMed, WHO Global Health Observatory, and national health surveys such as Riskesdas. The ecological framework by Swinburn et al. (1999) was used to analyse environmental influences on obesity. Results: Findings indicate that built and food environments play significant roles in shaping obesity patterns in many places. Studies show increasing obesity prevalence in both urban and rural Indonesia, with environment-related factors such as food availability, urbanization, and reduced physical activity opportunities contributing to this trend. Conclusion: Food environment, land use and physical infrastructure were identified as potential proxies for obesogenic environments in Indonesia. Further studies are needed to evaluate and validate these proxies to support the development of environments conducive to healthy lifestyles and to reduce obesity prevalence.

Abstract

Background: Poor adolescent diet quality is influenced by family eating habits, media promoting unhealthy foods, and body image pressures, leading to disordered eating, neglect of health considerations, and obesity. Even in controlled environments like boarding schools. Objective: This study aims to assess association between eating behavior and dietary quality among students in Taruna Nusantara Senior High School (TN-SHS), Indonesia. Methods: A cross-sectional study with 200 subjects aged 15-18 was conducted in January 2024. Participants were purposively sampled from TN-SHS boarding school. Data was collected using the Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire (DEBQ) and Diet Quality Index International (DQI-I), along with sociodemographic information, nutritional status, and physical activity. Analysis was performed using SPSS 29, employing multiple linear regression to examine the relationship between eating behaviors and diet quality. Results: There was strong relationship between eating behavior and diet quality on different days, revealing that restrained eating correlates with better diet quality on average days (r=0.158, p=0.026), while external eating is linked to poorer diet quality. The association between eating behavior and diet quality on weekdays is weaker than on weekends. External eating consistently reduces diet quality across all periods (β=–1.380 to –1.854, p<0.01). Males exhibiting lower diet quality (β=–3.021 to –4.904, p≤0.002) and higher pocket money associated with improved diet quality, particularly on weekends (β=–3.633, p=0.021). Conclusion: The study findings highlight the importance of managing external eating behaviors such as emotional eating, social eating, mindless eating, and binge eating, and suggest avenues for targeted interventions to promote healthier dietary habits.

Abstract

The culinary history of Indonesia reflects its rich diversity, influenced by cultural, social, and economic factors. In this context, food norms and practices vary across the country, particularly in terms of food selection and consumption. Food norms refer to cultural expectations and rules surrounding food choices, while food practices include the actual behavior of individuals during consumption. This study aimed to identify, analyze, and understand the differences between food norms and practices based on meal times in urban areas of Indonesia. To achieve this objective, a quantitative method with a cross-sectional design was adopted, utilizing data from the 2018 Indonesian Food Barometer (IFB). The study was conducted in 6 provinces- West Java, East Java, South Sulawesi, West Sumatra, Jakarta, and Bali-, with subjects aged 18 to 35 years. Furthermore, the collected data were analyzed using IBM SPSS statistical software and the McNemar Test. The results showed that there were differences between food norms and food practices at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. In particular, the largest gap occurred at breakfast, where food norms tended to be healthier than actual practices. In addition, consumption patterns at dinner showed a greater influence of social factors compared to other meal times.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to assess the association between Nutrition Fact Panel (NFP) use and diet quality among university students. A comparative cross sectional study was conducted in 2019 among 172 college students living in dormitory of Universitas Indonesia, Depok, Indonesia. Data about socioeconomic and demographic characteristics, food preparation, NFP use and nutritional knowledge were collected through interview using structured questionnaire. Nutritional status was obtained by direct height and weight measurement. Diet quality was measured using Diet Quality Index-International (DQI-I) score, derived from 3x24 hours recall. Finding of this study showed that the characteristics of NFP users and non-users were not differed significantly except for nutritional knowledge in which NFP users were 1.852 times more likely to have good knowledge than NFP non-users (p<0.05; 95% CI:1.009−3.396). The median total diet quality score was categorized as low (44 out of 100). There was no association between NFP use and total diet quality score even after controlling for possible confounder. However, the exploration in each component of diet quality measurement showed adequacy score of calcium was significantly higher in NFP users than non-users (p<0.05). NFP use also positively associated to total variety score (β=0.985; p<0.05). Future nutrition interventions could focus on enhancing the use and understanding of NFP among university students

Abstract

Introduction: The global prevalence of obesity is on the rise, including in Indonesia. High energy intake from sugar is a growing concern worldwide due to its association with weight gain, tooth decay, and non-communicable diseases. A prior study revealed that 10.9% of Indonesian adults consumed energy from sweetened beverages in excess of the WHO recommendation. This study aimed to assess the consumption of sweetened beverages in male and female college students in Indonesia. Method: The study was conducted at Universitas Indonesia and involved 107 subjects aged 19-21 years who resided in student dormitories. Result: The result found the median BMI in female was higher than male. In female, 3 out of 10 students was overweight-obese, while 1 out of 10 in male. Interestingly, the median daily intake of sweetened beverages significantly higher in male than female; 387 (25–1580) vs 246 (0–762) ml/day (p=0.001). Added sugar content in beverages in males was higher than half of Indonesian recommendation (28.4 [1.9–134.4] vs 19.2 [0–61.1]) which contributed to energy as much as 170.9 (12.4–625.7) kcal/ day or about 8.9% of total energy intake than female (108.5 [0–394.4] kcal/day). Compared to Indonesian guideline, 12% of male subjects consumed added sugar higher than 50 g/day. Simultaneously, 7 out of 10 subjects consumed energy from sweetened beverages higher than 10% of their total energy intake (WHO recommendation). The BMI and prevalence of overweight-obese were higher in female, while the sweetened beverage was higher in male. It might be caused by the physical activity in male was higher than female. Although male had higher energy intake from SSB, their energy output through physical activity balanced with energy input. Conclusion: These finding alerted the university as educational institution should take an action to prevent this issue since the prevalence of overweight-obesity and sweetened beverage consumption has occurred in young age.
