Abstract

Heterotrophic bacteria in marine ecosystems have important as decomposer of organic material into the elements essential. This group of bacteria can be found in a variety of habitats including marine sediment. This research aims to isolate the heterotrophic bacteria and the activity against pathogenic (Vibrio alginolyticus, Aeromonas hydrophila and Pseudomonas sp). The research was conducted from November until December 2016. Samples were obtained from the waters of Tanjung Medang, District of North Rupat, Riau Province. Isolation and antagonistic test were conducted at the Laboratory of Marine Microbiology and Biotechnology Department of Marine Sciences Faculty of Fisheries and Marine. In this research was a survey method where heterotrophic bacteria from the sediment were isolated on marine agar medium by pour plate and streak quadran techniques. Activity of the heterotrophic isolate against bacterial pathogens was conducted using diffusion agar on Mueller Hinton Agar (MHA). The number of heterotrophic bacteria ranged from 4,4 × 106 up to 13,5 × 106 CFU/g.Twelve isolates of the sediment bacteria were selected for the antagonism test. However, only nine isolates (Isolate A, C, E, F, O, S, V, W, Z) were able to inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria. One isolate (E) performed the highest ability to inhibit the growth of patogens (V. alginolyticus, A . hydrophila and Pseudomonas sp). Keywords: Isolation, Heterotrophic, Sediment, Antagonism, Pathogenic Bacteria.

Abstract

Abstract The rapid growth of industrial sectors in various countries leads to an increase in greenhouse gas emissions such as carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere. One important aspect of reducing carbon gas is the maintenance of forests and oceans to store carbon. One of the potential marine resources for storing CO2 is the seagrass. Waters of the North Sea Penyengat Island has a community of seagrasses composed by various types, one of which is Enhalus acoroides which has an important role as carbon store. This research was conducted in October-November 2017 in the waters of East Sea of Penyengat Island which aims to find out the condition of density and biomass on sea grass in Above ground and Below ground (rhizoma and root) density to seagrass biomass on seagrass. Data were obtained by using the quadratic transect method performed on 4 stations. The results showed that the density of seagrass in the study location was moderate, where the density of seagrass Station III was higher than other stations. The greatest biomass value is found in the rhizomes and roots of seagrasses in all four stations. Less seagrass areas are anthropogenic, ie station III which has a greater biomass potential than the seagrass area with the opposite condition. Keywords: Global warming, Biomass, Seagrass, Penyengat island.

Abstract

Increased concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere caused the increasing average temperature of the earth globally (global warming) that triggered the climate change. Seagrass is one of the marine resources that considerably potential as a sequester of CO2 (blue carbon) in an effort to mitigate global warming. Trikora beach has seagrass community is composed by different types, one of them is Enhalus acoroides which has an important role as a carbon sink. This study was conducted in May 2016 in Trikora Beach, Bintan, which aims to determine differences of density, the percentage of seagrass coverage and differences in biomass based on a seagrass tissue at the above ground (leaves) and below ground (rhizomes and roots) each the station and the relationship between the density towards seagrass biomass. Data obtained using quadrat transect method at 18 points sampling. The results showed that the density of seagrass in the study sites was high, the density of seagrass in Station 2 was higher than Station 1. Reviewed by percentage of seagrass coverage status was classified as poor and the category of moderately with the higher percentage of seagrass coverage in Station 2 than Station 1. The largest value of biomass was found on rhizomes and roots of seagrass at both stations. The seagrass area less under the influence of anthropogenic and physical environment (Station 2) has the potential of biomass is greater than the seagrass area opposite condition (Station 1). Keywords: Global warming, Biomass, Seagrass, Trikora beach.
