Abstract

The inquiry learning model (IBL) has been explored in many fields of science. Therefore, this research shows the exploration of IBL assisted by Macromedia flash in improving cognitive science learning outcomes for elementary school students. This study aimed to determine the effect of Macromedia flash-assisted IBL on students' cognitive learning outcomes. This quasi-experimental research with a nonequivalent control group design used a sample of 66 students consisting of 33 students in the experimental group and 33 students in the control group. The data collection technique was carried out through tests, using test questions validated by experts and tested for feasibility. Hypothesis testing by the ANCOVA test analysis using the SPSS Statistics 23 program on the pretests obtained a sig value. (2-tailed) > which is 0.000 <0.05, then H0 is rejected, and Ha is accepted. It means that there is an influence of the learning model on cognitive learning outcomes. The results of the LSD test showed that the IBL model assisted by Macromedia flash was significantly different in cognitive learning outcomes compared to the conventional model. Thus, IBL Macromedia flash assistance can be recommended for improving students' cognitive learning outcomes.

Abstract

Students are agents of future leaders who need to be prepared from now on to think at a high level. Through PBL models with HPC strategies, elementary science learning can potentially train high-level thinking, including metacognitive awareness and critical thinking skills. This study aims to reveal the contribution of metacognitive awareness to critical thinking skills with PBL models and HPC strategies. Various studies report that PBL has shortcomings in fostering metacognition and critical thinking. Therefore, PBL needs to be implemented with the homogeneity psycho cognition (HPC) strategy so that students can rise in organizing metacognitive awareness and critical thinking. This correlational study examined the relationship between metacognitive awareness and students' critical thinking skills. The predictor and criterion variables in the study were metacognitive awareness and critical thinking skills, respectively. Data analysis was conducted with linear regression. The results showed a correlation between metacognitive awareness and critical thinking skills in learning with PBL. There is a moderate relationship between the two variables. The predictor variables contributed 28.4% to the criterion variable. This study recommends that PBL with HPC is very important to be familiarized with learning in elementary schools to encourage students' metacognition and critical thinking skills.

Abstract

Learning based on local wisdom needs to continue to be encouraged because it accommodates a contextual approach and preserves the cultural heritage of Indonesia, especially Maluku. The aim of this research is to develop local content learning tools with blended learning based on local wisdom to empower high school students' 21st century life skills. This research uses the Research and Development (R&D) model developed by Borg & Gall which consists of 10 stages. Sampling was carried out by random sampling, especially for schools that were declared participating after a placement test was carried out. The sample for the quasi experiment was class X high school students spread across 10 high schools, while the test subjects in the development stage used four high schools. Based on the results of research and valorization, it was found that the learning product had met product suitability standards, namely (Valid or can be used with minor revisions) through product validity testing by experts and field trials. The validation results are then revised until they meet the expected standards and then revalidation is carried out to ensure that the development product is valid and can be used for learning purposes, especially at the experimental research stage. The low percentage of research based on local wisdom with blended learning needs to be followed up by increasing this research with varied designs, measured variables, research subjects, and improving research locations. The implications of this research can contribute to improving the quality of more contextual learning, by integrating local cultural values in the teaching and learning process.

Abstract

One of the essential skills needed by prospective elementary education teachers is scientific communication. The issue raised is the low level of communication skills among students in the context of relevant biological issues, which can hinder their engagement in biology science discussions and evidence-based decision-making. This study aims to analyze the scientific communication skills of prospective science teachers in biological science concepts. The research adopts a descriptive approach in its methodology. The research process was conducted through direct observation of learning activities taking place in the classroom. The population in this study consists of students from the elementary teacher education program at a public university in Ambon City, with a sample size of 80 students. The results indicate that the implementation of the Two Stay, Two Stray (TSTS) approach significantly improves students' communication skills. The average communication skills score increased by 71.41%, falling into the good category. These findings suggest that this collaborative approach is effective in enhancing students' understanding of biological issues and their ability to communicate effectively. This study recommends the implementation of active learning methods such as TSTS in science education to facilitate the development of scientific literacy and students' communication skills.

Abstract

The critical thinking skills of elementary school students are still relatively low, even though these skills are essential for facing the demands of the 21st century and global challenges. The low level of critical thinking skills is a significant problem in the learning process, so an innovative approach is needed to address it. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) approach in improving the critical thinking skills of elementary school students. This study was conducted at an elementary school in Ambon City at the 6th grade level that has implemented STEAM learning, involving 20 students as samples. Qualitative methods and a phenomenological approach were chosen to explore the students' experiences, perceptions, and learning processes in depth. Fifteen essay questions based on Facione's (1990) indicators were used to measure students' critical thinking skills, along with semi-structured interviews and documentation of STEAM project results as evidence of implementation. Data analysis was carried out through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and verification to ensure the validity of the findings. The results showed that the STEAM approach significantly improved critical thinking skills in interpretation, analysis, explanation, inference, and evaluation. However, students still needed further assistance in independently managing the critical thinking process in self-regulation. In conclusion, STEAM-based learning has been proven effective in stimulating critical thinking skills through contextual and collaborative learning models relevant to real-life situations and encouraging student cooperation.

Abstract

The exponential increase in plastic production and the surge in plastic waste have led scientists and researchers to look for innovative and sustainable ways to recycle plastic waste to reduce its negative environmental impact. Project-Based Learning (PjBL) based on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) with ecobricks is one of the learning solutions for reducing plastic waste and increasing student motivation. This study aimed to determine the effect of the STEAM-based PjBL model with ecobricks techniques that can improve student learning motivation on ecology. This type of research is pre-experimental One-Group Pretest-Posttest Design. The sample in this study was 25 respondents. The sampling technique used by researchers was purposive sampling. The results of the study showed that based on the pretest in this study 55.28 after treatment was given to 25 respondents, the posttest results were 74.96. Other findings also showed a difference in the average value between the pretest and posttest. The sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.001 <0.05 then H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted, meaning that the steam-based project-based learning model is effective in increasing student learning motivation. Thus, STEAM-based PjBL with ecobricks techniques can improve the learning motivation of elementary school students.         Keywords: PjBL, STEAM, ecobricks, learning motivation.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpmipa/v25i2.pp512-529
