ABSTRAKMembaca adalah salah satu ketrampilan bahasa yang perlu di kembangkan oleh berbagaiÂ Â Â Â Â Â Â jenjang pendidikan, karena membaca adalah salah satu hal penting di antara berbicara, mendengar dan menulis. Dengan membaca kita lebih banyak mengetahui hal-hal yang dulunya tidak kita ketahui menggunakan bahasa inggris. Dari teks yang di baca tersebut kita dapat memperoleh informasi yang berhubungan dengan hal-hal yang kita senangi. Minat yang timbul itu merupakan doromgan yang membuat kita meras tertarik untuk membaca dan memahami apa yang disampaikan oleh penulis melalui tulisan nya. Makalah ini bertujuan untuk membantu mengatasi salah satu dari sekian banyak permasalahan yang ada dalam pengajaran membaca (reading) pada sekolah menengah pertama (SMP). Selain itu makalah ini juga dimaksudkan sebagai masukan bagi guru-guru bahasa inggris dalam melaksanakan pelajaran sehingga siswa tertarik dan termotivasi untuk belajar membaca khususnya dalam pemahaman narrative text. Untuk proses belajar mrngajar Bahasa Inggris, diperlukan adanya suatu strategi pembelajaran yang tepat dan efektif, yang bisa membantu siswa untuk meningkatkan kemampuan mereka didalam belajar Bahasa Inggris. Anticipation guide and pyramid diagram strategy adalah sebagai salah satu dari strategy dalam pengajaran membaca di kelas, yang dapat membantu siswa menjadi lebih aktif untuk mengidentifikasi konsep dan pernyataan yang berhubungan dengan teks, dan siswa dapat memahami teks dengan mudah. Tujuan dari pengabungan dua strategi ini agar siswa termotivasi untuk membaca dan siswa menjadi lebih aktif dan kreatif dalam belajar bahasa inggris khususnya membaca.

ABSTRAKÂ Materi merupakan satu dari komponen pembelajaran yang menempati posisi yang paling utama, karna tanpaÂ Â materiÂ Â aktifitasÂ Â pembelajaran Â tidakÂ Â akanÂ Â bisaÂ Â dilaksanakan. Â Dalam Â pemilihan Â materi pembelajaran ada beberapa prinsip yang harusÂ Â diikuti olehÂ Â guru seperti relevansi, konsistensi dan sufisiensi. Kategori prinsip ini hendaknya terdapat dalam materi pembelajaran,. Skripsi ini ditulis bertujuan untuk menganalisa materi yang dipilih oleh guru khususnya materi reading. Selain itu skripsi ini juga dimaksudkan sebagai masukan bagi guru-guru, dosen dan juga mahasiswa pendidikan Bahasa Inggris dalam pemilihan materi pelajaran khususnya pada materi reading.Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian dalam bentuk deskriptif kualitatif.. Dalam penelitian ini peneliti memilih materi kelas X (Sepuluh) yaitu tentang deskriptif teks, recount teks dan naratif teks. Â Berdasarkan data yang didapat selama penelitian, peneliti menyimpulkan materi deskriptif dan recount yang relevansi , konsistensi dan safisiensi dengan kharateristik reading material. sedangkan untuk teks naratif belum sesuai dengan ketiga poin relevansi, konsistensi dan safisiensi dari reading material.Â Â

The aim of this research is to describe the effect of environment toward studentsâ learning style in studying English at Kecamatan Koto XI Tarusan, Pesisir Selatan. English is an important subject for students since it has many tourism destinations. So, the students should have a capability in English in order to promote their areas. In learning English, each student has different way or different learning style. One of the factors that influences their learning style is an environment. The method of this reseach is causal-comparative. The sample used purposive sampling. The researcher chose 4 schools located in different environment; they are Junior High School number 9Â located close to beach, Junior high SchoolÂ number 1Â located close to market, Senior High School number 2Â located in hilly environment, and Senior High School number 1 located between hill and beach. The total of sample is 216 students and 216 studentsâ parents. The data were taken by using observation, questioneer and interview. The result of this research is the environment does not affect the students learning style in studying English since most of the students in 3 areas use common sense.

Dalam proses belajar dana mengajar bahasa inggris, menganalisa apa yang dibutuhkan siswa dalam belajar merupakan langkah awal sebelum proses tersebut dimulai. Berdasarkan apa yang siswa butuhkan, seorang guru harus mendisain materi ajar, media, teknik pengajaran, bentuk evaluasi yang akan dilakukan supaya apa yang menjadi target akan tercapai. Khusus disekolah kejuruan, bahasa inggris yang dibutuhkan harus sesuai dengan jurusannya masing-masing. Pariwisata merupakan salah satu yang membutuhkan bahasa inggris yang berhubungan dengan dengan dunia parawisata itu sendiri. Namun, terkadang bahsa inggris yang mereka dapatkan sama dengan bahasa inggris disekolah lain yang tidak membutuhkan English for Spesific Purpose. Pada tulisan ini, peneliti menganalisa kebutuhan siswa terhadap bahasa inggris. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan malalui angket dan wawancara. Maka didapatlah bahwa siswa dijurusan parawisata membutuhkan pembelajaran kosa kata bahsa inggris yang banyak yang bisa langsung diaplikasikan pada dunia kerja nantinya

Communication problems may occur in EIL contexts when English language users from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds conveying their messages. Being intelligible should not be seen as simple as pronunciation problems but it has other essential issues beyond it. To overcome such problem, there is a need for the English language learners to be aware of the intelligibility issues. This paper discusses the importance of introducing the intelligibility issues in EIL contexts for English language learners at secondary education in order to prepare them to communicate effectively with the diverse English language users around the world. The analytical scheme developed by Hu and McKay (2014) which defines the dimension of integrating multilingual and multicultural practices is adopted to select the YouTube video clips for the teaching materials. This practical guidance for introducing the intelligibility issues to the secondary school students could be employed by the English teachers to raise their students’ awareness toward the construct of intelligibility in EIL contexts.

Peer feedback on oral presentation is still an unexplored area. Much research has been conducted on peer feedback in various teaching and learning contexts, only a few about how peer gives feedback on his/her partner’ oral presentations. The study described here focuses using peer feedback on oral presentations. Analyzing data from semi-structured interviews, this case study investigated impact of giving peer feedback on oral presentations used by English as Foreign Language (EFL) college students on other student’s oral presentation tasks. Data analysis revealed that the peer gave oral feedback mainly focused on content-related criteria (quality of introduction, structure, and conclusion). Most of the peers focused on the nature of the delivery (eye-contact, vocal delivery, enthusiasm, interaction with the audience and body-language), and a few focused on a general quality and on the design of the students’ PowerPoint (PPT) slides.

JIGSAW: Helping Students to Comprehend Linguistics Material in Introduction to Linguistics Class at English Department of STKIP PGRI West Sumatra Perpisa, Lili

This study aims to improve students' understanding of linguistics by using a jigsaw strategy. It is constituted as a linguistic study about language in overall. Language is a communication tool for a person which has several systems. Thus, the language itself is important to be learned and understood, especially for the students of the language. Another reason is the existence of several phenomena that researchers have encountered in the classroom in English language courses of STKIP PGRI SUMBAR. The study of language that is learned is English or English linguistic. First, English is a foreign language which is not easy to be learned. The second, the material on this language is a complete knowledge that cannot be separated from one another. Meanwhile, the time provided only 2.5 hours per week. Students are expected to understand the concept of language, how to communicate, sounds, words, meanings and applications. Third problem is learning strategies used by lecturers. Lecturer asks students to learn in groups. Each group will present a different material each week. Then the others respond, causing discussion. This strategy is less effective against the student's understanding. Discussion only occurs for students who had studied. Most of them are just silent. Likewise, group presentations, it will dominate only one or two students. The others are just as followers. So in this study the researcher wants to apply the jigsaw to solve the above problems.Type of research is a Classroom Action Research. It would increase the students' understandings of linguistic of STKIP PGRI SUMBAR. Participants that would be used were the student of English at STKIP PGRI SUMBAR who were taking the course Introduction to Linguistics. The data were collected through observation would also be assisted by collaborator. The instruments to be used are notes, interviews, and tests. The data is analysed by classifying based on the characteristics. Then, the data would be interpreted to see whether the jigsaw can increase students' understanding of linguistics or not.

This present paper reports finding from a study dealt with the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students’ metacognitive reading strategies. A total of 68 students were selected enrolled in English department of private university in West Sumatra and they were asked to complete a survey. However, after analysing the data, only the data from 38 students as participants could be included in the report. In this quantitative survey, the instrument used to gather data was based on a Survey of Reading Strategies (SORS). The study’s findings revealed that the Global Reading Strategies was the most frequently used, followed by the Support Reading Strategies and the Problem-Solving Strategies. Furthermore, implications of the finding are discussed in relation to reading comprehension of foreign language teaching and learning.

Language serves as a tool for communication. For beginners to understand English, utilizing various media is essential. The movie "Life of Pi" is analyzed to highlight the importance of educational values in our lives. This research addresses two main questions: What educational values are present in the "Life of Pi" movie, and what benefits does watching the movie offer? The research methodology used is descriptive qualitative. The study examines the educational values in the "Life of Pi" movie by collecting data through written and oral words, using observation and documentation techniques. The findings reveal several educational values in the "Life of Pi" movie: perseverance (20%), gratitude (15%), spirituality (15%), peace (15%), loyalty (10%), diligence (10%), selflessness (5%), purity (5%), and respect (5%). Additionally, there are three key benefits of watching "Life of Pi": it serves as an educational medium, an entertainment medium, and a source of inspiration

Gaya Bahasa adalah Bahasa yang menggunakan berbagai macam kiasan. Peneliti ini mendiskusikan tentang analisis gaya Bahasa dalam lagu ‘’If I were a Boy’’ dan ‘’Firework’’ sebagai bahan ajar untuk Sekolah Menengah Atas. tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menentukan makna tersirat dan tipe gaya Bahasa yang digunakan dalam lagu Beyonce dan Katy Perry. Sumber data diperoleh dari lirik lagu Beyonce dan Katy Perry. Desain penelitian yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah kualitatif dengan dokumen atau analisis isi sebagai tipe penelitiannya skripsi ini mendeskripsikan tipe dari gaya Bahasa yang ditemukan dari lagu Beyonce dan Katy Perry. Dari analisis, ada 7 tipe dari gaya Bahasa yaitu: Persamaan, Personifikasi, Hiperbola, Metafora, Imajinasi, Paronomasia, dan Penggulangan. Ada juga beberapa teori yang berhubungan dengan gaya Bahasa yang digunakan untuk mendukung analisis, dari data penelitian ditemukan bahwa, ada 2 Metafora, 2 Imajinasi, 6 Hiperbola, 5 Persamaan, 4 Penggulangan, 1 Paronomasia, dan 1 personifikasi. Kemudian gaya bahasa tersebut diklasifikasi dan dianalisis. Penelitian ini sangat diharapkan dapat memberikan kontribusi untuk pembaca berbahasa inggris mengetahui gaya Bahasa dengan jelas. Ini dapat membantu pembaca berbahasa inggris mengetahui makna tersirat dalam Bahasa Inggris. Dan ini juga diharapkan dapat memperkaya kosakata Bahasa inggris baru untuk digunakan dalam percakapan sehari-hari.
