Abstract

There were four major problems related to writing instruction at English Education Study Program of Palangka Raya University, Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. The problems were related to limited sources of printed materials, mostly teacher-centered activities, readers of students’ writings, and feedbacks for students’ writings. The utilization of blogs was performed to solve the problems. Blog was used as media in this research because it is a potential source for language learning, student fit, authentic for learning, and practical to apply. The research design was Classroom Action Research (CAR). There were 2 cycles implemented during this research. In the first cycle, the students’ writing improvement did not show significant progress and the criterion of success was not achieved. After the plan was revised on the basis of the findings during the implementation of first cycle, 80% students showed great improvements. Therefore, the criterion of success was achieved.

This research aims at finding out EFL students’ perceptions on the implementation of Flipped Learning in writing class. Survey research was applied with one-shot design and questionnaire was used to collect data. The setting of this research is at one university in Central Kalimantan Province in Indonesia where English is a foreign language. The students were in their fourth semester learning writing skill. In order to avoid teacher-centered learning which may cause a boring and monotonous classroom, this research implemented Flipped Learning that could change the way students learn. The approach was done during one semester and the questionnaires were then handed out at the end of the semester. After the questionnaires were collected and analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively, the result of this research shows that students had positive perceptions on the implementation of Flipped Learning in Writing 3 class.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to illustrate the attitudes and awareness of secondary school students in Central Kalimantan towards environmental issues and to propose a framework to raise or improve those attitudes and awareness. The environmental issues covered in this paper are related to forest, bush, and peat land fires. The paper elaborates the secondary school students’ attitudes and awareness obtained from questionnaires which were distributed to 12 Regencies and 1 City in Central Kalimantan. The findings in this paper show that most of the samples of secondary school students have insufficient knowledge about environmental issues and how to overcome the problems. Most of them did not take any action to prevent environmental destruction though they have expectation that their surroundings will be better in the future. Based on the findings, there are practical implications in attempts to minimize the problems which are happening annually in relation to the environment, particularly, peat land fires. There should be learning materials at school that can add to the knowledge of the students towards environment conservation. Schools have a major role to play because students are bound to follow formal education thus it fills the gap between students’ knowledge and environmental problems. Keywords: attitude, awareness, environmental issues, English learning materials

Abstract

Data-driven Learning (DDL) has been widely used in language classrooms and suggested to promote learner autonomy and retention. The current study would confirm if the findings of research in other countries are also found in Indonesian context within different time span. Therefore, this study investigates Indonesian EFL students’ long-term practice of DDL after one semester has passed since they learned with DDL using corpus data. The participants of this study were university students specializing in English Language Education and the setting of this study was at one public university in Central Kalimantan Province of Indonesia where English is a foreign language. Survey research with one-shot design was conducted and questionnaire comprising of three dimensions (learners’ retention of learning materials and current knowledge of DDL, current practice of DDL, and future plan) was distributed to collect data. The results show positive trends that the students had retention of the learning materials they learned in the previous semester through DDL, they currently employed DDL independently outside classrooms, and they would apply DDL in the future.

Abstract

Previous studies have investigated the community's perspectives on local languages’ existence due to exposures to various languages in residential areas or through formal education in secondary schools. However, there is a lack of evidence on the research of university students’ perspectives on local languages’ existence because they are exposed to international languages as a result of learning and the vast development of technology. Therefore, the current study investigates English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students' beliefs on local languages' existence in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. In order to measure intangibles, survey research with a one-shot design was conducted following the techniques of planning, defining the population, sampling, constructing the instrument, conducting the survey, and processing the data. The participants of this study were university students majoring in English Language Education and the setting of this study was at one public university in Central Kalimantan Province of Indonesia. A questionnaire in the open- and close-ended questions was distributed to collect data. The current study results confirm that the majority of the participants were active users of local languages and were exposed to international languages (English, Korean, Japanese) through education and entertainment. The participants positively viewed the local languages' existence amidst the exposure of international languages because the local languages were still used in daily life and parts of culture that had been inherited for generations. Furthermore, the participants had taken action to preserve their local languages by continuously using local languages in their family and friendship domains both in the real world and through social media.
