Abstract

This study examines the effect of using the Odd One Out game to improve students’ knowledge of clothing-related English vocabulary. The research includes introducing the Odd One Out game to students, explaining its concepts, planning and designing lessons using this game, evaluating and measuring learning outcomes. The study was conducted at SDN 6 Menteng, Central Kalimantan, involving 26 fifth-grade students from class 5B. This game incorporates in-depth material exploration, development of learning activities, and group discussions in the classroom. Implementing the Odd One Out game has demonstrated that students in the school significantly improved their knowledge of clothing-related English vocabulary. The learning process also fostered a competitive and engaging classroom environment. The implementation of the learning process through the Odd One Out game was conducted successfully and efficiently. Game-based learning methods can serve as an effective solution to address the low interest of elementary school students in learning English vocabulary.

Abstract

Improving the quality of human resources in rural areas is a significant challenge in achieving equal education in Indonesia, particularly in areas such as Tumbang Nusa Village, Jabiren Raya District, Pulang Pisau Regency, Central Kalimantan. Low awareness of the importance of education and limited access to English language learning are factors that hinder the development of the younger generation's potential. This community service activity aims to increase the awareness and basic English language skills through a participatory and contextual approach based on the school community. The implementation method includes interactive training, song-based and visual learning, and joint reflection, face-to-face at partner schools. The results of the activity demonstrated high enthusiasm among participants, active engagement in the learning process, and increased motivation to learn English. This activity also strengthened collaboration between the community service team, the village, and the school as local partners. This activity suggests that the contextual and communicative approach is effective in developing learning awareness and language skills among students living in rural areas.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the learning experience and English exposure level of English Language Education students at Palangka Raya University. The study used mixed methods with data collection through closed-ended questionnaires and open-ended questions, which were analyzed descriptively quantitatively and qualitatively. The results show that most students have a fairly positive learning experience, especially in terms of motivation and engagement. However, the active use of English is still inconsistent. Informal exposure to English through digital media appears to be more dominant, with a higher tendency of utilizing entertainment content than educational content. Meanwhile, the use of English in formal contexts and social environments is still relatively limited. These findings emphasize the importance of learning strategies that are able to combine formal, informal, and self-learning approaches in a balanced manner to support students' overall mastery of English.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the relevance and pedagogical implications of Suryawinata and Hariyanto’s translation theory in Indonesian senior high school contexts. Translation is recognized not only as a linguistic skill but also as a tool to develop students’ cultural understanding and critical thinking in English language education. Employing a qualitative descriptive design in the form of a literature review, the study analyzed 46 sources, including books, journal articles, and conference proceedings, published between 2009 and 2025 in both Indonesian and English. These sources were selected based on their relevance to translation pedagogy, strategies, and classroom practices. The findings indicate that the structured stages of the Suryawinata and Hariyanto model (analysis, transfer, restructuring, and evaluation) align well with the needs of Indonesian high school students and can support curriculum goals by promoting linguistic accuracy and cultural sensitivity. Despite challenges such as limited class time, varying student proficiency levels, and lack of specialized teaching materials, the model offers opportunities for integration into project-based learning, formative assessment, and cross-curricular instruction. The novelty of this study lies in its systematic synthesis of translation theory and its practical connection to secondary education, an area that has been underexplored in previous research. This review provides a foundation for future instructional innovation and material development, particularly for teachers, curriculum designers, and educational researchers seeking to enhance English language learning through translation.

Abstract

The prevalence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in this modern era has been one of the major interests in translation studies. The ability of AI to produce human-like translations has become an ongoing discussion among scholars. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the utility of AI in providing alternatives for journalistic text translation results made by English Department students of Universitas Palangka Raya during a Translation Course. Given the communicative nature of journalistic texts, this study explores how culturally distinctive features, such as idioms, collocations, traditional language nuances, and organization names, are translated from Indonesian into English. By referring to translation strategies adapted from Newmark (1988), Hoed (2006), and Baker (2011), translation results made by students are compared with those generated by AI technology, i.e. DeepL and ChatGPT. Since creativity is one of the key characteristics of human translation, this study examines whether AI systems can be reliable tools for demonstrating the same creativity level. Translation creativity in this study refers to the ability to select the most effective strategies and wording to produce better translation versions of those culturally distinctive features. This study is expected to shed light on the evolving role of AI in the field of translation.

Vocational High School (SMK) is one of the most popular choices for students in Indonesia due to its focus on work preparation for students. Therefore, students need to be equipped with knowledge and abilities that are relevant to their department. To fulfill this, all subjects, including English, are designed to support their knowledge in their future field of work. Abstract

This study aims to find the effect of ‘Slap the Board’ game on students' English vocabulary retention at SDN 3 Menteng Palangka Raya, Indonesia. This research used quantitative approach with pre-experiment research type and One-Group Pre-test-Post-test Design. The research was conducted in an elementary school with a total sampling of 16 third-grade students, consisting of 5 male students and 11 female students. The data were collected using a multiple-choice test instrument with 20 questions, given in the pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed using inferential statistics through Shapiro-Wilk normality test and paired sample t-test. The results showed that students' English vocabulary mastery had an average of 57.5 in the pre-test, and after the implementation of the “Slap the Board” game, students' vocabulary retention increased with an average of 75 in the post-test. Statistical analysis showed that the “Slap the Board” game had a significant effect on students' English vocabulary mastery with a sig. (2-tailed) 0.001, which is smaller than the significance level α = 0.05. Thus, H₀ is rejected and H₁ is accepted. So, the “Slap the Board” game which involves kinesthetic activities and competition can improve the ability to retain English vocabulary and create a more fun and interactive learning atmosphere.
