Abstract

Teachers’ anxiety and self-efficacy in four English skills take an important role in succeeding the classroom learning activities. Thus, this study aimed to examine the effect of teachers’ anxiety and self-efficacy on their English skills mastery. The teachers’ English skills mastery was based on their TOEIC Scores. There were 65 teachers at one of the state polytechnics who participated voluntarily in the study. Data were obtained using Foreign Language Anxiety Scale (FLAS) and Foreign Language Self-Efficacy Scale (FLSS). Lecturers’ TOEIC scores were categorized into six levels namely novice, elementary, intermediate, basic working proficiency, advanced working proficiency, and general professional proficiency. The obtained data were analyzed using the descriptive-quantitative technique. The results showed that there was no notable effect of teachers’ anxiety in English on their English skills mastery. Another finding revealed a significant effect of teachers’ self-efficacy in mastering English on their English skills mastery. These results are expected to be a reliable source of rationales that initiating a development program of teachers’ self-efficacy in mastering English could enhance their English skills mastery.

Abstract

An e-module aviation speaking preparation test has been developed to support cadets of aviation vocational schools in preparing English language proficiency tests. This research aimed to assess whether there was an improvement in cadets’ aviation speaking preparation test scores after studying the E-Module. A sample of 120 cadets participated in the study to examine the effect of E-Module aviation speaking preparation test to enhance aviation speaking abilities. The validation test score of 89.5% indicates that the E-Module aviation speaking preparation test is very valid for usage. Independent sample T-test results revealed differences between pretest and posttest scores of the e-module aviation speaking preparation test for cadets at both aviation polytechnics. Paired T-test results indicated that cadets who utilized the E-Module achieved higher learning with a significance value of (0.000)<α (0.05). The correlation between pretest and posttest scores and the learning outcomes of the E-Module aviation speaking preparation test showed a relatively high level of correlation, with a coefficient of 0.480 and a significance value of Sig (2-tailed=0.000)<½ α (0.025). These findings suggest that the E-Module aviation speaking preparation test effectively enhances the aviation English speaking abilities of cadets.

Abstract

The practice of intercultural teaching seems to be commonly applied but not in aviation English class. This might be difficult in conceptualizing intercultural competence instructional model (ICCIM) due to the mandatory adaptation to aviation English materials. This autobiographical study aimed to describe how the researcher conducted intercultural competence (ICC) teaching in aviation English class along with the depiction of students’ reflective constructs. This study was undertaken in Politeknik Penerbangan Surabaya as one of state aviation schools under agency of human resource development on transportation. The researcher found that the ICCIM could be implemented in aviation English class with some challenges. Another finding showed that the students were interested in learning ICC materials. This autobiographical study implies that there needs further research in examining ICCIM in aviation English class with wider cultural exposures and practices to give aviation students wider cultural perspectives before they work in the field of aviation.

Abstract

The efficacy of self-regulated learning in the context of language acquisition has been widely acknowledged. This study demonstrates the impact of self-regulated learning on the enhancement of students' speaking abilities. Within the context of English as a Foreign Language (EFL), the act of speaking is commonly regarded as a formidable undertaking that necessitates the utilization of various actions, skills, and strategies to attain effective communication. Digital portfolios have a significant impact on language learning as they encompass learners' actions, skills, and strategies in classroom planning. This research investigated the influence of self-regulation processes on students' performance in speaking tasks in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classes at Politeknik Penerbangan Jayapura. The primary outcomes that were observed encompassed the phases of anticipation, realization, and reflection in speaking tasks. The findings of the study indicate that individuals who possess self-regulatory skills can effectively communicate when they possess a comprehensive understanding of the task at hand and can regulate their actions accordingly.

Abstract

This research highlights the significance of collaborative teaching in addressing the diverse learning challenges faced by cadets, as statistical analysis indicates that team teaching strategies can significantly enhance English learning outcomes compared to traditional methods, thus supporting the educational rights of all students. The research aims to investigate the differences in academic performance between students taught using team-teaching strategies and traditional teaching methods in vocational aviation schools, employing a quantitative ex post facto comparative analysis to measure the impact of these teaching strategies on English learning outcomes, supported by statistical data from Polytechnic Penerbangan Surabaya and Polytechnic Penerbangan Medan. Our findings indicate a statistically significant difference in academic performance, with team teaching students achieving higher average scores (M = 85.4, SD = 3.2) compared to traditional teaching students (M = 78.6, SD = 4.1), p < 0.05. The collaborative nature of team teaching promotes professional development among educators, leading to improved instructional strategies and teaching quality. Educators are encouraged to adopt team teaching strategies to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes, as evidence demonstrates their effectiveness in fostering a more inclusive and supportive educational environment.
