Abstract

Aviation English proficiency is pivotal for aviation school students to ensure secure communication in global airspace per ICAO guidelines. Conventional methods are rigid, leading to inaccurate and time-consuming evaluations that hinder training efficacy. This research develops a web-based adaptive Aviation English proficiency test integrating adaptive algorithms like Item Response Theory and dynamic assessment to enhance aviation education outcomes. Using a mixed-methods framework with the ADDIE model and quantitative experimental approach, an explanatory sequential design with non-equivalent control group was employed, involving needs assessment, prototype development, validation, and implementation. The sample included 141 aviation school students. Data from pre/post-tests were analyzed via SPSS. The findings showed that i) the web-based test is valid and feasible as an assessment tool with a validation score of 89.5%; ii) student proficiency levels are significantly improved before and after using the adaptive system (paired t-test: mean rise from 72.6 to 91.4, t=-14.28, p=0.000 <0.05); iii) dynamic assessment positively impacts learning outcomes following implementation (32% uplift, ?=0.61, p<0.01); and iv) there is a significant difference between experimental and control groups in evaluation efficiency (independent t-test: 25% higher for experimental, t=10.52, p=0.000 <0.05). These affirm the test's efficacy, recommending broader adoption for refined aviation training.

Abstract

Program studi Diploma 3 Komunikasi Penerbangan (Prodi D3 KP) selama ini telah memiliki page pada laman website resmi Politeknik Penerbangan Surabaya (Polekbang Surabaya) yaitu  https://poltekbangsby.ac.id/program-studi/komunikasi-penerbangan/. Namun seiring dengan meningkatnya kebutuhan informasi dan data di Program studi Diploma 3 Komunikasi Penerbangan, pada penelitian ini dibangun dan dikembangkan Sistem informasi Program studi Diploma 3 Komunikasi Penerbangan berbasis website. Pada penelitian ini, proses bisnis sistem digambarkan dengan BPMN (Business Process Model and Notation). Sistem ini dibangun menggunakan CMS (Content Manajemen System) yang bersifat open source yaitu wordpress. Setelah sistem ini berjalan, dilakukan evaluasi terhadap kinerja sistem dengan menggunakan kerangka kerja PIECES

Abstract

Globalization increasingly demands graduates who are able to communicate across cultures confidently and appropriately. However, limited evidence explains how culturally diverse students in semi-military vocational settings experience intercultural learning, particularly when language barriers and differing expectations shape their academic and social adjustment. This study explores the motivations, perceived benefits, challenges, and intercultural learning experiences of foreign students enrolled at Surabaya Aviation Polytechnic. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected from 18 Timor-Leste students through semi-structured interviews and open-ended questionnaires, and analyzed using deductive–inductive thematic analysis with data triangulation. The conceptual frameworks of intercultural communicative competence (ICC), cultural intelligence (CQ), and self-efficacy in English use informed the construction of interview guides and the interpretation of findings. Results reveal six key motivations for studying abroad, mainly career advancement, institutional reputation, and program practicality. Nevertheless, students experienced a clear gap between expectations and reality. Limited interaction with local peers, regional language accents, and low confidence in using English led to reduced frequency of intercultural encounters, social withdrawal, and stagnation in ICC development. Personal factors such as introversion and language anxiety further constrained participation. The findings suggest that authentic intercultural exposure, confidence-building strategies, and structured cultural preparation are essential to support students’ integration and learning. Practically, institutions should provide mentoring, communication simulations, and media-based cultural orientation to improve students’ readiness, emotional regulation, and self-efficacy. The study contributes to the literature by highlighting how intercultural learning unfolds in a unique vocational aviation context and by proposing practical approaches to enhance students’ intercultural development.

Abstract

Aviation vocational education requires competency-based digital learning media that enable cadets to practice workplace communication tasks aligned with industry standards. This study developed and evaluated a web-based Electronic ICAO English Language Proficiency (E-IELP) platform to support aviation communication training for aeronautical communication cadets at an aviation vocational polytechnic in Indonesia. The platform provides ICAO-aligned learning activities, including radiotelephony read-back, situation analysis, emergency communication scenarios, and speaking tasks. This study employed a research and development (R&D) approach based on the ADDIE model, followed by a quasi-experimental pre-test–post-test control-group design to evaluate the platform's effectiveness. Forty-eight cadets participated in the study and were assigned to treatment and control groups. Data were collected through needs analysis questionnaires, curriculum analysis, expert validation forms, user response questionnaires, performance tests, and interviews. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, paired-samples t-tests, Welch's independent-samples t-test, and effect size estimates, while qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The platform was judged feasible by experts and received highly positive responses from users. The treatment group achieved significantly higher post-test performance than the control group, indicating that the platform effectively supports structured, repeated, and feedback-oriented aviation communication practice. However, because the study was conducted at a single institution over a four-week intervention and involved a relatively small sample using a five-point performance scale, the very large effect size should be interpreted with caution. Overall, the findings suggest that the E-IELP platform can serve as an effective supplementary competency-based digital learning platform for aviation vocational education.

Abstract

Aircraft maintenance personnel work with technical documentation and colleagues across multilingual and multicultural settings, yet Aviation English instruction often gives limited attention to intercultural communicative competence (ICC). This classroom action research examined how an ICC-based Aviation English model was implemented and refined, how students responded to it, and whether and how students' perceived ICC changed. Participants were 24 Diploma 3 Aircraft Engineering students and two Aviation English lecturers at an Indonesian civil aviation polytechnic. Two cycles followed planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. Evidence comprised observation checklists and field notes, a 15-item student-response questionnaire, lecturer reflection, learning documentation, and a 20-item self-report Assessment of Intercultural Competence. Cycle 1 showed procedural enactment but insufficient clarity, scaffolding, and support. Cycle 2 bundled the CLIMB sequence with lecturer mentoring and authentic interaction with Timor-Leste students. Student-response medians increased across all five instructional components (all p < .001; r = .75-.88). Perceived ICC also increased across knowledge, attitude, skills, and awareness (all p < .001; r = .86-.88), with larger paired median gains in skills and knowledge. The findings support the feasibility of structured intercultural pedagogy in Aviation English, while the single-group design and bundled Cycle 2 changes preclude attributing improvement to CLIMB alone.

Abstract

This study applies a self-presentational framework to explore foreign language listening anxiety among 100 cadets at Politeknik Penerbangan Surabaya learning Aviation English, addressing how comprehension uncertainty fosters vulnerability in high-stakes aural interactions. The explanatory sequential mixed-methods design combined the Shortened Scale of Foreign Language Listening Anxiety (SSFLLA), Revised Interaction Anxiousness Scale (RIAS), Revised Penn State Worry Questionnaire (RPSWQ), and an aviation-themed dictation test with verbal reports from 17 cadets. Quantitative results showed moderate listening anxiety (SSFLLA M = 3.503, SD = 0.804). Overall listening anxiety was inversely associated with dictation proficiency (r = -.451, p < .001). Self-focused apprehension (M = 3.704, SD = 0.897) was positively associated with social anxiousness (r = .253, p = .011), whereas task-focused apprehension (M = 3.302, SD = 0.703) was inversely associated with dictation proficiency (r = -.402, p < .001). Program differences were observed for self-focused anxiety, F(2, 97) = 4.56, p = .013, ηp² = .09. In the adjusted self-focused model, general worry showed the largest partial effect, F(1, 93) = 58.54, p < .001, ηp² = .39. Qualitative findings highlighted social-evaluative exposure, cognitive overwhelm, and pathways to resilience. The findings support targeted proficiency-building, clarification practice, and psychologically supportive scenario-based training in Aviation English.

Abstract

This study investigated the effects of a 12-week explicit metacognitive listening intervention on self-regulated learning (SRL), foreign language enjoyment (FLE), and radiotelephony listening performance among 100 second-year aviation cadets at Surabaya Aviation Polytechnic, Indonesia. Using a one-group pre-test/post-test quasi-experimental design, the intervention was fully integrated into the regular Aviation English curriculum and employed authentic radiotelephony materials (LiveATC.net recordings and Mayday simulations) following Vandergrift and Goh’s (2021) pedagogical cycle. Data were collected before and after the intervention via the Metacognitive Awareness Listening Questionnaire (MALQ), Self-Regulated Online Learning Questionnaire–Short Form, a short-form FLE scale, and an ICAO-aligned 30-item listening test. Paired-samples t-tests revealed significant improvements (all ps < .001) with medium-to-large effects on SRL (d = 0.68), large effects on listening performance (d = 0.87), and very large effects on FLE (d = 1.84). The findings provide the first empirical evidence that process-oriented metacognitive instruction can simultaneously enhance cognitive, behavioral, and affective outcomes in safety-critical aviation English contexts and offer direct, low-cost support for ICAO’s latest training recommendations.

Abstract

Universities have a strategic role in efforts to spread science and technology in society. One thing that can be done in this effort is to carry out Community Service activities, which is one of the Tri Dharma tasks carried out by Higher Education. In order to implement the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, one of the Study Programs at the Surabaya Aviation Polytechnic, namely the D3 Aviation Communication Study Program, carried out a Community Service activity with the theme "Improving Communication Skills Using Project Based Learning Methods at SMK Nurul Hidayah Gresik on August 23 2023. Participants in this community service activity consisted of 58 students and 12 teachers. The aim of this community service activity is to find out that the communication skills of students who receive the Project Based Learning model are better than students who receive the conventional learning model. The research method used in this PKM activity is a qualitative descriptive research method with data collection techniques using documentation methods. Research through PKM activities through the training theme "Project Based Learning" received good responses and results for students at SMK Nurul Hidayah Gresik.

Abstract

This study used a narrative inquiry design to reveal the outstanding participants of a community service conducted to train aviation communication and safety at SMK Muhammadiyah 9 Lamongan. This study was intended to portray the impactful benefits and contributions in determining future implications for participants’ professional development. There were seven participants chosen using a purposive sampling technique by considering inclusion criteria such as being the most active participants in the program. Data were collected using interviews and the obtained qualitative data were analyzed using a thematic approach. Results showed that there were three key points of experiences perceived by the participants, namely the importance of effective aviation communication, awareness of aviation safety, and collaboration between school staffs and students. The benefits covered increasing understanding of the aviation industry, developing practical skills, increasing awareness of safety, and forming aviation people. The future implications involved implications on education and the world of aviation, and implications in the world of transportation in Indonesia. This study suggests that the community service program conducted brings more benefits for teachers, students, the headmaster, school staff, and the facilitator. Abstract

TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) digunakan sebagai alat penilaian standar untuk mengetahui ketrampilan Bahasa Inggris seseorang yang bukan penutur asli, utamanya bagi para calon karyawan/pegawai yang akan atau sedang bekerja di Perusahaan/instansi. Untuk itu diperlukan persiapan pelaksanaan test resmi berstandar international bagi 9 dosen Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Universitas Veteran Bangun Nusantara Sukoharjo untuk meningkatkan kompetensi bahasa Inggris di Univet secara global, memenuhi syarat kelulusan bagi calon wisudawan, serta meningkatkan daya saing lulusan di dunia kerja dan pendidikan. Tujuan dari kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini adalah untuk meningkatkan pemahaman dosen tentang penyelenggaraan TOEIC, mempersiapkan dosen sebagai pembimbing, mengembangkan materi pembelajaran berbasis TOEIC, meningkatkan kompetensi bahasa Inggris dosen, memperkuat jejaring dan kolaborasi, dan meningkatkan kemampuan mengajar TOEIC bagi dosen pendidikan bahasa Inggris. Berdasarkan hasil evaluasi pada kegiatan sharing session for the Toeic Tests ini, sebagian besar peserta memiliki pengetahuan dasar mengenai TOEIC, namun masih terdapat beberapa aspek yang perlu ditingkatkan, terutama terkait pemahaman instruksi, komponen tes, dan durasi waktu pengerjaan. Selain itu, sesi sharing session ini dinilai efektif dan menarik bagi peserta, dengan tingkat kepuasan dan ketertarikan yang sangat tinggi (100%). Dengan adanya hasil tersebut peserta pelatihan mengharapkan lebih banyak pelatihan yang diadakan untuk program pengabdian kepada masyarakat.
