Abstract

This study investigates students’ interest in learning English as a foreign language through traditional games in primary school. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the research focuses on student interest based on classroom observations and interviews, applying Schiefele’s (2009) indicators of student interest. The study population includes grades 2A, 2B, and 2C (87 students) at SDIT Permata Hati, Tebing Tinggi. A purposive sample of 29 students from grade 2B was selected. Data collection involved interviews and classroom observations. The findings indicate that a majority of students show high interest in learning English through traditional games. During game-based activities, 96% of students demonstrated positive emotional responses such as excitement and enthusiasm, reflecting key indicators of interest. These results suggest that traditional games can effectively enhance student motivation and engagement in English learning. The findings offer practical implications for English teachers in utilizing traditional games as instructional media. Moreover, the study recommends further research to explore the effectiveness of traditional games in secondary school contexts, particularly in enhancing interest and developing language skills such as listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of collaborative translation in enhancing student engagement and language development in translator education. The research addresses three questions: (1) how collaborative translation influences student engagement, (2) to what extent it improves language proficiency, and (3) what factors affect its effectiveness in classroom practice. Using a mixed-methods design, the study involved 20 sixth-semester students in an English Literature program at HKBP Nommensen University. Data were collected through classroom observations, a five-item Likert-scale questionnaire, semi-structured interviews, and pre- and post-tests assessing vocabulary, grammar, and translation accuracy. Quantitative data were analyzed descriptively using mean comparisons, while qualitative data were examined through thematic analysis and triangulation across data sources. Results showed consistent improvement in language performance, with mean scores increasing from 68 to 80 in vocabulary, 70 to 82 in grammar, and 65 to 78 in translation accuracy, indicating moderate learning gains. Questionnaire and interview findings revealed increased participation, shared responsibility, and greater confidence during collaborative tasks. The effectiveness of the project was influenced by group interaction, lecturer feedback, student motivation, and the use of digital resources. Participation was voluntary, and informed consent was obtained from all participants. The findings suggest that collaborative translation supports process-oriented and socially mediated translation learning.

Abstract

This research explores the profound significance of visual semiotics in contemporary horror cinema, where atmospheric construction has become a primary tool for evoking psychological terror. Despite the success of elevated horror, a literature gap remains regarding the granular semiotic analysis of how specific technical elements specifically color and lighting function as a sign system to maintain sustained dread. This study aims to identify the dominant semiotic elements of color and lighting in James Wan’s The Conjuring (2013) and analyze their effects in creating a harrowing atmosphere. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive design with a semiotic approach, the study examines 20 purposively selected scenes through Roland Barthes’ three orders of signification: denotation, connotation, and myth. Key findings reveal that the dominant semiotic markers include a desaturated color palette dominated by dark brown, greenish-grey, and black and low-key lighting techniques such as chiaroscuro and backlighting. Denotatively, these elements signify historical periodization and low visibility; connotatively, they signify spiritual corruption, isolation, and vulnerability. Furthermore, the research identifies that these visual signs coalesce into a cinematic "myth" of the domestic space as a predatory organism. The study concludes that the film’s efficacy in inducing dread is a deliberate semiotic construction; the empirical data shows that 'visual uncertainty' produced by the strategic obscuring of shadows through chiaroscuro and negative space compels the audience to project internal fears into the frame's unlit areas. These findings imply that in atmospheric horror, the manipulation of the viewer's perception through chromatic and luminant signs is more critical for emotional impact than explicit narrative or physical violence.

Abstract

Translation plays an important role in English language learning, particularly at the high school level in Indonesia, where students are often tasked with translating descriptive and narrative texts. The purpose of this study is to analyze students' perspectives in translating descriptive and narrative texts from English to Indonesian at SMAN 1 Gebang. The research method used in this study is qualitative by using a questionnaire as a data collection tool to see students' perspectives in translating descriptive and narrative texts using a Likert scale to measure students' perspectives in translating. The location of the study was conducted at SMAN 1 Gebang using a sample of 20 students selected through random sampling. The findings showed that 50% of students often had difficulty in understanding vocabulary, maintaining the original meaning of the text, and reformulating sentences in Indonesian. Some 40% of students relied heavily on context and tools such as dictionaries or online translators due to lack of mastery of vocabulary and understanding of translation strategies. In addition, 40% of students experienced cultural and linguistic differences between English and Indonesian identified as the main factors affecting translation results.

Abstract

This study examines the use of metaphor in Kunto Aji’s album Mantra Mantra as a form of figurative language that conveys complex emotional and psychological meanings. The research is grounded in Conceptual Metaphor Theory proposed by George Lakoff and Mark Johnson, which views metaphor not only as a linguistic device but also as a cognitive tool for understanding abstract experiences. The objectives of this study are to identify the types of metaphors used in the song lyrics and to interpret their meanings within the context of the album. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method, with song lyrics from nine selected songs in the Mantra Mantra album as the primary data. The data were collected through close reading and analyzed using textual analysis. The metaphors were classified into three types: structural, orientational, and ontological metaphors, followed by interpretation based on their contextual meanings. The findings reveal that all three types of metaphors are present in the lyrics, with ontological metaphors appearing most frequently. These metaphors conceptualize abstract experiences such as anxiety, love, memory, identity, and self-healing through concrete domains like physical objects, movement, space, and human actions. Furthermore, the metaphors form consistent conceptual patterns, such as emotions as physical entities, life as a journey, and self-development as a process of struggle. The study also finds that metaphors in the album carry critical meanings, challenging modern societal values such as productivity pressure, social expectations, and the measurement of success through numerical achievement. In conclusion, metaphors in Mantra Mantra function not only as aesthetic elements but also as cognitive and critical tools that shape human understanding of emotional experiences. They enable listeners to interpret complex psychological conditions and reflect on themes of mental health, self-awareness, and personal growth.

Abstract

This study examined semantic entailment in the dialogues of the main characters in the movie Set It Up (2018). The research aimed to identify the types of entailment used and determine the most dominant type in the film. A descriptive qualitative method was applied, focusing on textual analysis of spoken utterances produced by the main characters, Harper Moore and Charlie Young. The data were collected through visual analysis and note-taking techniques, including watching the movie, transcribing dialogues, and selecting relevant utterances containing entailment. The findings revealed that four types of entailment were identified, namely one-way entailment, two-way entailment, negative entailment, and metaphorical entailment. A total of 30 data were analyzed, showing that one-way entailment was the most dominant type, followed by negative entailment, two-way entailment, and metaphorical entailment. The results indicated that entailment played an important role in constructing meaning, expressing intentions, and creating humor in the dialogues. In conclusion, semantic entailment contributed significantly to meaning-making in film discourse, particularly in reflecting interpersonal relationships and communicative strategies within a workplace setting.
