Abstract

This study aims to determine students' learning motivation in studying English. The motivation of this research is divided into intrinsic and extrinsic motivations. This study uses quantitative descriptive research. The research population is class 2A and 2B. The sample of this research is class 2B consisting of 23 students, with the instruments of observation, questionnaire, interview, and documentation. In conclusion, Students' Learning Motivation in Studying English at SMP Al-Qur'an Putra Bahari Kota Ternate in class 2B is more influenced by extrinsic motivation (271). Based on the results of the research, generally, the students of SMP Al-Qur'an Putra Bahari Kota Ternate do not have an awareness of the learning experience so the intrinsic motivation of these students is low, as we know that in general English learners are students who are in the category of instrumental motivation. Therefore, the extrinsic factor is more dominant to spur students' enthusiasm for learning while integrative motivation is not comparable to instrumental motivation. This motivation is the reason why students especially students of SMP Al-Quran Putra Bahari Kota Ternate have an intrinsic motivation that is not comparable to extrinsic motivation.

Abstract

Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) is an instructional approach that prioritizes the development of communication skills, utilizing language in contexts relevant to daily activities. However, its application, particularly in English speaking lessons, presents various challenges and difficulties for students. The primary objective of this study was to explore students' perceptions and attitudes toward the use of CLT in improving English speaking skill. This research adopted a descriptive quantitative design, with participants consisted of 55 third-semester students from the English Education Study Program at Universitas Khairun. Data were gathered through a Google Form survey containing a Likert scale-based questionnaire with 20 items. The data were subsequently analyzed by using mean scores and percentage distributions. The findings revealed that students generally held a positive view of CLT in English speaking instruction, as evidenced by an overall mean score of 3.79, corresponding to a "high" level of agreement, with 75.85% of respondents in the "agree" category. CLT was found to boost students' confidence in speaking English. Furthermore, students exhibited a positive attitude toward CLT, with an average attitude score of 3.7, indicating a "high" level of agreement, and 74% agreeing with the approach. This positive response is attributed to the variety, enjoyment, and engaging of the activities included in CLT. However, an area for improvement identified in the study is the alignment of English speaking lesson materials with the students' proficiency levels to ensure more effective learning outcomes.

Abstract

One of the skills that 21st-century human resources must have is the capacity for critical thinking. The capacity for critical thinking is the capacity for thoughtful decision-making and problem-solving. This study aims to illustrate how students in the English Language Education Study Program use critical thinking to analyze literary works in the form of digital short tales. The quantitative descriptive approach was employed in this study. 33 students in semester IV were the focus of this study. 6 descriptive questions that were created based on critical thinking skill indicators from Facione (2015) and verified by professionals were used as part of the data collecting approach. The results of the research demonstrated that when examining literary works in the format of digital short tales, self-regulation is a sign of mastery in critical thinking abilities, whereas inference is a sign of difficulty. According to the proportion of students who met the very critical thinking criterion, 21% of students think critically, 27% think less critically, and 43% think very less critically. Of the students, 9% met the very critical thinking criteria. The average score that was earned altogether was 51.1. Consequently, it is evident that the fourth semester English language education study program students' critical thinking abilities fall into the less critical category at Khairun University.

Abstract

The goal of teaching English as a foreign language in Indonesia (TEFLIN), or in a wider context—teaching English as a global language (TEGL) or teaching English as an international language (TEIL), is that the students are able to authentically communicate with others using the target language in real life situations: attending lectures or seminars, having a chat via the Internet, discussing TV programmes, bargaining items in markets, etc. When the communication takes place, the four macro language skills are integratedly employed to convey and receive messages as the contents of communications. This vividly seems that language in use must have contents because language itself merely consists of symbols, grammatical rules in the forms of patterns, and skills. In TEFLIN or TEGL/TEIL, therefore, the teachers/lecturers of English should cater the students with meaningful contents appropriate for them to develop their four macro language skills in meaningful learning atmosphere. The contents encompass the target culture and students' local wisdom related to their real-life situations. The target culture is employed as meaningful input texts for receptive skills: listening and reading. The input texts are then employed to explore and elaborate on local wisdom related to the target culture for productive skills: writing and speaking. The steps proposed are as follows: 1) warming the students up with relevant situation to the topic, 2) presenting input texts about the target culture to discuss (listening or reading), 3) analysing the ways of expressing ideas used in the target language—English, 4) analysing and discussing the language elements, and 5) employing the learned ways of expressing ideas in productive skills (writing and speaking) about local wisdom related to students’ real-life situations in the target language.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the types of errors made by students in translating texts. The research involved 22 students from class B, semester 5 in the English Education Study Program at Khairun University. This research employed a qualitative method to identify and categorize the translation errors made by the students. The findings revealed four types of errors: omission, addition, misformation, and misordering errors. The results showed that 11.7% of students made omission errors, while 7.8% made addition errors, making it the least frequent error type. Misformation errors were found in 19.5% of students. The most dominant type of error was misordering errors, which occurred in 61% of students. Among all the identified errors, misordering errors were the most frequent type found in class B, semester 5 students. The findings indicate that misordering errors significantly affect the accuracy and clarity of students' translations.
