Abstract

This paper describes the improvement of third-grade elementary students’ writing skills of expression (instruction, announcement, appreciation, and invitation) of grade 3 elementary students by applying a problem-based learning model assisted by Scrolling Picture media. The research method used was classroom action research. The research was conducted in two cycles. Each consists of four stages, namely planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The results indicate an increasing average of students' skills in writing expressions (instruction, announcement, appreciation, and invitation) in class. An increasing average score of writing expression skills was 71 when the pre-test results increased to 93 in the post-test of cycle I. In this cycle, the average score increased to 22 or 31%. Meanwhile, students who have reached the Minimum Completeness Criteria have also increased from 46% to 89%. In cycle II, otherwise, the student’s skills to write expressions increased compared to the cycle I post-test, which was from 93 in the post-test of cycle I increased to 98 in the post-test of cycle II. In this cycle, the average score increased by 5 or 5.3%. Meanwhile, students who have reached the Minimum Completeness Criteria also increased from 89% to 100%. It is considered satisfying enough for teachers and researchers as the indicator has been achieved successfully. It can be concluded that there is an increasing average value of expression writing skills by applying the problem-based learning model assisted by Scrolling Picture media. The increase is also seen in the students’ enthusiasm and motivation in participating in learning, carrying out responsibility, and conducting cooperation in finishing the tasks provided by the teacher.

Abstract

Mathematics presents significant learning challenges for students globally, which is often reflected in poor academic performance. This research explores the potential of traditional Indonesian games to enhance math learning, an under-explored approach that can also contribute to cultural preservation This research investigates how traditional Indonesian games can enhance math learning. We conducted a Systematic Literature Review, selecting articles through keyword searches in the Google Scholar database. The criteria used were articles on Indonesian traditional games. The result of this study is that traditional Indonesian games can enhance math learning by: (1) Presenting a strong rationale that the use of Indonesian traditional games in mathematics learning is often motivated by difficulties in learning mathematics as well as cultural preservation; (2) Integrating traditional games in mathematics learning according to students' characteristics, especially at the elementary level; (3) Applying relevant mathematics topics, such as geometry and number, in traditional games; (4) Integrating traditional games that are widely known by students, such as engklek and congklak, in mathematics learning; (5) Apply the presentation technique of integrating traditional games and mathematics through learning activities at school with teachers; (6) Realize that the integration of traditional games in mathematics learning affects students' affective, cognitive, psychomotor, and skill abilities that will improve their mathematics abilities.

Abstract

Indonesia is a country that has a variety of cultural arts, one of which is shadow puppetry (Wayang). Wayang, in a staged, simple, and minimalist manner, is called Wayang Climen. Wayang Climen has been performed since the COVID-19 pandemic as a solution to keep working while still complying with health protocols. Utilization through YouTube social media attracts people to watch and provide opinions through comments. This opinion is beneficial and can be used as a feasibility study through sentiment analysis information classified as positive, negative, and neutral opinions. Sentiment analysis determines a person's opinion and tendency to opinionated sentences. The methods used are Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Naïve Bayes (NB). The dataset comes from YouTube comments of Dalang Seno and Ki Seno Nugroho. The best accuracy is generated by SVM (70.29%). The positive sentiment shows the public's appreciation for the Wayang Climen performance, which ultimately represents the performance even though it is staged densely. This research contributes to effectively utilizing digital platforms for cultural preservation and audience engagement during challenging times, demonstrating the potential for innovative solutions in traditional arts and entertainment.

Abstract

Indonesia faces significant literacy challenges, as evidenced by persistently low Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) scores. To address this issue, a multifaceted analysis is required, particularly examining the characteristics of literacy questions featured in Indonesian language assessments administered to students. One critical factor contributing to poor literacy outcomes is the quality of instruction, which necessitates further scrutiny of assessment design to evaluate the efficacy of learning materials. This study investigates the structural and cognitive dimensions of reading literacy questions in Indonesian language assessments to identify potential shortcomings. Employing a descriptive research approach, the study analyzes the typology of questions, cognitive demand levels (including 1) information retrieval, 2) comprehension, and 3) evaluation and reflection), question quantity, and textual stimuli utilized in summative assessments for eleventh-grade high school students. The findings reveal that the assessments predominantly consist of multiple-choice questions, with a total of 30–50 items per test. The distribution of cognitive levels was uneven: Level 1 (basic information retrieval) accounted for 17% of questions, Level 2 (comprehension) constituted 66%, while Level 3 (evaluation and reflection) represented only 4%. Additionally, the textual stimuli were primarily presented as excerpts or fragmented continuous texts. These findings are subject to limitations, as the study did not account for teacher backgrounds or testing infrastructure conditions. Nevertheless, the results provide valuable insights for Indonesian language educators, serving as a foundation for refining assessment strategies and diversifying evaluation methods to enhance literacy development.
