Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of applying solid compost and coal fly ash on the improvement of Ultisol chemical properties and to determine the optimal dosage for its application. Ultisol, known for its high acidity, low organic matter content, and limited nutrient availability, requires specific amendments for optimization. The study was conducted using a factorial completely randomized design (CRD) with 12 treatment combinations: four levels of solid compost (0 t.ha-1, 2,5 t.ha-1, 5 t.ha-1 dan 7,5 t.ha-1) and three levels of fly ash (0 t.ha-1, 3 t.ha-1 and 6 t.ha-1), each with three replications. The soil that has been treated is incubated for two weeks, then the chemical properties of the soil are analyzed. The results showed that the combination of solid compost and fly ash significantly improved Ultisol chemical properties, including increasing soil pH, reducing Al-dd levels, and enhancing P-available, organic carbon (organic C), total nitrogen (total N), cation exchange capacity (CEC), and total potassium (total K). The combination of 7,5 t.ha-1 solid compost and 6 t.ha-1 fly ash provided the best results, achieving a soil pH of 5.15, an increase available P to 23.7 ppm, and a high CEC level. This combination effectively improved Ultisol quality, making it more supportive for plant growth.

Abstract

The addition of ameliorant Fe3+ and rock phosphates containing high Fe cation can reduce effect of toxic organic acids, increase peat stability through formation of complex compounds and reduce carbon emission. The research was conducted in the laboratory and green house of the Departement of Soil Science, Faculty of Agriculture, Bogor Agriculture University. Peat samples with hemic degree of decomposition were taken from Riau. Rock phosphates were taken from the rock phosphates of PT. Petrokimia Gresik, Christmas Island phosphates, and Huinan China and FeCl3.6H2O was used as the other Fe3+ source.  The aims of the research were to study (a) the effect of the applications of ameliorant Fe3+ and rock phosphates on the P content of plants dan (b) the effect of the application ameliorant Fe3+ and the contribution of Fe cation in rock phosphates in the decrease of carbon emission. The results showed that the P content of plants rice increased 58 – 286 % with the applications of ameliorant Fe3+ and rock phosphates. The estimation of carbon loss through CO2 and CH4 emissions from peats if planted continuously with rice was around 2.5, 2.2 and 2.6   Mg of C ha-1 year-1 respectively in field capacity condition, two times of field capacity condition, and 5 cm of saturated condition.  The application of ameliorant Fe3+ and rock phosphates containing high Fe cation increased the stability of peats and reduced the carbon loss around  1.7 Mg of C ha-1 year-1 (64%) in 5 cm of saturated condition, 1,3 Mg of C ha-1 year-1 (58%) in two times of field capacity condition, and 1.0 Mg of C ha-1 year-1 (41%) in field capacity condition.

Abstract

The average productivity of upland rice in Indonesia is around 4.4 tons per ha, significantly lower than its potential yield of 8.5 Mg per ha. The utilization of synthetic zeolite as a soil amendment and liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) is one of the technologies that can be applied to increase the growth and yield of upland rice. This study was carried out by factorial experiment with 2 factors: synthetic zeolite application at 4 levels (0, 100, 150, and 200 kg per ha), and catfish LOF application at 3 levels (0, 200, and 400 ml per clump), and each combina- tion was repeated three times. The results showed that applying synthetic zeolite and catfish LOF at each dose had no significant effect on plant height, maximum number of tillers and productive tillers, panicle exit age, harvest age, and weight of milled dry grain per clump. The interaction of synthetic zeolite at a dose of 100 kg per ha with catfish LOF at a dose of 400 ml per clump increased the number of pithy grains per panicle by 70%, the weight of milled dry grain per clump by 68%, and the harvest index 37.5% significantly compared to control (no treatment).

Abstract

The productivity of upland rice on sub-optimal land such as Ultisol is low. Increasing rice productivity can be attempted, for example, by applying rice husk zeolite and K fertilizer. This research aims to study the interaction of rice husk zeolite with K fertilizer on the growth and yield of upland rice on Ultisol. The research was conducted at the Soil and Greenhouse Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Riau, from June to October 2022. The research was conducted experimentally in a factorial with a completely randomized design (CRD). The first factor was rice husk zeolite consisting of 3 levels (0, 200, and 400 kg ha-1), and the second factor was K fertilizer consisting of 3 levels (0, 50, and 100 kg K2O ha-1), each interaction repeated three times. The results showed that the combination value of rice husk zeolite at a dose of 200 kg ha-1 with K fertilizer at a dose of 50 kg K2O ha-1 increased the number of healthy grains per panicle by 21%, the proportion of healthy grain by 14% and the weight of dry milled grain by 32.25% compared to without rice husk zeolite and K fertilizer.

Abstract

This research aims to understand the interaction between Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF) and zeolite fly ash (FA) from coal and their impact on soybean productivity in Podzolic soil. The study was conducted in Aur Sakti Village, Tambang District, Kampar Regency, and the Soil Science Laboratory and Plant Ecophysiology Laboratory of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Riau, over a four-month period from March to June 2022. The experiment employed a completely randomized design (CRD) with two factors: FA zeolite doses (Z0-Z3) and AMF doses (M0-M2). The results of the study indicate that the interaction of AMF Glomus sp or Gigaspora sp at 10 g per plant with FA zeolite at a dose of 1.5 g per plant enhances plant growth and soybean yield most optimally. FA zeolite at a dose of 1 g per plant also effectively improves soybean yield in terms of the weight of 100 seeds. Specifically, the application of FA zeolite at a dose of 1.5 g per plant yields the best results in terms of plant height, number of productive branches, flowering and harvesting age, number of seeds per plant, weight of seeds per plant, and weight of 100 seeds, compared to treatments without zeolite, with zeolite FA doses of 0.5 and 1 g per plant. The application of AMF Glomus sp and Gigaspora sp, each at 10 g per plant, also enhances the growth and yield of soybeans compared to treatments without AMF.
