Abstract

Introduction: Emotional exhaustion among hospital nurses represents a major occupational health challenge, particularly in healthcare systems facing increasing service demands and workforce constraints. Identifying organizational determinants based on the Job Demands–Resources (JD-R) framework is essential to inform context-specific workforce strategies. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 72 nurses working in various clinical units at a hospital in Gresik, Indonesia. Cluster sampling was applied to ensure proportional representation across units. Emotional exhaustion was measured using the Emotional Exhaustion subscale of the Maslach Burnout Inventory–Human Services Survey. Job demands (workload, emotional demands, role conflict, workplace incivility) and job resources (supervisor support, organizational support, team support, job autonomy) were assessed using validated questionnaires. Data were analyzed using multiple linear regression to determine the relative contribution of each predictor. Results: Job demands and job resources were significant predictors of emotional exhaustion (p < 0.001), accounting for 50% of the variance. Workload emerged as the strongest positive predictor, followed by emotional demands. Among job resources, supervisor support demonstrated the most substantial protective effect. Higher job demands were associated with increased emotional exhaustion, whereas stronger job resources were associated with reduced levels of exhaustion. Discussion: The findings reinforce the JD-R framework, highlighting the interplay between structural workload pressures and organizational support mechanisms in shaping nurse wellbeing. Organizational strategies focusing on workload management and strengthening supervisory support may contribute to reducing emotional exhaustion in hospital settings.

Abstract

Introduction: Parents raising a child with disabilities experience a range of complex physical, psychological, social, and economic challenges. Internal psychological factors, particularly self-efficacy, often influence a parent's ability to cope with these difficulties. Higher levels of self-efficacy improve a family's capacity to adapt to and recover from the stress of caregiving, a concept known as family resilience. This study aims to explore the relationship between self-efficacy and family resilience among parents of children with disabilities. Method: This study employed a quantitative correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. The study population consisted of 59 parents of children with disabilities, selected using total sampling. Data were collected using a modified self-efficacy questionnaire based on Bandura’s theory and a family resilience questionnaire adapted from Walsh’s model. Data analysis was conducted using Spearman Rank correlation with a significance level of α = 0.05. Results: The findings indicated that the majority of respondents exhibited high self-efficacy (94.9%) and high family resilience (96.6%). A very strong positive correlation was identified between self-efficacy and family resilience (r = 0.809; p < 0.001). Conclusion: The study reveals a strong link between self-efficacy and family resilience in parents of children with disabilities. It underscores the need to enhance parental self-efficacy to boost family resilience when facing caregiving challenges.

Abstract

Introduction: Effective nurse–doctor collaboration is fundamental to delivering high-quality hospital care. However, interprofessional collaboration often remains suboptimal due to hierarchical dynamics and limited managerial competence among nurse leaders. This study examined the influence of head nurses’ leadership style, particularly democratic leadership, on nurse–doctor collaboration in hospital settings. Methods: a cross-sectional correlational study was conducted at a regional general hospital in Indonesia, with data collected in April 2023. A total of 49 respondents were recruited using purposive sampling. Leadership style was assessed using the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ–5X Rater Form, 45 items), while nurse–doctor collaboration was measured with the Jefferson Scale of Attitudes toward Physician–Nurse Collaboration (JSAPNC, 15 items). Content validity was established through expert judgment (CVI = 0.87), and reliability testing demonstrated good internal consistency (Cronbach’s α = 0.82 for MLQ; α = 0.85 for JSAPNC). Data were analyzed using the Chi-square test with a significance level of p < 0.05. Results: In major (69.4%) respondents perceived their head nurse’s leadership style as democratic. Additionally, 61.2% reported good nurse–doctor collaboration. Statistical analysis revealed a significant association between democratic leadership style and nurse–doctor collaboration (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Democratic leadership among head nurses is significantly associated with stronger nurse–doctor collaboration. Enhancing democratic leadership competencies may promote more effective interprofessional teamwork and contribute to improved quality of care in hospital settings.
