Abstract

This research aims to develop discovery learning-based teaching materials on quadratic functions to improve mathematical representation abilities of grade X students. The low mathematical representation ability of Indonesian students reflected in TIMSS 2015 results is the research background. Research and Development (R&D) methodology with a 4D model (Define, Design, Develop, Disseminate) was used to develop the learning product. Validation was conducted by three mathematics education experts, practicality testing through student response questionnaires, and effectiveness was measured using a Post-test Only Control Group design comparing experimental and control classes. The findings showed very high validity at 91.54%, practicality reached 79.31% in the practical category, and significant effectiveness demonstrated through average score increase from 73.27 to 83.20 (sig = 0.000 < 0.05). The Z proportion test yielded 1.8974 > 1.645, indicating more than 75% of students achieved the minimum mastery standard. This teaching material successfully facilitates mathematical representation skill development through structured discovery activities, although visual representation aspects need further optimization. The discovery learning approach effectively optimizes students' knowledge construction through meaningful learning experiences while overcoming conventional learning limitations in developing mathematical representation competencies

Abstract

Based on PISA results, Indonesian students’ mathematical critical thinking skills and habits of mind are still at a very low level. The study aims to investigate the impact of the Creative Problem Solving (CPS) model on enhancing these two aspects both collectively and across varying levels of Initial Mathematical Ability (IMA) among eighth-grade students in the Senapelan District of Pekanbaru City. The population of this research consisted of all eighth-grade students in the Senapelan District, and the sample included 254 students. An experimental design employing a pretest–posttest control group framework was implemented, involving four experimental classes and four control classes. Data were obtained through a mathematical critical thinking skills test based on Higher Order Thinking Skills and a habits of mind questionnaire. The results of the statistical analysis demonstrated that the CPS model significantly improved students’ mathematical critical thinking skills and habits of mind. Moreover, an interaction effect was observed between the CPS model and students’ IMA on the development of mathematical critical thinking skills, whereas no such interaction emerged concerning habits of mind. These findings indicate that the CPS model is capable of promoting the development of mathematical critical thinking skills and positive learning dispositions among Phase D students.

Abstract

Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) are essential competencies that students must possess. Many students still exhibit low levels of HOTS. This study aims to develop a Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) instrument in comparison content for Phase D students. The research employed a development studies model consisting of two main stages: the preliminary stage and formative evaluation. The formative evaluation stage comprised several steps, including self-evaluation, expert review, one-to-one, small group, and field testing. The research subjects involved 30 Phase D students. Data were collected through validation sheets, student readability questionnaires, and HOTS test results, which were analyzed using Anates Uraian 4.0.5 software. The results indicated that the ten HOTS items developed met both rational and empirical validity criteria, showed very high reliability (0.95), had varying levels of difficulty (two easy, six moderate, and two difficult items), and demonstrated good discriminating power. Therefore, the developed HOTS instrument on comparison content is considered feasible to be used as an evaluation tool to enhance students’ critical, analytical, and creative thinking skills.
