Abstract

Background: Continuity of Care (CoC) is a midwifery care approach emphasizing continuous and interpersonal relationships between health providers and women throughout pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum, and family planning periods. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the impact of CoC implementation by midwifery students on women’s trust in health services. Methods: The research involved 30 women who received CoC care from students of the Midwifery Professional Program, Faculty of Medicine, Andalas University. Data were collected through observation of CoC implementation and a validated trust questionnaire covering four dimensions: students’ competence, interaction comfort, confidentiality, and readiness to receive care. Results: Statistical analysis using a paired t-test showed a significant increase in women’s trust scores after receiving CoC (mean score increased from 3.2 to 4.4; p < 0.05). Linear regression analysis indicated that the quality of CoC implementation significantly influenced women’s trust levels (R² = 0.52). Conclusion: These findings demonstrate that CoC provided by midwifery students not only enhances the quality of care but also strengthens the trust relationship between women and health providers. The results are expected to contribute to the development of midwifery education curricula emphasizing continuity of care and empathy in clinical practice.

Abstract

Introduction: Maternal readiness for childbirth is a critical indicator of successful labor outcomes. Maternal unpreparedness can lead to increased anxiety, impaired decision-making, and prolonged labor duration. The Continuity of Care (CoC) model, defined as midwifery care provided continuously from pregnancy to the postpartum period by the same healthcare provider, is believed to enhance maternal self-confidence, interpersonal closeness, and readiness for childbirth. Given these potential benefits, evaluating CoC’s impact on childbirth readiness is essential. Objective: Building on the introduction, this study aims to assess the effectiveness of the CoC model in improving childbirth readiness among third-trimester pregnant women. Materials and Methods: This study employed a quasi-experimental pretest–posttest design with a control group. The sample comprised 60 pregnant women in the third trimester, including 30 in the intervention group and 30 in the control group. The research instrument was a childbirth readiness questionnaire covering knowledge, emotional readiness, birth planning, social support, and physical preparedness. Data were analyzed using paired t-tests, independent t-tests, and effect-size analyses. Results: There was a significant increase in childbirth readiness scores in the intervention group after receiving CoC (from 60.2 to 85.6; p < 0.001). The control group did not show a significant improvement (p = 0.074). Independent t-test analysis revealed a significant difference between groups in posttest scores (p < 0.001). The effect size of 0.82 indicates a substantial impact of CoC on childbirth readiness. Conclusion: The CoC model is more effective than conventional antenatal care at enhancing childbirth readiness among third-trimester pregnant women.

Abstract

Background: Continuity of Care (CoC) is an essential model in maternal and newborn health services. However, CoC provided by midwifery students often stops after family planning services due to limited academic practice schedules. This study explored the potential use of telemedicine as a strategy to maintain CoC provided by midwifery students. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of telemedicine in supporting midwifery students to maintain continuity of care for mothers and newborns in Padang, Indonesia. Methods: A mixed-methods study was conducted involving 20 midwifery students and 20 mothers who received CoC in Padang, Indonesia. Quantitative data were collected through structured questionnaires measuring satisfaction, accessibility, and continuity of care. Qualitative data were obtained from in-depth interviews and focus group discussions (FGD). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. Results: Quantitative findings showed that 85% of mothers were satisfied with telemedicine services, and 78% of students reported improved confidence in maintaining contact with clients. Thematic analysis revealed three key benefits: increased accessibility, improved maternal education, and enhanced student learning. Challenges included internet connectivity issues and limited digital literacy among some mothers. Conclusion: Telemedicine is a feasible and effective tool to sustain CoC by midwifery students. Integration into clinical education is recommended to strengthen maternal and neonatal health services in Indonesia.

Abstract

A nutritional status assessment is a process undertaken to facilitating optimal development. Normal growth is defined as the optimal nutritional and health status, as indicated by conformity with the parameters set forth in growth charts. The objective of this activity is to gather data pertaining to the nutritional status of all students in grades IV, V, and VI of SDN 22 Andalas Padang, while concurrently imparting health education related to menarche as part of the students' overall growth and development. The assessment of nutritional status was conducted through the measurement of height and weight, with the calculation of the Body Mass Index and Age, of 110 students in grades IV, V, and VI of SDN 22 Andalas Padang. Additionally, health education about menarche was provided through presentations and the distribution of booklets. The results of the activity demonstrated a high level of acceptance and positive response from the teachers and leaders. The nutritional status of the students was found to be generally good, with only 4% of students having poor nutritional status, 80% having good nutritional status, 11% having overweight status, and 5% having obese nutritional status. Furthermore, the students displayed enthusiasm during the educational sessions. It can be concluded that the majority of SDN 22 Andalas Padang students have a normal nutritional status. Hopefully, this activity will form the basis for schools to carry out monitoring interventions for the nutritional status of school-age children and the continuation of regular activities by involving cross-sectoral partners.
