Abstract

The Covid-19 virus is transmitted from human to human through close contact with infected people through their respiratory droplets. A person can also be infected by touching an object contaminated with SARS-CoV-2 and then followed by reaching the eyes, nose, or mouth. Implementing the health protocol is necessary to reduce the number of virus transmissions. In addition, to increase the community's immune against Covid-19, WHO and the government have been developing a vaccination program. However, the recommendation from the latest research stated that people still have to obey the health protocol even after being vaccinated. The purpose of this community service was to help the government to increase people's understanding of the importance of implying health protocols, even after vaccination, to suppress Covid-19 cases. The method used is by holding an online event called a Webinar. It followed by a statement with audiences to commit to implementing the health protocol led by the Rector of Andalas University, then called a SIAGA SAKATO declaration. The activity began with a pre-test questionnaire for initial information collection, followed by education about Covid-19 prevention from the experts to the 512 students. The activity ended with the final data collection using a posttest questionnaire to test the student knowledge after the education. Paired t-test analysis showed a significant increase in student commitment after attending the Webinar (P≤0.05). Based on these results, the Webinar increases students' understanding of the importance of the health protocol in reducing the Covid-19 cases.

Abstract

Plastic is a global problem; plastic pollution production reaches 350 million tons annually. This plastic pollution will be degraded into microplastic. This microplastic will pollute the environment and negatively impacted health if exposed too much. Recent research has found microplastics in clothes, toys, and even food. The Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Andalas conducts outreach to the public to enhance the general public's understanding of microplastics and their impact on health. The outreach activity began with filling out a pre-test to assess the public's understanding of microplastics. Followed by education about microplastic exposure, the dangers of microplastics, and education about a healthy lifestyle to reduce sources of microplastic exposure. The event ended with filling out a post-test by participants. Paired t-test analysis on pre-test and post-test data showed an increase in public understanding regarding microplastics, sources of exposure, health impacts and ways to reduce microplastic exposure. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the provision of public service can increase public understanding regarding the sources of microplastics and their impact on health and encourage people to live a healthy lifestyle that minimizes exposure to microplastics.

Abstract

D-galactose is a reducing sugar that induces oxidative stress by increasing the production of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and Advanced Glycation End-products (AGEs), processes also associated with aging. Akar kayu kuning (Arcangelisia flava Merr.) extract contains antioxidant compounds that neutralize free radicals and mitigate oxidative stress. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of akar kayu kuning extract on the histopathological alterations of the kidneys in D-galactose-induced mice (Mus musculus). A true experimental study with a post-test-only control group design was conducted using 25 mice, divided into five groups: a negative control, a positive control (administered D-galactose at 150 mg/kgBW), and three experimental groups that received akar kayu kuning extract at doses of 250 mg/kgBW, 500 mg/kgBW, and 750 mg/kgBW following D-galactose induction. Kidney tissues were stained with hematoxylin and eosin (HE), and the extent of histopathological damage was quantified using ImageJ software. Statistical analysis using the Kruskal-Wallis test revealed significant differences between the experimental groups and the positive control (p < 0.05). The findings demonstrate that akar kayu kuning extract significantly reduces kidney histopathological damage in D-galactose-induced mice, highlighting its potential as a natural antioxidant for preventing oxidative stress-related renal impairment.
