Abstract

Furfural is a valuable furan-based organic compound widely used in the chemical and pharmaceutical industries, and as an intermediate in the production of furfuryl alcohol and furanone. However, Indonesia still relies on imports due to the absence of local furfural producers. Rice husk, an abundant agricultural waste rich in pentosan, offers promising potential as an alternative raw material. This study aims to determine the kinetic equation for furfural formation from rice husk (Oryza sativa) using a two-stage method with sulfuric acid as a catalyst. The process involves hydrolysis of pentosan into pentose, followed by dehydration into furfural. Temperature (80–100 °C) and reaction time (20–60 minutes) variations were applied to observe their effect on furfural concentration, analyzed using the iodometric titration (Excess Iodine Method). Results show that the reaction follows first-order kinetics, with linear graphs and R² values approaching 1. Furfural concentration increased with both temperature and time. The activation energy obtained was 21.62 kJ/mol and the pre-exponential factor (k₀) was 14.26. This study confirms that the two-stage method is more effective in enhancing furfural production from rice husk biomass.

Abstract

Corn silk, a part of the maize plant that plays a role in pollination, is often considered agricultural waste and has not been optimally utilized. However, it contains bioactive compounds with potential antimicrobial properties. The main problem addressed in this study is the underutilization of corn silk as a source of valuable bioactive compounds, particularly flavonoids and alkaloids, which can be developed for health-related applications. This research aims to investigate the effect of extraction temperature and time variations on the levels of flavonoid compound 9,12-Octadecadionic Acid (Z,Z)-, Methyl Ester and alkaloid compound 6-(Dimethylnitroryl)-4,4-Diphenyl-3-Heptanone in corn silk extract. The method used was maceration with 80% ethanol as the solvent, followed by analysis to determine the optimum conditions. The results showed that the optimum condition for 6-(Dimethylnitroryl)-4,4-Diphenyl-3-Heptanone was achieved at 50°C for 5 hours, yielding a concentration of 21.57%. Meanwhile, the optimum condition for 9,12-Octadecadionic Acid (Z,Z)-, Methyl Ester was obtained at 40°C for 5 hours, with a concentration of 21.62%. These findings indicate that corn silk has promising potential as a source of bioactive compounds, offering added value for agricultural waste utilization. Furthermore, this study provides implications for the development of corn silk–based products with economic and health benefits.

Abstract

The frigate tuna (Euthynnus affinis) is known for its high protein content in the head, making it suitable for the production of protein concentrate used in animal feed. This research aims to investigate the influence of adding a methanol-acetone mixture solvent, the duration of the extraction process, and the protein content in the resulting concentrate using the Kjeldahl method. The protein concentrate is produced through the maceration extraction method, where 30 grams of the frigate tuna head sample is mixed with a methanol-acetone solvent in various ratios (1:9; 3:7; 5:5; 7:3; 9:1) at a temperature of 50 °C and a stirring speed of 500 rpm, with extraction times ranging from 2 to 6 hours. Subsequently, filtration is performed, and the precipitate is dried using an oven at 100 °C for 30 minutes. The dried sample is then subjected to protein content testing using the Kjeldahl method. Research results indicate that both protein content and extraction yield values increase with the duration of the extraction process, while the water content decreases. The optimal result in maceration extraction is achieved with the methanol-acetone mixture (9:1) treatment and a 6-hour extraction time, yielding a protein content of 89.15 %, water content of 5.57 %, and an extraction yield of 23.86 %.Protein concentrate can be used as animal feed to increase protein needs. Abstract

AbstrakKeberadaan lahan tidur di daerah pemukiman dapat menjadi sumber permasalahan bagi warga karena menjadi sarang hewan liar yang tentunya mengganggu kenyamanan masyarakat setempat. Lahan tidur di wilayah Kosagrha Lestari merupakan lahan milik pemerintah kota yang telah lama terbengkalai, ditumbuhi oleh rerumputan liar serta penuh dengan sampah-sampah seperti sampah sisa bangunan, sampah plastik dan botol-botol. Tim Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PkM) dari Universitas Pembangunan Nasional “Veteran” Jawa Timur (UPNVJT), dalam program pengabdian kepada masyarakat, bekerjasama dengan Kelompok Tani Kosagrha Lestari memanfaatkan lahan tidur tersebut menjadi lahan budidaya tanaman serai wangi. Pendekatan program pengabdian yang dilakukan adalah melakukan aksi (action) yang kemudian diikuti dengan diskusi tanya jawab dalam forum resmi (talk show). Hasil dari pengabdian masyarakat dengan metode pendekatan yang dilakukan adalah bahwa masyarakat memiliki ketertarikan dan kepercayaan lebih terhadap program yang sebelumnya terbukti berhasil dilakukan. Teknik budidaya yang disarankan dapat diaplikasikan pada lahan tidur di Kosagrha dan menghasilkan lahan budidaya serai wangi yang tumbuh dengan baik. Kata kunci: lahan tidur; pupuk kandang; serai wangi; teknik budidaya Abstract Unused land in residential areas can be a problem source for residents because it becomes a nest for wild animals, which disturbs the local community's comfort. The idle land in the Kosagrha Lestari area, which belongs to the government, has been neglected for a long time, overgrown with weeds and full of rubbish such as building waste, plastic waste, and bottles. The community servise team of UPNVJT collaborated with the Kosagrha Lestari Farmers Group in a community service program, utilizing that idle land to become citronella cultivation land. The service program's approach was taking action followed by a question-and-answer discussion in an official forum (talk show). The results of this community service activity using the approach method were that the community had more interest and trust in a program with successful evidence. The cultivation technique suggested could be applied to the unused land in Kosagrha and generate a well-cultivated land of citronella. Keywords: unused land; manure; citronella; cultivation technique
