Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The majority of learning and teaching activities during the COVID-19 era were distributed to remote learners. The ineffectiveness of face-to-face instruction was subsequently put aside as students felt comfortable learning online. Policymakers in the education system had to adjust to a new normal or habit once the COVID-19 cases started to decline. The aim of this research is to identify the challenges faced by final year students in completing thesis during the Post-Covid-19 New Normal Habitus period and to find out how final year students can complete their thesis guidance during the Post-Covid-19 New Normal Habitus period. There were 15 English students joining the interview and the research was conducted within the State Islamic campus in Jambi City. Coding system was implemented to get credible data. The result shows that Completing studies in the New Normal Era has several obstacles. One of the most significant problems is the communication problem between students and supervisors which involves internal and external factors. Internal factors focus on difficulties caused by students' lack of understanding of thesis components, references and citation styles. Meanwhile, external factors focus on students' difficulties in the thesis writing process which depends on the direction of the supervisor, where some lecturers still provide online thesis guidance, where students agree that online counseling is not effective.

Academic writing is intended to contribute to the field of education both practically and theoretically. This scientific research focuses on descriptive analysis of lecturers' voices about the struggle in achieving a publication target. The author uses a qualitative method with a phenomenological design and semi-structured interviews to obtain data from selected senior lecturers at certain public institutions. In general, the findings of this research are categorized into six points. Of the two sub-themes, the research results tend to lead to positive and negative attitudes in English-language publications. Furthermore, the discursive challenge shows that Participants have difficulty writing with regard to word choice, grammar, and vocabulary bank, while the non-discursive challenge shows that Participants have difficulty processing their soft skills such as time management in writing and financial management in publications. In terms of psychology, the lecturers' internal motivation in writing is the target for achieving a higher career. The more they write, the more performance points they get so they can reach a certain career level. Meanwhile, external motivation is in the form of government regulations and legal institutions that require an educator in higher education to carry out scientific activities such as research and reports in the form of published scientific articles. The implications of this research are expecting support from the institution where they work and the writer's family to understand their obligations as a lecturer.

Abstract

Reflective practice is illustrated in how instructional strategies are organized, developed, implemented, and evaluated by pre-service teachers, while assessments are utilized to offer feedback to educators, supporting the maintenance or enhancement of their pedagogical methods. By participating in reflective practices, pre-service teachers' understanding and appreciation of the inherent value and passion of teaching can be deepened, which subsequently becomes visible in their professional behavior. This study examined the perceptions of pre-service English teachers regarding their experiences with reflective journaling during their teaching practicum. A qualitative approach was employed, utilizing a case study design, with data collected from ten pre-service English teachers at an Islamic public university in Jambi, consisting of eight female and two male students. Data were gathered through interviews and analyzed using an open coding method. The findings suggest that pre-service teachers primarily reflected on their classroom teaching abilities, particularly focusing on the technical aspects of teaching practice. Moreover, the SWIS (Strengths, Weaknesses, and Suggestions for Improvement in Teaching) framework was identified as a key advantage of journal reflection.

Abstract

Limited empirical research has examined how Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS)-based instructional modules can enhance inferential reading among Indonesian English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners in Islamic higher education. Addressing this gap, this quasi-experimental study evaluated the impact of a HOTS-based module grounded in Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy on students’ inferential reading skills and metacognitive strategies. A total of 57 EFL learners from an Islamic university in Indonesia participated (28 experimental, 29 control) over a six-week intervention. Inferential reading performance was measured using a validated multiple-choice reading comprehension test. Data were analyzed using paired and independent samples t-tests with effect size estimation. The experimental group demonstrated significant improvement (mean gain = 10.89 points; p = 0.000; Cohen’s d = 1.22), and a significant difference was found between groups (p = 0.008; Cohen’s d = 0.75), indicating a strong practical impact. This quasi-experiment provides evidence-based support for integrating HOTS-oriented instruction to foster 21st-century skills such as critical literacy and metacognitive awareness in Indonesian EFL contexts. The findings support the integration of HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skills) modules into teacher certification programs and EFL teacher training curricula within Islamic higher education institutions across Southeast Asia, contributing to the advancement of pedagogical practices and teacher professional development,
