Abstract

Adolescents are an age group vulnerable to various health problems, both physical and mental, along with the biological and psychosocial changes that occur during their developmental phase. Nutritional status and stress levels are two important aspects that play a role in determining adolescent well-being, however existing evidence regarding the relationship between these two variables remains inconsistent. This community service activity aims to describe the nutritional status and stress levels of adolescents and analyze the relationship between nutritional status and stress levels in adolescents in the school environment. The activity was carried out at SMKN 2 Lembar involving 21 adolescents aged 15–17 years using an observational analytical approach with a cross-sectional design. Data collection was carried out by filling out questionnaires on respondent characteristics and stress levels, as well as anthropometric measurements to determine nutritional status. Data were analyzed univariately and bivariately using the Fisher Exact test as an alternative. The results showed that most respondents were 16 years old (42.8%), had good nutritional status (90.5%), and experienced moderate stress (90.5%). The results of the bivariate analysis showed no significant relationship between nutritional status and stress levels in adolescents (p = 0.890). The conclusions of this activity indicate that stress levels in adolescents are not directly related to nutritional status but are likely more influenced by psychosocial factors. Therefore, community service programs in schools need to be implemented holistically, integrating nutrition education and mental health promotion to improve adolescent well-being.

Abstract

Stunting is a serious health problem among toddlers, characterized by delayed physical growth due to inadequate nutrition, a history of infectious diseases, low maternal education, and suboptimal parenting. In North Lombok Regency, the prevalence of stunting remained high at 19.3% in 2023. Efforts to address this issue have not only focused on nutritional interventions but also included complementary non-pharmacological therapies, such as melongas massage, which has been traditionally practiced using pucuk jarak and bedak langeh remedies. This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of these two remedies on the growth and development of stunted toddlers. A quasi-experimental nonequivalent control group design was applied, involving 72 stunted toddlers divided into three groups: pucuk jarak, bedak langeh, and control. The intervention was carried out for four weeks with melongas massage administered twice weekly. The measured parameters included body weight, height, appetite, sleep quality, and immune function. The results showed that the pucuk jarak group experienced more significant improvements across all parameters compared to the bedak langeh and control groups. Phytochemical tests supported these findings, showing total flavonoid levels of 53.32 mgQE/g in pucuk jarak compared to 3.58 mgQE/g in bedak langeh. The high flavonoid content is believed to play an important role in improving metabolism, appetite, growth, and immunity in toddlers. Thus, melongas massage using pucuk jarak has the potential to serve as a complementary strategy rooted in local wisdom for accelerating stunting reduction programs in North Lombok.

Abstract

Stunting is one of the chronic nutritional problems in toddlers that remains highly prevalent in Indonesia. Prevention efforts can be carried out through the innovation of functional foods based on nutrient-rich local ingredients. This study aimed to determine the effect of porang flour substitution on the hedonic quality, toddler panelists’ acceptance, and nutritional composition of anchovy rice and straw mushroom nuggets. The study used an experimental design with three formulas: P1 (60% anchovy rice, 25% straw mushroom, 20% porang flour), P2 (60% anchovy rice, 20% straw mushroom, 25% porang flour), and P3 (60% anchovy rice, 15% straw mushroom, 30% porang flour). Hedonic and hedonic quality tests were conducted on 25 toddler panelists, while proximate analysis included moisture, ash, fat, protein, crude fiber, and carbohydrate content. The results showed that P1 obtained the highest scores and was most preferred in terms of color, aroma, taste, and texture. Proximate analysis also showed that P1 had the highest protein content (6.81%) with 65.82% moisture, 1.56% fat, 2.33% ash, 0.95% crude fiber, and 23.47% carbohydrates. Meanwhile, the increased substitution of porang flour in P3 reduced sensory quality and protein levels, although it increased fiber and carbohydrates. Therefore, P1 can be considered the best formula because it achieved the highest acceptance and provided more suitable nutrients to support the improvement of toddlers’ nutritional status. This study highlights that the utilization of local food ingredients such as anchovy rice, straw mushrooms, and porang flour has the potential to serve as an innovative strategy for stunting prevention.

Abstract

Stunting is a condition of growth failure in toddlers, with the incidence rate in the North Lombok Regency reaching 19.3% in 2023. Although melongas, a traditional message technique widely practiced by the local community, is believed to support growth and development, there is currently no scientific evidence validating it in addressing stunting. The research aims to determine melongas massage’s effectiveness on stunted toddlers’ appetite and sleep quality. The research method uses a quantitative approach, a quasi-experimental with a nonequivalent control group design. The sampling technique uses saturated sampling. The research population consisted of 96 toddlers. Massage for toddlers using melongas method is carried out 2 times a week, lasting 10 to 15 minutes for 4 weeks. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The result revealed that most stunted toddlers who received massage therapy based on the melongas method experienced a significant improvement in appetite (47.91%) and sleep quality (75%). This study examines the relationship between massage therapy based on the melongas method and stunted toddlers’ appetite ( -value 0.021) and sleep quality ( -value 0.025). Toddler massage using the melongas method effectively increases stunted toddlers’ appetite and sleep quality.

Abstract

Early marriage still needs to be a concern due to the high incidence of cases and the impact it has on the health and nutritional status of toddlers. One of the long-term effects of early marriage is stunting, namely impaired growth and development in toddlers due to malnutrition. This study aims to explore the relationship between maternal age at marriage and nutrition knowledge levels with the nutritional status of toddlers. This research uses observational research with a cross-sectional design. The sample in this study was 48 mothers of toddlers with a history of early marriage. Data analysis used Spearman’s Rank test. The results showed that most of the mothers of toddlers married in their early adolescence (14 to 18 years), namely 29 people (60.4%). As many as 58.3% of toddlers have poor nutritional status, and 1.7% are in the good nutritional status category. The majority of mothers’ knowledge related to nutrition is lacking, as many as 24 (50%). There is a significant relationship between levels of a mother’s knowledge about nutrition and the nutritional status of toddlers with a p-value of 0.001. However, mothers who marry early need to increase their understanding of balanced nutrition in toddlers to prevent malnutrition. Future research needs to look at the nutritional status of toddlers based on the education level of mothers of toddlers who marry early, which may be one of the causes of malnutrition status in toddlers.
