Abstract

In the contemporary educational landscape, a significant portion of college students belongs to Generation Z, characterized by their familiarity with the Internet, mobile technology, and video games. Educators are increasingly turning to innovative solutions to address the challenge of fostering a meaningful learning environment that enhances student motivation and improves learning outcomes. Classcraft, as a notable example, offers a platform for educators to captivate students through gamified learning experiences and immersive role-playing. This study conducts a scoping review to investigate research findings about the effectiveness of Classcraft, specifically focusing on its gamification elements, within the realm of English instruction. The review encompasses articles published between 2018 and 2023, following the comprehensive five-stage framework outlined by Arksey and O’Malley (2005). The key revelation of this scoping review underscores the advantages of integrating Classcraft to establish an immersive gamified learning environment in the context of English instruction. The insights derived from this review hold particular significance for instructional designers operating in higher education settings.

Abstract

Gamification, integrating game elements in non-game environments, has garnered significant interest as an educational strategy. However, there is a need for more research focusing on its efficacy in learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL). This study aims to address this gap by exploring EFL students' learning experiences with gamification and synthesizing the factors that enhance language learning. In this study, four vocational school students and an EFL teacher participated in a classroom where gamification techniques were implemented for four consecutive weeks. To gather data, individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with the participants to gain insights into their perspectives. The data were then analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings of this study highlight the significant contributions of gamification in EFL learning by leading to better student engagement (behavioral, emotional, and cognitive), and providing immediate feedback and task level. Keywords: gamification, language learning, EFL, educational strategy,

Abstract

This survey study aimed to capture the actual student engagement in online learning, including the intensity of engagement, the barriers that prevent the students from engaging, and the efforts to stay engaged during online learning. It determined the students’ and English teachers’ perspectives to identify the differences in engagement variables among them. There were 424 participants consisting of students and English teachers from 2 Senior High Schools, 1 Vocational High School, and 2 Junior High Schools in South Sumatera, Indonesia. The online questionnaire was distributed through Google Forms and divided into three parts. The questionnaire items were adopted from Online Student Engagement Scale (OSE) to measure the intensity of engagement and Microsystem Factors Influence Student Engagement Scale to investigate the students’ barriers and efforts in engaging in online learning. Further, all the garnered data were computed through SPSS 25.0, facilitating an easier data presentation. The results of this study unveil the moderate intensity of student engagement in online learning, low barriers, and high efforts to stay engaged during online learning from both students and English teachers' perspectives.  Addition-ally, these results are expected to be used as the basis of reflection and evaluation of the online learning program in Indonesia

Abstract

Thinking-Aloud or Think-Aloud Protocols have been used to study thinking processes in varied fields such as psychology, business, sports, industry, and education. Recently, studies have tried to see its application in teaching in both offline and online modes. Despite its success, as demonstrated by these studies, controversies concerning the believability of thinking aloud and the process of reactivity have been raised. However, no explicit solution has been provided. In response to the issues, this paper critically reviewed examples of think-aloud protocols using Bowles’s guide to TAP (2008). The results show that (1) problems of the reactivity process stem from the nature of the tasks given, and (2) to minimize the problems of reactivity, the TAP data collection procedure should move from the least to the most intervention of the researcher.

Teachers' job satisfaction has been studied for decades. However, there has been no study investigating the profile of Indonesian EFL teachers' job satisfaction. This study aimed to find out the profile of Indonesian EFL teachers' job satisfaction. A sample of 340 EFL secondary school teachers consisting of 272 females and 68 males, 299 teachers with the undergraduate degree and 41 teachers with the master's degree, 34 teachers with  1-5 years of teaching, 60 teachers with 6-10 years of teaching, 53 teachers with 11-20 years of teaching, and 38 teachers with more than 21 years of teaching  were involved in this study. The instrument utilized in this study was an adaptation of the instrument developed by Spector (1994) comprising pay, promotion, supervision, fringe benefits, contingent rewards, operating conditions, coworkers, nature of work, and communication and distributed to the teachers via google forms due to the pandemic situation. The data were then analyzed using the confirmatory factor analysis.  The findings revealed that four factors emerged in the teacher job satisfaction model, that is, salary, supervision, service condition, and . colleagues. The item loading factors in this model ranged from 0.28 to 0.80 and the acceptable fit indices were χ2 = 88.82; df = 48; χ2/df = 1.49; TLI = 0.93, RMSEA = 0.05; SRMR = 0.04.

Abstract

This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of the Think-Pair-Share (TPS) technique in enhancing students' critical thinking skills and to explore students' perceptions of its application in speaking classes. Using a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design based on Kurt Lewin's model, the study followed the steps of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The research was conducted with 30 second-grade students (12 male and 18 female) from SMAN, Aceh, Indonesia, in the 2023/2024 academic year, selected through purposive sampling. Data collection methods included classroom observations, questionnaires, and student interviews, with the analysis carried out using descriptive and qualitative statistics. The findings indicated a significant improvement in students' critical thinking skills, as shown by the increase in performance from Cycle 1 (66.6%) to Cycle 2 (70%). Moreover, the results of the questionnaires demonstrated that students responded positively to the TPS technique. Therefore, the study concludes that the TPS technique effectively promotes critical thinking skills in speaking classes, offering cognitive and engagement benefits.

Abstract

This study aims to address the need to promote the integration of Pancasila student profile values—specifically independence, critical thinking, and creativity—into listening-speaking supplementary materials for grade VII students at a state junior high school in Kolaka Utara. By understanding the target needs and learning needs, this research seeks to develop listening-speaking supplementary materials that are appropriate for promoting both English language proficiency and Pancasila values. This research employs a research and development (R&D) approach in education, utilizing the well-known ADDIE development model. Data collection methods included qualitative interviews and document analysis, as well as quantitative questionnaires. The needs analysis results indicated that students required materials for learning descriptive text in oral form but faced challenges with word pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary expansion, and understanding spoken information. Consequently, students desired materials that improved their vocabulary and pronunciation with an emphasis on multimedia elements. The listening-speaking supplementary materials integrated the values in implicitly and explicitly. These materials consisted of six units following a genre-based approach and used authentic materials with technology integration. The appropriateness of these materials was demonstrated through positive feedback from students and teachers, who found them engaging, well-aligned with learning objectives, relevant, and sufficient in exercises and tasks. Expert judgment rated the materials with a mean score of 3.9, categorized as “very appropriate” within the range of 3.26 < x ≤ 4.00. Furthermore, this research contributed to developing educational resources, and it is expected that students can engage with good value in their future lives.
