Abstract

Abstract

Background: Plaque can inhibit the antibacterial activity of salivary function, which can damage the periodontal tissue. Several preventive measures can be done to control plaque, mechanically or chemically. Mechanical plaque control in combination with chemical plaqie control such as toothpaste can reduce plaque. The role of SLS in toothpaste which can facilitate plaque detachment from the tooth surface. Herbal toothpaste has been developed using herbal ingredients that have antibacterial properties as black cumin (Nigella sativa). The contents of black cumin, thymoquinone, thymol, and tannins, have been proven to be effective in inhibiting the growth of plaque bacteria. Purpose: This study aims to identify the inhibitory ability of black cumin toothpaste extract containing detergent compared to black cumin extract toothpaste without detergent on the growth of supragingival plaque bacteria. Methods: This research method of diffusion of wells on BHIB media was conducted in four research groups namely negative control, cumin paste with SLS, non SLS cumin paste, and SLS and carried out bacterial planting on MHA media. Next measure the diameter of the inhibition zone around the well. Results: There was a significant difference in each group against the inhibitory growth of supragingival plaque bacteria on the Oneway ANOVA test results (p <0.05) Conclusion: Black cumin extract toothpaste containing 2% of detergent has better inhibition against supragingival plaque bacteria than non cumin detergent 3% black cumin toothpaste.

Abstract

Toothbrushing skills in preschool children are crucial for dental health. However, children often struggle to apply the correct techniques. A preliminary study conducted on 5-6-year-old children at Raden Paku Kindergarten in Surabaya revealed that most of them had inadequate skills in performing toothbrushing movements. Educational media serve as an effective tool for conveying messages to enhance toothbrushing skills. Efforts to improve these skills can be implemented using the TURBODENT (Try Using Box Dental) media. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the Try Using Box Dental media on the toothbrushing skills of 5-6-year-old children at Raden Paku Kindergarten in Surabaya. This research employs a quasi-experimental method with a pretest-posttest control group design. The study sample consists of 40 children aged 5-6 years, divided into two groups: the intervention group and the control group. Data collection instruments include an observation checklist for toothbrushing skills. Data analysis techniques involve the Wilcoxon test and the Mann-Whitney test. Results: the Wilcoxon test for the intervention group shows a p-value of 0.000, while the control group has a p-value of 1.000. The Mann-Whitney test results in a p-value of 0.000 or < 0.05. The study concludes that the Try Using Box Dental media is effective in enhancing the toothbrushing skills of 5-6-year-old children at Raden Paku Kindergarten in Surabaya.

Abstract

Down syndrome children are mentally retarded and most of them have poor oral health and are unable to carry out dental hygiene independently due to cognitive and motor limitations. It was found that 83% of dental hygiene (debris index) was in the moderate category in children with Down syndrome. Efforts to improve dental hygiene can be done by using a modified toothbrush. The aim of the research is to determine the difference in the effectiveness of using a conventional toothbrush and a modified toothbrush with a handle (SIGIGA) in reducing the debris index in children with Down syndrome. This type of research is quasi-experimental. The sample size was 30 respondents from children with Down syndrome who were selected using a total sampling technique. The data collection instrument used was the debris index examination sheet. The data analysis techniques used are the Wilcoxon test and the Mann-Whitney test. The results of the Wilcoxon test to see the difference in plaque scores before and after treatment obtained significant results ρ (0.001) < 0.05 in the conventional toothbrush group and the modified handled toothbrush group. The results of the Mann-Whitney test showed ρ (0.000) < 0.05. This value shows that H0 is rejected, so there is a difference in the effectiveness of using a conventional toothbrush and a modified toothbrush with a handle (SIGIGA) in reducing the debris index in children with Down syndrome. Conclusions from the research : There is a difference in the effectiveness of using a conventional toothbrush and a modified toothbrush with a handle (SIGIGA) in reducing the debris index in children with Down syndrome.

Abstract

Blind children are children with special needs who have abnormalities in the sense of vision that require services, both in terms of education and health specifically. WHO defines as visual acuity in healthy eyes less than 10/200 or visual field less than 10 degrees of fixation. There was a high percentage of oral hygiene in the poor category in blind students aged 12-18 years at SMPLB and SMALB A YPAB Surabaya. The purpose of this study was to determine the effectiveness of using B-FRESH (Blind-Friendly Efficient Smart Hygiene) media on oral hygiene in blind students. This research is an applied research experiment involving 28 samples. The data collection instrument used was a plaque index assessment sheet and a tooth brushing checklist sheet. The data analysis technique used is the Mann-Whitney test. Based on the Mann-Whitney test, the results obtained P (0.001) <0.05. This value indicates H0 is rejected, so there is an effectiveness of using B-FRESH (Blind-Friendly Efficient Smart Hygiene) media on oral hygiene in blind students. The conclusion of the study is that there is an improvement in oral hygiene after being given B-FRESH (Blind-Friendly Efficient Smart Hygiene) media to blind students, namely from poor to moderate. This study has implications for the importance of tooth brushing practices in maintaining oral hygiene in blind students to improve the oral
