Abstract

Community-based waste management in the PT. Bukit Asam Township, Tanjung Enim, is essential. This study involved 67 respondents residing in the Township. A mixed-method approach was used, including interviews, observations, and SWOT analysis. The results indicate that residents are actively engaged in waste containment, with most households (85%) disposing of all waste without sorting. Only a small percentage reuse items (5%) and compost (2%). The average waste generated per socioeconomic group exceeds the standards set by SNI 3242-2008. Community-based waste management at PT. Bukit Asam has the potential for success due to active participation and company support. The SWOT analysis reveals strengths in participation, company support, education, and a structured system but weaknesses in dependence on participation and funding, and limitations in human resources and infrastructure. Opportunities include government support, new technologies, and collaboration with NGOs, while threats arise from policy changes, social issues, regulations, environmental impacts, and disasters. Improvement strategies include initial assessments, stakeholder mapping, awareness enhancement, facility provision, supervision, monitoring, incentives, periodic evaluations, and continuous innovation. With these strategies, the program is expected to be effective and sustainable, address waste issues, create new economic opportunities, and serve as a model for other communities.

Abstract

Fish and some groups of shrimps and crabs are one of the economically important biota that live in the waters. Accumulation of heavy metals in fish can affect the economic value of marine fishery products. There are several types of fish that contain heavy metals and are harmful when consumed by humans. The purpose of this study was to determine the dominant bycatch fish species and the accumulation of heavy metals Pb and Cu in the bycatch of stationary lift net Pesisir Banyuasin. This study was conducted in November 2019 and the dominant bycatch included japuh fish (Dussumieria acuta), tembang fish (Sardinella fimbriata) and parang-parang fish (Chirocentrus dorab). Samples were taken from one stationary lift net then analysed using SSA (Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry) with 3 repetitions. The results of the analysis found the average concentration of heavy metals Pb and Cu in japuh fish was 0.65 mg/kg Pb; 0.16 mg/kg Cu. In tembang fish 0.70 mg/kg Pb and 0.03 mg/kg Cu. The parang-parang fish was 0.50 mg/kg and 0.17 mg/kg Cu. Based on the quality standards of SNI, Directorate General of Food and Drug Administration and FAO, the Pb and Cu concentrations of the three types of by-catch fish are still below the quality standard threshold and safe for human consumption.

Abstract

Abstract

The Mojo Village mangrove forest in Pemalang has undergone environmental degradation due to land conversion into shrimp farming areas. This conversion has led to increased anthropogenic activities, which are potential sources of heavy metal contamination in the waters, particularly lead (Pb). This study aimed to analyse Pb concentrations in sediments and gastropods and assess the potential of gastropods as bioindicators of Pb pollution. Sample preparation followed the USEPA 3051 method, and Pb analysis was conducted using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS). The results identified five gastropod species: Littoraria melanostoma, Littoraria scabra, Cerithidea cingulata, Cerithidea obtusa, and Cerithidea decollata. Pb concentrations in sediments averaged 11.86 ± 1.24 mg/kg, while in gastropods, the average was 0.43 ± 0.16 mg/kg. Although Pb levels in sediments indicate low contamination and no pollution, they may still pose potential biological risks. Cerithidea cingulata and Cerithidea obtusa were categorized as deco-concentrators with the potential to serve as bioindicators of Pb pollution. The study also revealed a very strong correlation between Pb concentrations in sediments and gastropods.

Abstract

Understanding the diversity, function, and ecological dynamics of bacterial communities depends on unique transitional environments, estuaries. Knowledge on bacterial taxa in the Musi River estuary, South Sumatra still eludes, however. This effort aims to identify bacterial species in estuary waters using metagenomic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene. Surface water samples from three study locations were analysed by DNA isolation, nanodrop spectrophotometer qualitative assessment, 16S rRNA gene amplification, electrophoresis, and Illumina NovaSeq sequencing. Results showed that Proteobacteria predominated at all sites, followed by Campilobacterota, Cyanobacteria, and Bacteroidota. At the class level, Gammaproteobacteria was most common, followed by Alphaproteobacteria and Campylobacteria. Dominant bacterial orders were Campylobacterales, Rhodobacterales, and Pseudomonadales while the most common families were Arcobacteraceae, Rhodobacteraceae, and Pseudomonadaceae. The most plentiful genera were Rheinheimera, Pseudomonas, and Pseudarcobacter. Variations in bacterial spread among stations suggest environmental factors including salinity, nutrient availability, and human activities influencing microbial community composition. Ternary plots, heat maps, and krona diagrams were employed to disclose distinct patterns of bacterial community dispersion in the estuary. This paper underscores the importance of metagenomic research in illuminating microbial diversity in estuarine environments and its impact on ecological dynamics and water quality.
