Abstract

Purpose of the Study: This study explores the implementation of differentiated instruction in teaching Bahasa Indonesia to foreign speakers, focusing on how adaptive teaching strategies address linguistic and cultural barriers while enhancing learners' communicative competence. Differentiated instruction allows educators to modify content, processes, and assessments based on students’ varying proficiency levels, learning preferences, and cultural contexts creating an inclusive and engaging language-learning environment. Methodology: A qualitative case study approach was employed to provide an in-depth understanding of instructional practices. The participants were 20 foreign students (8 males and 12 females) from diverse countries enrolled in a Bahasa Indonesia course at the State University of Surabaya. Data were gathered through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis. Thematic analysis was applied to identify patterns in instructional adaptation, learner engagement, and classroom implementation challenges. Main Findings: The results demonstrated that differentiated instruction significantly improved students’ language acquisition, participation, and motivation. Learners benefited from varied learning activities, technology-enhanced tools, and flexible assessment approaches that accommodated different linguistic abilities and cultural backgrounds. Nevertheless, the study identified challenges in lesson preparation time and teachers’ capacity to maintain instructional consistency. Novelty/Originality of this Study: This research offers one of the first comprehensive examinations of differentiated instruction in the context of Bahasa Indonesia as a foreign language. It offers a culturally responsive pedagogical model that bridges linguistic diversity with inclusive education principles, providing theoretical and practical guidance for educators seeking to enhance equitable, learner-centered language teaching practices in multicultural classrooms.

Abstract

The growing demand for advanced literacy skills requires reading instruction at the junior high school level to move beyond surface comprehension toward integrative, analytical, and reflective reading practices. However, Indonesian language instruction remains largely dependent on conventional teaching materials that do not systematically integrate extensive and intensive reading strategies. This study aimed to develop Indonesian language teaching materials based on the Integrative Extensive–Intensive Reading (MIME) model to enhance students’ reading comprehension and text analysis skills. This research employed a R&D approach. Data were collected through classroom observations, interviews, document analysis, expert validation sheets, student response questionnaires, and reading comprehension tests. The study involved Indonesian language teachers and students at Malang, East Java, with 30 students participating in the limited field trial. The developed materials were evaluated by subject matter experts, instructional design experts, and graphic design experts before being implemented in an experimental class and compared with a control class to examine their effectiveness. The validation results indicated that the developed teaching materials achieved a very high level of validity. Effectiveness testing revealed a statistically significant difference between the experimental and control groups (p = 0.003 < 0.05). These findings demonstrate that the MIME-based teaching materials are valid, practical, and effective in improving students’ reading comprehension, text analysis skills, and learning engagement. Practically, the developed teaching materials can serve as an alternative instructional resource for Indonesian language teachers to implement integrative reading instruction and strengthen students’ higher-order literacy skills at the junior high school level.

Abstract

Abstract

This community service program was motivated by the low skills and income levels of housewives in Magetan Regency, despite the region’s rich natural resources. The purpose of this activity was to enhance creativity and economic independence among housewives through environmentally friendly batik ecoprint training. The implementation methods included preparation, socialization, theoretical and practical training, mentoring, and evaluation. Participants were trained to use leaves and flowers as natural dyes in the batik-making process, accompanied by entrepreneurship and product marketing sessions. The results showed a significant improvement in participants’ knowledge, skills, and motivation to develop independent ecoprint-based businesses. In conclusion, the training successfully increased creativity, fostered entrepreneurial spirit, and contributed to family income growth and the development of the local creative economy.
