Abstract

Mathematical critical thinking skills are a crucial higher-order thinking competency for students, yet various findings indicate that this ability remains relatively low, largely due to teacher-centered learning that gives students little opportunity to explore ideas and develop their own reasoning. Beyond instructional factors, self-efficacy also influences students' ability to handle complex mathematical problems, making the combination of an appropriate learning approach and self-confidence an aspect that warrants deeper investigation. This study aims to analyze differences in mathematical critical thinking skills between students taught using the Scientific Approach and those taught through direct instruction, as well as to examine the influence of self-efficacy levels on this ability at MTsS PP Nurul Jadid Kampar. This study used a quasi-experimental method with a non-equivalent control group design and a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through a mathematical critical thinking test, a self-efficacy questionnaire, observation, and documentation, then analyzed using a t-test and two-way ANOVA. The results showed a significant difference in mathematical critical thinking skills between students taught with the Scientific Approach and those taught through direct instruction, as well as significant differences based on self-efficacy levels, but no significant interaction was found between them. It can be concluded that the Scientific Approach has a positive influence on students' mathematical critical thinking skills when their self-efficacy levels are taken into account.

Abstract

This research proposed and verified a novel method in realizing end-fire radial line slot array (RLSA) antennas. This method involved the use of high beamsquint values in the design of slot pairs, which aimed to shift the antenna’s beam toward the end-fire direction. Furthermore, identical slot pairs were also placed in the antenna’s background to further squint the beam in the end-fire direction. By using this method, forty multibeam end-fire RLSA antennas were modeled and simulated to determine the most efficient model to be fabricated. The accuracy of the simulations was confirmed through measurements taken from the fabricated prototype, which demonstrate good agreement with the simulation results and confirm the validity of the proposed method. The result showed that it is possible to design four end-fire beam antennas with a gain of 8 dBi, directions of 0°, 90°, 180°, and 270° in the azimuth direction, and a beamwidth of about 20°. The antenna also showed low reflection and bandwidth of about 500 MHz, which is suitable for Wi-Fi applications.

Abstract

The Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) model is considered one of the approaches capable of integrating and simultaneously improving mathematical problem-solving abilities (KPMM). KPMM itself has a positive and significant relationship with self-concept. This research is an experiment with a factorial design. The purpose of experimental research is to determine whether or not there is an effect from the variables selected in the study. The study population includes all eighth-grade students at SMPN 40 Pekanbaru. The sample was selected using the cluster random sampling technique, resulting in class VIII A being chosen as the experimental class and class VIII B as the control class. Data collection was done thru tests, questionnaires, and observation. Data analysis was performed using a two-way ANOVA test. The research results indicate no difference in mathematical problem-solving ability (KPMM) between students who followed CTL model learning and direct instruction. However, there was a significant difference in KPMM between students with high, medium, and low self-concepts. Additionally, no interaction was found between the CTL learning model and self-concept on students' KPMM. One factor suspected of causing the lack of significant influence of the CTL model on KPMM is students' time management in solving KPMM problems, a lack of practice in solving problem-solving questions, and students' low accuracy in creating mathematical models.
