Abstract

Background:  Increasing age causes an increase in blood pressure in the elderly which results in the emergence of various infectious to degenrative diseases, one of which is hypertension. Hypertension is an increase in systolic blood pressure exceeding 140 mmhg and diastolic 90 mmhg. One of the efforts in handling hypertension is with non-pharmacological therapies such as slow deep breathing exercises that play a role in stimulating the work of parasympathetic nerves and inhibiting sympathetic nerves to lower blood pressure in hypertensive elderly. Purpose: To determine the effect of slow deep breathing on lowering blood pressure in elderly with hypertension. Method: Systematic review approach by analyzing selected literature from various sources. Article searches were conducted through online databases, namely ProQuest, ScienceDirect and Goggle Scholar. The results of the article selection obtained 8 articles  that met the criteria and were analyzed and critiqued using the JBI instrument ... Quality assessment is based on the PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyzes) checklist. Results: Slow deep breathing is a nonpharmacological therapy that is proven to be able to reduce blood pressure in elderly people with hypertension. Conclusion: The role of slow deep breathing (SDB) is proven to be effective in helping reduce blood pressure in the elderly with hypertension.

Abstract

Background: The number of older adults with dementia in Indonesia continues to increase. However, many family caregivers still have limited knowledge and skills, leading to adverse effects on both the older adults and the caregivers themselves. Existing interventions mainly focus on single aspects of care and have not adequately addressed the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual dimensions. Therefore, there is a need for a comprehensive intervention model that holistically meets caregivers’ needs.Purpose: This study aimed to develop a home-based holistic dementia nursing intervention model for family caregivers and identify its key features. Methods: Three approaches were used for model development: (1) literature review, (2) in-depth interviews, and (3) expert validation. Five articles addressing holistic care dimensions and nursing interventions were included in the review. Fifteen participants took part in the in-depth interviews, while expert validation involved three specialists in the geriatric field with specific qualifications. Data were collected between August and September 2022. Analysis was conducted by comparing and synthesizing the findings from the literature review, interviews, and expert validation. Results: The holistic dementia nursing intervention model for family caregivers consisted of four intervention domains: (1) physical, (2) psychological, (3) social, and (4) spiritual. The model also incorporated three key components: (1) communication processes, (2) organizational processes, and (3) belief systems. Conclusion: The home-based holistic dementia nursing intervention model for family caregivers offers a potential conceptual framework to comprehensively address the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs of both older adults and their caregivers.

Abstract

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are conditions that lower productivity, cause discomfort in the form of decreased range of motion or chronic pain and impair function. These can be made worse by the workplace and its surroundings, and they impact the muscles, bones, nerves, tendons, ligaments, joints, cartilage, and intervertebral discs. Exercise therapy is one non-pharmacological intervention that might be helpful in reducing pain complaints related to MSDs. This study aimed to review the literature regarding the efficacy of exercise therapy in mitigating pain associated with musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) in cleaning workers. A systematic review was the methodology employed. Searches for articles published between 2013 and 2023 were conducted using Google Scholar, PubMed, ProQuest, and Science Direct. Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) approach, the search strategy was conducted. Five of the articles were eligible for inclusion. Four studies employed a quasi-experimental design, and one study used an RCT design. Exercise therapy, which includes aerobic, motor control, functional, ergonomic, and foam roller exercises, was found to be beneficial in lowering musculoskeletal pain in cleaning workers across all studies. This evidence suggests that exercise therapy can be used as a nursing intervention to reduce musculoskeletal pain in cleaning workers.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The increasing elderly population in Indonesia poses significant challenges for families acting as caregivers responsible for providing optimal care. Caregivers often experience physical, mental, and emotional stress, commonly referred to as caregiver burden. Mindfulness therapy has emerged as an effective approach to reducing stress by transforming negative thought patterns. Objective: This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of mindfulness interventions in reducing caregiver burden and enhancing the health and well-being of caregivers for elderly family members through a systematic review. Method: A systematic review was conducted using the PRISMA approach. Data were collected from three databases: PubMed, EBSCOHost, and Scopus, with inclusion criteria focusing on research articles evaluating the effectiveness of mindfulness for caregivers of the elderly, published between 2019–2024. Five studies with a Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) design were thoroughly analyzed using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP). Results: The findings revealed that mindfulness interventions significantly reduced stress levels, depressive symptoms, and anxiety among caregivers. Additionally, improvements in sleep quality and emotional well-being were noted in some studies. While the effect on reducing caregiver burden was inconsistent, most studies demonstrated significant enhancements in mental health and overall well-being. Conclusion: Mindfulness-based interventions have proven effective in supporting the physical and mental health of caregivers for the elderly.

Abstract

Elderly patients face various surgical risks, including complications, slower recovery, prolonged hospital stays, functional decline, and even death. Early ambulation is beneficial in reducing these risks in older adults. However, elderly patients often lack motivation to ambulate due to insufficient understanding and family support, leading to longer bed rest. Aim : To evaluate the impact of early ambulation as an intervention to enhance postoperative recovery in elderly patients. Methods: This is a systematic review study with a PICO approach. Article searches were conducted using online databases such as EBSCO, PubMed, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, and Scopus with the keywords (Elderly OR Older Adult) AND (Post Operative OR Post Surgery) AND (Early Ambulation OR Early Mobilization) AND (Reduce Length of Stay) published between 2014–2024 and The 5 relevant articles were found. Results: Five studies indicated that the implementation of early ambulation programs in elderly surgical patients not only reduces length of stay but also improves functional capacity and decreases the incidence of complications such as pneumonia, atelectasis, and venous thrombosis. Conclusion: The studies show that early mobilization reduces hospital stays, accelerates organ function recovery, and provides psychological benefits, such as reduced postoperative anxiety.
