Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The tradition of grave visitation (ziarah kubur) has long been an integral part of the religious culture of Indonesian Muslims. Islam views this practice as a recommended (sunnah) act to remind believers of death; however, in practice, deviations often occur that potentially undermine the principle of tawhid. These deviations include acts such as seeking blessings, believing in the mystical power of saints’ or scholars’ graves, and performing khurafat rituals. This research aims to describe the practice of ziarah kubur in Indonesia, identify elements that deviate from the principle of tawhid, and offer theological solutions based on Islamic monotheism. Using a qualitative approach and literary. Review method, the research analyzes classical and contemporary Islamic literature. The findings show that deviant practices, such as making requests to the deceased and offering ritual sacrifices, fall under the categories of shirk jali (overt polytheism) and shirk khafi (hidden polytheism), both of which contradict the core tenets of tawhid. These deviations not only affect individual faith but also contribute to the formation of a misguided religious culture in society. Therefore, an educational approach through dakwah (Islamic preaching) is needed, involving both religious and cultural leaders, to ensure that ziarah is carried out wisely—retaining its spiritual value without violating Islamic creed. The limitation of this study lies in its theoretical nature, as it does not include empirical fieldwork. The implication of this research suggests the need for collaboration between religious education and cultural preservation to maintain the practice of ziarah in line with Islamic teachings and guidance

Abstract

Political theology is an academic approach that explores the relationship between theological thought religious views on God, humanity, and life and the political, social, and economic order. This field of study goes beyond the direct involvement of religion in politics, examining how divine values shape understandings of power, justice, and community life. This article specifically discusses the definition and scope of political theology in the Indonesian context—a nation that integrates religious principles with the national ideology of Pancasila. In Indonesia’s religiously and culturally plural society, political theology has emerged as a dynamic field of dialogue between religious teachings, democratic governance, and contemporary social realities. The article outlines how political theology can serve as both a reflective and critical tool for analyzing public policy, power distribution, and political morality. By elaborating on the core concepts of political theology and linking them to Indonesia’s sociopolitical landscape, this article aims to broaden the academic understanding of religion’s role in public life in a pluralistic nation.

Abstract

Abstract

Harun Nasution’s theological thought represents a significant effort to revive the role of reason as a central element in understanding Islamic teachings. In the context of Islamic thought in Indonesia, which has long been dominated by traditional and textual approaches, Harun Nasution reintroduced a rational perspective rooted in the Mu‘tazilite theological legacy. Through his academic education at Al-Azhar University and McGill University, he developed a theological framework that emphasized intellectual freedom, rationality, and the historical relevance of Islam in facing modern challenges. This study aims to explain how the integration of reason into Islamic studies was realized through Nasution’s rational theological approach, using a library research method with historical and thematic approaches. The analysis focuses on the historical development of rational kalam, the position of reason within theological methodology, and the impact of his thought on the reform of modern Islamic education. The findings show that Harun Nasution’s rational approach not only shaped a new paradigm in theological studies but also opened space for dialogue between Islam and contemporary intellectual discourse. His ideas make a significant contribution to building a more contextual, critical, and open understanding of Islam in response to the advancement of knowledge and social change.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the phenomenon of language transfer, both positive and negative, on English pronunciation of native Sundanese speakers in Braga Street, Bandung. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through interviews and controlled speech tasks involving 17 participants. The analysis focused on identifying the types, causes, and impacts of language transfer on pronunciation. The findings reveal three forms of negative transfer: substitution, omission, and addition of sounds. Meanwhile, positive transfer is categorized based on similarities in consonants, vowels, and loanwords. Negative transfer patterns generally arise due to phonological differences between Sundanese as the first language (L1) and English as the second language (L2). On the other hand, positive transfer was found to support more accurate pronunciation. These findings offer valuable insights for developing English teaching strategies that strategically address phonological similarities and differences between L1 and L2. Furthermore, this study highlights the importance for tourism practitioners to prioritize effective English communication in order to enhance cross-cultural interactions with international visitors.

Abstract

This study investigates the phenomena of English–Indonesian code mixing in Jesselyn Lauwreen's short-form video material, specifically in her Gourmet With Jess TikTok series. Lauwreen is the winner of MasterChef Indonesia Season 8. The research distinguishes and classifies three linguistic forms—intra-sentential code mixing, intra-lexical code mixing, and code mixing involving pronunciation change—based on Charlotte Hoffman's (1991) typology of code mixing. In order to investigate how English cooking terminology is incorporated into Indonesian narratives, 10 TikTok videos were examined using a qualitative descriptive technique. The results show that the most common technique is intra-sentential code mixing, in which English phrases like "Now aku bakal steam" or "Chinese stir fry beef dengan sayur-sayuran" are included into Indonesian sentence structures to promote conceptual clarity and linguistic flexibility. Additionally common is intra-lexical code mixing, which is demonstrated by hybrid constructions such as "di-marinate," "garnish-nya," and "shred gitu," which show Jesselyn's adaptive linguistic innovation by fusing local grammar conventions with international culinary language. The least common type of code mixing was a change in pronunciation, but it was noticeable in cases like "chicken stock," which is pronounced using Indonesian phonology. This indicates localized accessibility without compromising professional authority. The study emphasizes that code mixing on TikTok is a purposeful decision influenced by audience expectations, platform affordances, and the creation of culinary identities rather than just being a linguistic need. In addition to providing insights into how multilingual influencers use language to negotiate cultural capital, relatability, and expertise in Indonesia's developing digital culinary realm, these findings validate the usefulness of Hoffman's methodology in evaluating multimodal digital discourse.
