Abstract

ABSTRACT: After being left by Girilaya in 1662, the situation of Cirebon was not condusive. His generation, the Prince of Wangsakerta, was in the difficult situation because he was the prisoner of Trunojoyo in Kediri. Then, he asked for help to Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa of Banten to freed and protect him. Afterward, Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa inaugurated the Princes of Cirebon, namely: Syamsuddin Martawijaya as “Sultan Sepuh” or Old Sultan; Badrudin Kartawijaya as “Sultan Anom” or Young Sultan; and Pangeran Wangsakerta as “Panembahan” or Prime Minister of Carbon. After being together in Cirebon, there was quarrel though there was no civil war among them. The internal conflict of the Cirebon palace family gave chance to outside, which was VOC (Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie or Dutch East India Company) to do intervention. Finally, the VOC bound Sultans of Cirebon by variety of contracts (engagement) under the cloak to make a peace either to get commercial monopoly. Since 1681, the authority of Cirebon Sultans had experienced degeneration as the impact of change had brought Dutch colonialism. Althought, the title of Sultan was still carried, the authority had been disappeared. Every decision considered important things, including the change of Sultan had to get agreement from Governor-General in Batavia or Jakarta now. At 1809, H.W. Daendels organized government reorganization by issuing ”Reglement van Bestuur voor de Cheribonsche Landen” that ended the political authority of Cirebon Sultans. Abstract

The presence of cohesive devices in speech plays a crucial role in representing the functioning of language. Beyond enhancing the effectiveness of written communication, cohesive devices guide listeners into the realm of context, fostering a shared understanding of meaning. This research focuses on analyzing grammatical and lexical cohesions in Donald Trump's inauguration speech from the 2016 United States presidential election, which took place on January 20th, 2017. The objective of the study is to explore the representation of both grammatical and lexical cohesions. A qualitative method was employed, and data were extracted from pauses in Trump's speech, specifically noting cohesive devices. The findings reveal that grammatical cohesion encompasses references, substitutions, ellipsis, and conjunctions. Lexical cohesions identified include repetition, synonymy, antonymy, hyponymy, meronymy, and collocation. Repetition was observed in 29 pauses, substitutions in 6 pauses, ellipsis in 8 pauses, and conjunctions in 31 pauses. Regarding lexical cohesion, the study identified repetition in 32 pauses, synonymy in 10 pauses, antonymy in 5 pauses, hyponymy in 3 pauses, meronymy in 2 pauses, and collocation in 6 pauses. However, it was noted that incohesive instances occurred in the case of conjunctions, potentially influenced by the situational or contextual factors. In conclusion, this study sheds light on the diverse cohesive devices employed in Trump's inauguration speech, emphasizing the significance of context in understanding language use.  Keywords: cohesive device, conjunctions, ellipsis, grammatical cohesion, lexical cohesion, substitutions

Abstract

This study suggests using positive politeness strategies, as seen through the speech of BTS Kim Namjoon. It also seeks to identify Asian cultural habits in communication-based on Namjoon's Asian background. This research also uses a descriptive qualitative approach based on the transcript of the YouTube video. Based on this research, it can be seen that Brown and Levinson's (1987) theory is used as the leading theory of the analysis. The supporting theory of this research comes from Samovar et al. (2013), who suggest the habits of Asians when communicating. This research shows that BTS Kim Namjoon often uses positive politeness in the strategies of "exaggeration" and "include both S and H in the activity."  This research consist spositive politeness strategies used by BTS’ Kim Namjoon to uphold the social relationship and maintain the social interactions between the individuals.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the phenomenon of language transfer, both positive and negative, on English pronunciation of native Sundanese speakers in Braga Street, Bandung. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through interviews and controlled speech tasks involving 17 participants. The analysis focused on identifying the types, causes, and impacts of language transfer on pronunciation. The findings reveal three forms of negative transfer: substitution, omission, and addition of sounds. Meanwhile, positive transfer is categorized based on similarities in consonants, vowels, and loanwords. Negative transfer patterns generally arise due to phonological differences between Sundanese as the first language (L1) and English as the second language (L2). On the other hand, positive transfer was found to support more accurate pronunciation. These findings offer valuable insights for developing English teaching strategies that strategically address phonological similarities and differences between L1 and L2. Furthermore, this study highlights the importance for tourism practitioners to prioritize effective English communication in order to enhance cross-cultural interactions with international visitors.

Abstract

This study investigates the phenomena of English–Indonesian code mixing in Jesselyn Lauwreen's short-form video material, specifically in her Gourmet With Jess TikTok series. Lauwreen is the winner of MasterChef Indonesia Season 8. The research distinguishes and classifies three linguistic forms—intra-sentential code mixing, intra-lexical code mixing, and code mixing involving pronunciation change—based on Charlotte Hoffman's (1991) typology of code mixing. In order to investigate how English cooking terminology is incorporated into Indonesian narratives, 10 TikTok videos were examined using a qualitative descriptive technique. The results show that the most common technique is intra-sentential code mixing, in which English phrases like "Now aku bakal steam" or "Chinese stir fry beef dengan sayur-sayuran" are included into Indonesian sentence structures to promote conceptual clarity and linguistic flexibility. Additionally common is intra-lexical code mixing, which is demonstrated by hybrid constructions such as "di-marinate," "garnish-nya," and "shred gitu," which show Jesselyn's adaptive linguistic innovation by fusing local grammar conventions with international culinary language. The least common type of code mixing was a change in pronunciation, but it was noticeable in cases like "chicken stock," which is pronounced using Indonesian phonology. This indicates localized accessibility without compromising professional authority. The study emphasizes that code mixing on TikTok is a purposeful decision influenced by audience expectations, platform affordances, and the creation of culinary identities rather than just being a linguistic need. In addition to providing insights into how multilingual influencers use language to negotiate cultural capital, relatability, and expertise in Indonesia's developing digital culinary realm, these findings validate the usefulness of Hoffman's methodology in evaluating multimodal digital discourse.

Abstract
