Abstract

Evaluation of thermal comfort in the 1st and 2nd-floor reading rooms of Pekalongan City Public Library is to support the aim of designing a comfortable reading room that can increase people's reading interest. This study uses a quantitative approach defined descriptively and evaluatively. Direct measurement data in the morning and afternoon using a thermometer, hygrometer, and anemometer for four days. Data also uses a questionnaire. The collected data compares the measurement analysis results with recommended standards. The result shows that the reading room on the 1st floor was in the threshold and heat-comfort category, which was around 26℃ - 27.4 ℃, while the reading room on the 2nd floor was in the optimal comfortable category, which was around 24.7℃ - 26.4℃. The effective temperature of the 1st-floor reading room is higher than the 2nd floor. The final result shows that the room is in the less comfortable category because the air conditioner in the reading room is not as it should be appropriate.

Abstract

The spatial planning of traditional Balinese villages embodies a profound cultural and religious philosophy, ensuring a balance between sacred spaces, residential areas, and public domains. This study investigates the implementation of the Ulu Teben concept within the spatial structure of traditional villages in Blahbatuh, Bali, and its adaptation to modernization and economic shifts. The primary objective is to assess the extent to which Ulu Teben principles have been maintained and to identify key factors driving spatial transformations. A qualitative approach with a case study method is employed, integrating field observations, in-depth interviews with customary leaders and local communities, and document analysis. The research utilizes thematic and spatial analysis, supported by Geographic Information System (GIS)-based mapping to track spatial alterations. Findings indicate that while Ulu Teben remains a foundational principle in traditional village spatial planning, various adaptations have emerged due to population growth, economic pressures, and the expansion of the tourism sector. These changes have led to shifts in land use, including the conversion of sacred zones into residential and commercial areas. The degree of adaptation varies across different traditional villages, demonstrating flexibility in the application of traditional spatial structures. This study concludes that safeguarding traditional spatial planning necessitates a balanced strategy that integrates indigenous wisdom with modern urban planning policies. Strengthening customary regulations, leveraging digital mapping technologies, and promoting active community involvement are crucial measures in preserving the integrity of the Ulu Teben concept amid modernization challenges.

Abstract

Along with the development of the times, traditional markets continue to exist today. Johar Market is a traditional market that is still a traditional shopping center in the city of Semarang. The revitalization process at Johar Market in 2015 made Johar Market a new market that complies with SNI standards. The revitalization was carried out as an effort by the government to restore the cultural heritage building after it burned down. The restoration of the form and design of Johar Market, which was first inaugurated in 1839, was done in order to restore the essence of the cultural heritage building. The restoration of the form of Johar Market caused changes in the spatial trading space and the behavior of traders in order to adapt to the new form. This study aims to identify the optimization of trading space within the Johar Traditional Market in Semarang. The method used in this study is a descriptive qualitative method followed by an in-depth analysis of the trading space. The study results indicate that the arrangement of merchandise in Johar Market is a social activity of traders that demonstrates togetherness and a sense of brotherhood among traditional market traders.
