Abstract

The primary focus of this research is to examine how persuasive language is employed not merely to convey information, but as a strategic instrument for building image and social influence within an academic platform. This study adopts a descriptive qualitative approach using rhetorical analysis based on Aristotle’s rhetorical triad of ethos, pathos, and logos. The data consist of persuasive utterances collected through close listening and verbatim transcription of an official video recording. The analysis focuses on the use of diction, metaphor, and argumentative structure that contribute to shaping audience perception. The findings reveal that the three rhetorical dimensions are orchestrated systematically, beginning with the construction of intellectual ethos and speaker authority in the early stages of the discourse, followed by the management of pathos in a moderate and reflective manner to foster emotional engagement with the audience, and reinforced by logos through logical reasoning and academically nuanced argumentation. These findings underscore that persuasive effectiveness in public academic communication largely depends on the dynamic integration and function of the three rhetorical elements. This study contributes to the development of discourse analysis and rhetorical studies within the context of educational communication in Indonesia.

Abstract

The importance of teacher communication in creating communicative, interactive, and responsive interactions during classroom learning with students. This certainly makes language in speech an important tool as a means of communication in conveying learning materials, giving instructions, directing, and motivating students during the learning process. The use of appropriate speech can increase student interaction and involvement during the learning process. Pragmalinguistics is a combination of two disciplines of pragmatics and linguistics. In communication activities, pragmalinguistics has an important role related to language politeness and sentence structures used in communication. The purpose of this article is to describe teacher speech acts in the process of learning Indonesian in the classroom. The research method uses a qualitative approach. Data collection was carried out through classroom observation. The study was conducted during Indonesian language learning for grade VII junior high school students. The subjects of this study were Indonesian language teachers and grade VII students of SMP Negeri 37 Semarang City. Data analysis was carried out by categorizing speech acts based on Lech's theory of locution, illocution, and perlocution. The research results show that the pragmalinguistics of Indonesian language teachers' speech in junior high school learning include several speech acts, including illocutionary acts to convey information, commands, and questions. Illocutionary acts are used to give orders, requests, or express emotions. Perlocutionary acts are used to influence students to take action. These three speech acts support effective learning interactions in the classroom.

Abstract

This article analyzes the representation of female cigarette workers in S. Jai’s Khutbah di Bawah Lembah through a Marxist feminist lens. While previous studies have examined women’s exploitation in literature and the industrial workforce, limited attention has been given to how literary texts depict women cigarette workers within the intersections of commodification, social reproduction, alienation, and identity fragmentation. This study adopts a qualitative descriptive approach employing critical textual analysis of the novel’s narrative structure, dialogues, and portrayals of women’s labor and bodily experience. The findings reveal that the novel positions female workers within unequal labor relations characterized by low wages, double workloads, workplace discipline, and restricted agency. Moreover, the logic of exploitation extends beyond the factory, encompassing the domestic sphere, where the home is portrayed as a site shaped by subsistence pressures and reproductive labor. From a Marxist feminist perspective, these conditions illuminate the interconnectedness of production, social reproduction, and women’s experiences of alienation. This study contributes to contemporary Indonesian literary scholarship by demonstrating how the novel articulates women’s exploitation not only as an economic issue but also as a process that influences domestic life and the construction of female subjectivity.

Abstract

The rapid expansion of digital media has transformed religious communication, enabling spiritual guidance to be accessed beyond formal educational settings. This study examines online ruqyah as a source of nonformal religious learning and explores its socioeducational implications for participants’ religious literacy. Using a descriptive qualitative approach within an interpretative paradigm, the research analyzes eleven ruqyah sessions conducted by Jam’iyyah Ruqyah Ahlussunah Waljamaah (JRA) on the Ruqyah Aswaja TV YouTube channel. Data were collected through documentation and non-participant observation, followed by verbatim transcription and thematic analysis. The findings indicate that online ruqyah sessions function as multidimensional learning environments where religious knowledge, practices, and values are transmitted through ritual-based interaction mediated by digital technology. Participants develop theological understanding, practical religious skills, emotional engagement, and reflective awareness through guided participation and repeated exposure. The accessibility of YouTube supports voluntary and self-directed learning while fostering virtual religious communities. From a socioeducational perspective, online ruqyah integrates spiritual healing with religious education, demonstrating the potential of digital platforms to enhance religious literacy and spiritual well-being in contemporary Muslim societies.
