Abstract

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has hit the world since January 2020, and until now the cases are still increasing. The impact is very global covering various aspects, covering all regions in the world including Indonesia and the city of Malang in particular. As a tourism city that is very superior, of course it is very hard to hit and reduce regional income. As a tourism city that has almost a thousand MSMEs (recorded in the Malang Cooperative Service) that supports the income of the city of Malang, it finally has to go out of business. The group of residents of RT 07 Rw 05, 25% of the population has affected MSMEs. There are those who reduce their business operations, reduce production, reduce employees and some even close their businesses. The lack of income coupled with the low productivity of the citizens adds to the various problems that arise during this pandemic. Coupled with the high prices of basic commodities, agricultural products such as vegetables, fruits, spices, therefore, training activities are needed that can boost the productivity and economy of the residents. This training activity for making powder preparations is expected to add insight to the residents, so that residents can meet their instant food needs independently and if possible they can commercialize the products they produce.

Abstract

Abstract

The issue of non-biodegradable plastic waste has driven the development of environmentally friendly bioplastics. This study aims to utilize corncob waste as a raw material for bioplastic production with the addition of varying amounts of silica (SiO₂) and sorbitol as a plasticizer. Corncobs were processed into starch and then mixed with sorbitol and silica in specific variations to produce bioplastics. The bioplastics were characterized by evaluating their thickness, tensile strength, elongation, biodegradability, and moisture content. The results showed that the addition of silica improved the mechanical strength of the bioplastic, while sorbitol enhanced its flexibility. The optimum formulation was obtained at specific concentrations of silica and sorbitol, producing bioplastics with physical and mechanical properties that meet biodegradable standards. In conclusion, corncob waste has potential as an environmentally friendly alternative material for bioplastics, with its quality further enhanced through the addition of silica and sorbitol.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effect of variations in the volume of EM4 bioactivator and the amount of bran on the characteristics of organic fertilizer made from corncob waste. The background of this study is the need for an alternative fertilizer that is environmentally friendly, affordable, and utilizes agricultural waste. The variations in the volume of EM4 used were 15 mL, 20 mL, and 25 mL, and the amount of bran was 5, 15, 25, 35, and 45 grams. The parameters analyzed included C/N content, nutrient content (N, P, K), water content, and pH, referring to the SNI 7763:2018 and SNI 7763:2024 standards. The results showed that the combination of EM4, bran, and fermentation time significantly affected the quality of organic fertilizer. Treatment with 35 grams of bran and 15 mL of EM4 for 30 days produced the highest nitrogen content of 0.53%, while the highest phosphorus and potassium contents of 0.64% and 0.82%, respectively, were obtained in the treatment of 25 mL of EM4 and 25 grams of bran for 30 days. The lowest C/N content of 20.51 was also achieved in this treatment, meeting the maximum SNI standard of 25. The water content of all treatments ranged from 2–3%, and the pH was in the range of 4–7, both in accordance with SNI standards. Thus, it can be concluded that increasing the amount of nutrients, bioactivator volume, and fermentation time play an important role in accelerating decomposition, increasing nutrients, and producing organic fertilizer that meets national quality standards

Abstract

Edible films are biodegradable and consumable packaging materials that protect food products from environmental influences. This study aimed to produce and characterize cassava starch–based edible films with sodium alginate from seaweed, glycerol as a plasticizer, and garlic extract as an antibacterial agent using the solvent casting method. The research variables included cassava starch mass (4, 5, and 6 g) and drying time (4, 9, 14, 19, and 24 hours). Film thickness, tensile strength, elongation, moisture content, solubility, and microbiological properties were analyzed. Results showed that starch mass and drying time significantly affected the physical and mechanical properties of the films. The optimum drying time was 14 hours, at which all samples met the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) for moisture content (10–<16%). The best performance was obtained with 6 g starch, producing films with a tensile strength of 5.034 MPa, elongation of 13.48%, and low microbial counts (4–9 cells/100 mL) with negative Escherichia coli, complying with SNI 2897:2008. The addition of garlic extract contributed to the films’ antimicrobial properties. Overall, the formulation demonstrates a balanced combination of mechanical, physical, and microbiological characteristics, providing a practical foundation for developing biodegradable cassava starch–based edible films for food packaging applications.
