Abstract

The development of goat breeding business needs to be done so that the business can compete in the era of industrial 4.0. The study aims to formulate the strategy to increase productivity in goat breeding business on the 4.0 industry era. The study used survey methods. Determination of the sample was done using stratified random sampling that took the region based on high land, moderate and low land. Then, on each level was taken by criteria of number of goats and the dominant species. Number of sample was determined using Nomogram Harry King and the total respondents was 322 farmers. The analysis used was Causal Loop Diagram modeling and Qualitative Descriptive. The results show that to increase the productivity of goat breeders can be done with optimize Information and Communication Technology (ITC) in production factors, utilization management system application and the inovation of feed technology, optimize smartphone as promotion and trading tools, share the information via social media, supply of information service based on website or application and transformation of extension to virtual extension.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the external body score, including body condition score (BCS), body fat percentage (BFP), plumpness index (PI), and body conformation index (BCI), of male Sakub sheep at different physiological ages (lambs vs rams). The research was conducted from October to December 2023 in Pandansari Village, Paguyangan District, and Wanareja Village, Sirampog District, Brebes Regency, Central Java. The data were collected following purposive random sampling procedure and the Nomograph Harry King formula of which 118 male Sakub sheep (59 lambs and 59 rams) were sampled. The data were analyzed using the chi-square test to determine suitability or differences in each category and parameter. The results showed that the average values for lambs and rams are as follows: (1) body condition score of 3 ± 0.59 and 3.5 ± 0.50, (2) body fat percentage of 13.72 ± 2.55 and 15.94 ± 2.22, (3) plumpness index of 0.87 ± 0.02 and 0.88 ± 0.01, and (4) body conformation index of 0.29 ± 0.02 and 0.30 ± 0.01. It can be concluded that rams possess superior body condition and fat reserves, which may reflect their advanced physiological development and greater muscle mass relative to younger animals. This information is critical for optimizing management strategies in Sakub sheep production, particularly in breeding and selection programs aimed at enhancing productivity and carcass quality. Further research is warranted to explore the genetic and environmental factors influencing these traits.

Abstract

The Pangandaran Regency in West Java has shown an increasing trend of beef cattle population over the past three years, reaching its peak of 18,938 in 2021, which indicates a potential opportunity for the development of beef cattle farming businesses. It is crucial to understand the key factors and strategies for this development. The study utilized a participatory survey method and the Harry King Nomogram technique to sample beef cattle farmers, collecting and analyzing the primary and secondary with descriptive, SWOT, and qualitative modeling analyses. The results showed that farmers in both lowland and highland areas were predominantly productive-aged. Performance metrics such as average service per conception and calving interval were observed at 14.48 and 2.37 in lowland areas, and 16.68 and 2.25 in highland areas, respectively. Key factors influencing the development of beef cattle farming in Pangandaran Regency included the availability of agricultural land, a supportive community environment, and effective breeding management. The SWOT analysis positioned both lowland and highland areas in quadrant I, suggesting that an aggressive growth-oriented strategy would be the most appropriate. Proposed strategies include increasing beef cattle population by optimizing agricultural land use, introducing technologies for processing forage feed and agricultural waste, aligning production with market demands through integrated farming practices, and implementing effective livestock waste management systems.
