Abstract

The development of Jawa Brebes (Jabres) cattle as indigenous cattle in Brebes Regency, Indonesia, is carried out using a farmer group approach. Cattle farmers join farmer groups with various motives and purposes. Understanding the motives of indigenous cattle farmers joining farmers group in Brebes Regency, Indonesia, this study aimed to identify the motives of Jabres cattle farmers to join the group and analyze the influencing factors of different motives to join farmers group. The study used a survey method to 119 Jabres cattle farmers in Brebes Regency. Respondents were selected using multistage sampling. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to depict the cattle farmers' characteristics and identify their motives to join the farmers' group. Discriminant analysis identified the influencing factors of Jabres cattle farmers' different reasons for joining the Jabres cattle farmers group. The majority of the Jabres cattle farmers in Brebes Regency (75.6 percent) entered the farmers' group due to social motive and expectancy to feel secure in social interactions with other farmers. Farmer's education is an essential factor that causes differences in cattle farmers' motives in joining farmer groups (P <0.05). Cattle farmers with higher education join the farmers’ group to gain additional knowledge and realize beef cattle business goals (profitability and marketing).

Abstract

In this study, the elasticity of production costs to broiler business income with the partnership pattern in Banyumas regency and production costs and broiler business income with open and closed house systems were examined. The survey approach was used to conduct the research. As the research site, Banyumas regency, one of the hubs for broiler farming in Central Java, was deliberately chosen. Commercial broiler farmers were categorized according to their housing system when choosing the respondents, and 31 farmers used the open housing system, whereas 30 farmers used the closed housing system. The elasticity of production costs to revenue was examined using multiple linear regression while production costs and profits were assessed financially. According to the findings, commercial broiler farmers made an average of IDR 3,626,578 and IDR 4,896,844 each month for 1000 birds in open and closed houses, respectively. The price of DOC, the depreciation of housing, and the depreciation of the farmers' equipment all have a big impact on their revenue. This study's conclusion is that by lowering broiler mortality and making the best use of housing and equipment, farmers may increase their profitability.

Abstract

Problems in dairy cattle agribusiness require attention not only from the farmers themselves but also from farmer organizations. To understand the communication patterns among group members in the agribusiness sector, including the exchange of information related to cattle production, animal health, and wholesale prices, it is essential to analyze the communication network of the dairy cattle farmer group. This network is significant because it serves as the hub of organizational communication, both internally and externally. This research seeks to analyze the communication structure of the dairy cattle farmer group and investigate the relationship between the respondent characteristics and the communication networks within the Tegal Mandiri farmer group in Bogor Regency. The Social Network Analysis (SNA) method and a quantitative approach were used to conduct the research, with the Tegal Mandiri farmer group members in Bogor Regency as the unit of analysis. The group communication structure was analyzed using degree and closeness centrality, and the relationship between respondent characteristics and the communication network was analyzed using Spearman rank correlation. IBM SPSS Statistics 26 and UCINET 6 were the tools used for analysis. The study revealed that 1) the average degree centrality of the group was between 1.00 and 2.20, and the average closeness centrality was between 400.00 and 558.10. 2) The respondents' characteristics of farmers were significantly related to the communication networks within the group. The study found that the communication structure of the Tegal Mandiri farmer group exhibited low connectivity and an ineffective coordination forum.

Abstract

This study explores the personality types of sheep farmers in Banjarnegara Regency and the influencing factors to their personality. Utilizing a quantitative approach with survey design, we collected data from 100 sheep farmers across various agroecological zones in the regency. The analysis revealed that the majority of sheep farmers were middle-aged (48.7 years on average) and extroverted (59%). Extroverted farmers tend to be younger, more open to innovation, and having higher education levels than their introverted counterparts. Logistic regression analysis identified age and education as significant factors influencing personality types (p<0.05), with older farmers were more likely introverted while extroverted farmers were associated with higher education levels. The findings suggest that personality traits drive sheep farmers in their farming practices, decision-making, and adaptability to change. This study has underscored the importance of tailored training programs and educational opportunities to enhance the productivity and welfare of sheep farmers in Banjarnegara. Future research should delve deeper into the interplay between personality types and other socio-economic factors to develop more effective empowerment strategies for livestock farmers.

Abstract

Education is the most powerful weapon and is the key to success. The livestock farmers' children's education is very important and related to the role of education in increasing knowledge, skill, and attitude, which improves the welfare of the farmer's family. Therefore, improving the farmers' commitment to children's education and the factors affected by it is necessary. Based on the previous statement, this study aimed to reveal the factors influencing farmers' commitment to children's education. This study was conducted in the Baturraden, Sumbang, Kembaran, and Sokaraja Subdistricts, Banyumas Regency, from January to February 2023, using a cross-sectional survey approach. A total of 525 livestock farmers were recorded as respondents. The data obtained were Structural Equational Modeling Partial Least Square (SEM-PLS) analyzed utilizing the SmartPLS 4 software. The results of this study showed that the increase in farmers' financial condition, children's desires, interests, and motivation could increase farmers' commitment to children's education. The farmers’ knowledge of education services variables did not affect the farmers’ commitment. Farmers’ financial conditions could indirectly affect farmers’ commitment through interests and motivation. A similar condition also occurred in farmers' children’s desire and knowledge of education services. It could be concluded from this study that improving farmers' financial condition followed by intense government educational services information dissemination could improve farmers' commitment to children's education, which would enhance children's academic level in rural areas of Indonesia.

Abstract

Sheep farming in Gegerbitung District, Sukabumi Regency, generates a significant amount of feces waste that is not optimally utilized. This study examines the role of development communication in improving farmers' knowledge regarding the innovation of processing sheep manure into bokashi fertilizer. The study aims to (1) assess farmers' knowledge levels on utilizing sheep manure before and after extension activities, (2) analyze differences in knowledge levels between pre- and post-extension periods, and (3) examine the relationship between farmers' characteristics and their knowledge improvement. This research employs a quantitative pre-test and post-test design involving 117 sheep farmers selected through purposive sampling from five farmer groups. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive analysis, the Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and Spearman's rank correlation. The results indicate a significant increase in farmers' knowledge after the extension activities. The Wilcoxon test yielded a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), confirming a significant difference in knowledge levels before and after the training. Spearman's correlation analysis showed a positive relationship between age and knowledge level (rs = 0.190, p < 0.05), while the number of livestock owned had a negative correlation with knowledge level (rs = −0.314, p < 0.01). These findings highlight the effectiveness of development communication in facilitating knowledge transfer among farmers. The study suggests that future extension programs, in addition to addressing labor and time constraints, should be tailored to the demographic characteristics of farmers to enhance the adoption of sustainable waste management innovations
