Abstract

Introduction: Critically-ill patients experience catabolic stress and inflammatory responses resulting in increased catabolism to meet energy demands. Neutrophil lymphocyte ratio (NLR) is used to assess immune and stress responses. Method: This study was a cross-sectional study of subjects aged ≥18 years admitted to the intensive care unit of Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo National Central General Hospital and University of Indonesia Hospital. The characteristics of the study subjects included age, gender, nutritional status, diagnosis of ICU admission, protein intake, fat intake, and carbohydrate intake. Bivariate analysis was performed to evaluate the correlation between energy intake and neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio.Result: There were 44 subjects with a median age of 55 years (19-86). Nutritional status based on body mass index (BMI) obtained 31.8% normal nutritional status, 20.5% severe malnutrition, 25% obesity grade 1. The most common diagnoses were surgery and trauma 20.5% of subjects and sepsis 20.5% of subjects. Median RNL was 10.39 (2.51-59.5), energy intake was 10.5 (3-29) kcal/kg BW/day, protein intake was 0.4 (0-1.2) g/kg BW/day, fat intake was 18 (0-29)% and carbohydrate intake was 92 (23-184) g/day.Conclusion: There was no correlation between energy intake and NLR.

Abstract

The prevalence of malnutrition is considerably high among patients with pancreatic cancer and that Whipple procedure is associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. Post-Whipple procedure nutritional therapy can help to preserve nutritional status, accelerate recovery of functional capacity, and improve patient’s quality of life. A 65-year-old malnourished woman underwent Whipple procedure for adenocarcinoma of ampulla of Vater. Oral pre-operative nutrition was given in the form of normal food and oral nutritional supplement (ONS). Eight hours before surgery, the patient received ONS containing 30 g carbohydrate. The patient was given early enteral nutrition at <48 hours post-operatively and was given oral nutrition as soon as she regained consciousness. The patient experienced post-operative pancreatic fistula (POPF) grade A. Post-operative in-hospital and homecare nutritional therapy included supply of energy, macronutrients, micronutrients, and nutritional education adjusted to the patient’s clinical condition and intake tolerance. Energy intake during hospitalization attained 109% of the estimated total energy requirement that consisted of up to 1.9 g/kg/day protein. Homecare nutritional intake reached almost 2 times basal energy requirement with 2.2 g/kg/day protein intake. The patient experienced improvement of clinical symptoms, POPF, intake tolerance, glycemic control, and functional capacity. The patient was allowed to be discharged and treated in the outpatient clinic, without readmission in the next 2 months. Adequate hospital and homecare medical nutritional therapy in post-Whipple procedure may improve nutritional status and functional capacity, improve clinical outcome, and prevent readmission of patients.

Abstract

Background: Stroke is a leading cause of global morbidity, mortality, and substantial economic burden. Modifiable stroke risk factors, including hypertension, dyslipidemia, obesity, and diabetes mellitus, can be effectively managed through targeted nutritional interventions. Nutritional management also supports neurological recovery and contributes to improved clinical outcomes in stroke survivors. Methods: A literature review was conducted using PubMed, MEDLINE, and EMBASE databases from the last ten years, focusing on nutritional management for stroke prevention, clinical outcomes, dietary patterns, and nutrient supplementation during post-stroke recovery. Results: Dietary strategies, including Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH), high intake of dietary fiber, and omega-3 fatty acids, significantly reduce stroke risk by improving cardiovascular health and decreasing inflammation. Supplementation with micronutrients such as B vitamins supports neurological and vascular function. Post-stroke nutritional issues such as dysphagia, malnutrition, sarcopenia, and pressure injuries commonly impair patient recovery. Targeted nutritional intervention, particularly adequate protein and branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) supplementation, help preserve muscle mass, enhance functional recovery, and optimize rehabilitation outcomes. Conclusions: Nutritional management plays a crucial role in both preventing stroke and improving clinical outcomes following stroke. Implementing effective nutritional strategies, together with patient education on healthy dietary practices, is fundamental for reducing stroke risk, accelerating recovery, and enhancing quality of life.

Abstract

Diarrhea is One in five children in Indonesia does not drink enough water, but that’s not the only problem regarding child health and water consumption. The prevalence of Diarrhea in Indonesian children is one in four children under 5 years old. The high prevalence is closely linked to poor sanitation and unsafe drinking water. Water comprises 75% body weight in infants to 55% in the elderly, and plays very crucial role in cellular hemostasis and life. Therefore, the optimal functioning of our body requires a good hydration level from safe drinking water.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

A global pandemic, COVID-19, has struck 216 countries with more than 9 million cases and 420.000 deaths. In Indonesia alone, 49.000 people have been infected with more than 2.000 deaths. To reduce the transmission rate and break the chain of transmission, various countries in the world require people to limit and mitigate activities outside the house, especially for high-risk groups: the elderly and groups with comorbidities. Although there is no age group protected from SARS-CoV-2 infection, the elderly group shows significantly higher mortality and severity of the disease when compared with young and middle age. Case fatality rate in the elderly ranges between 8% in patients aged ≥80 years, 8% in patients aged 70-79 years, and up to 49% in critical cases. Other studies also show that the average age of patients who need the intensive care unit (ICU) is older than patients who do not require ICU.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to assess the association between Nutrition Fact Panel (NFP) use and diet quality among university students. A comparative cross sectional study was conducted in 2019 among 172 college students living in dormitory of Universitas Indonesia, Depok, Indonesia. Data about socioeconomic and demographic characteristics, food preparation, NFP use and nutritional knowledge were collected through interview using structured questionnaire. Nutritional status was obtained by direct height and weight measurement. Diet quality was measured using Diet Quality Index-International (DQI-I) score, derived from 3x24 hours recall. Finding of this study showed that the characteristics of NFP users and non-users were not differed significantly except for nutritional knowledge in which NFP users were 1.852 times more likely to have good knowledge than NFP non-users (p<0.05; 95% CI:1.009−3.396). The median total diet quality score was categorized as low (44 out of 100). There was no association between NFP use and total diet quality score even after controlling for possible confounder. However, the exploration in each component of diet quality measurement showed adequacy score of calcium was significantly higher in NFP users than non-users (p<0.05). NFP use also positively associated to total variety score (β=0.985; p<0.05). Future nutrition interventions could focus on enhancing the use and understanding of NFP among university students

Abstract

Introduction: The global prevalence of obesity is on the rise, including in Indonesia. High energy intake from sugar is a growing concern worldwide due to its association with weight gain, tooth decay, and non-communicable diseases. A prior study revealed that 10.9% of Indonesian adults consumed energy from sweetened beverages in excess of the WHO recommendation. This study aimed to assess the consumption of sweetened beverages in male and female college students in Indonesia. Method: The study was conducted at Universitas Indonesia and involved 107 subjects aged 19-21 years who resided in student dormitories. Result: The result found the median BMI in female was higher than male. In female, 3 out of 10 students was overweight-obese, while 1 out of 10 in male. Interestingly, the median daily intake of sweetened beverages significantly higher in male than female; 387 (25–1580) vs 246 (0–762) ml/day (p=0.001). Added sugar content in beverages in males was higher than half of Indonesian recommendation (28.4 [1.9–134.4] vs 19.2 [0–61.1]) which contributed to energy as much as 170.9 (12.4–625.7) kcal/ day or about 8.9% of total energy intake than female (108.5 [0–394.4] kcal/day). Compared to Indonesian guideline, 12% of male subjects consumed added sugar higher than 50 g/day. Simultaneously, 7 out of 10 subjects consumed energy from sweetened beverages higher than 10% of their total energy intake (WHO recommendation). The BMI and prevalence of overweight-obese were higher in female, while the sweetened beverage was higher in male. It might be caused by the physical activity in male was higher than female. Although male had higher energy intake from SSB, their energy output through physical activity balanced with energy input. Conclusion: These finding alerted the university as educational institution should take an action to prevent this issue since the prevalence of overweight-obesity and sweetened beverage consumption has occurred in young age.
