Abstract

This article examines Ibn Taymiyya's vision of governance, spotlighting the concepts of public interest (mas{lahah) and prosperity (falâh) within the Islamic law (sharî’a) framework. The increasing importance of Islamic governance in contemporary political discussions, particularly in Muslim-majority societies striving to harmonize tradition with modernity, underscores the relevance of this inquiry. The primary aim is to synthesize existing scholarship on Ibn Taymiyya's contributions to statecraft and its ethical dimensions, elucidating how his principles can guide contemporary governance. The literature reveals a diverse yet fragmented landscape, encompassing historical analysis, theological discourse, and socio-political critiques, reflecting a burgeoning interest in the intersection of Islamic jurisprudence and governance models. This study employs qualitative analysis of both primary texts and contemporary interpretations, creating a nuanced overview of Ibn Taymiyya's political thought. The results indicate that he champions a governance model that prioritizes community welfare, grounded in ethical accountability and justice. His vision emphasizes the alignment of state policies with principles of justice and public interest, asserting that adherence to Islamic values is essential for achieving prosperity. In conclusion, this study contends that Ibn Taymiyya’s insights are relevant and crucial for modern statecraft, providing a robust framework for embedding ethical considerations into governance.

Abstract

Navigating the intersection of religious doctrines and legislative frameworks poses a significant challenge in the abortion discourse, particularly in Indonesia. This study investigates the legitimacy of abortion through the dual perspectives of Islamic jurisprudence and positive law within Indonesia’s intricate socio-cultural and religious milieu, where Islamic principles deeply influence legal interpretations and societal views. The study aims to dissect the complex legal and religious debates surrounding abortion in Indonesia, offering a thorough analysis of its legitimacy under both Islamic jurisprudence and state law. Current literature reveals a fragmented legal landscape marked by diverse interpretations and applications of Islamic principles and state laws, resulting in inconsistent legal outcomes. Adopting a qualitative methodology, this research utilizes doctrinal analysis of primary and secondary legal sources, statutory laws, judicial decisions, and Islamic legal texts. Findings highlight a stark dichotomy between strict prohibitions in traditional Islamic jurisprudence and more lenient, context-specific interpretations by contemporary scholars. The Indonesian legal system, heavily influenced by Islamic values, nonetheless displays flexibility in cases involving maternal health risks or severe fetal anomalies. Ultimately, this study advocates for a nuanced, context-sensitive legal framework that harmonizes Islamic jurisprudence with positive law. It proposes a balanced approach that respects religious values while addressing modern societal needs and medical realities, aiming to ensure legal clarity and safeguard women’s rights in Indonesia.

Abstract

Student character problems in the modern era are growing due to globalization, while education still tends to emphasize cognitive aspects alone. Although character building should be central, the implementation of holistic education and integration of divine values remains suboptimal in many schools. This study aims to examine the concept and implementation of holistic education and its implications in the formation of the religious character of students at SMP Thursina International Islamic Boarding School, Malang. The research method uses a qualitative approach with a case study design. Sampling was carried out using purposive sampling, and data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model. The results of the study show that the concept of holistic education is stated in the vision and mission of the institution, guided by the Qur'an that humans were created in the best form, so that holistic education is needed. The implementation of holistic education is seen from the integration of six curricula covering religious, academic, and self-development aspects, as well as the instillation of RECODING values (Religious, Caring, Open-minded, Inspiring) inside and outside the classroom. The character-building process is carried out through the habit of worship, teacher role models, the environment, and evaluation through a merit and demerit point system. It has significant implications for students' religious character in daily worship (such as congregational prayer, reading the Qur'an, Sunnah fasting), caring for others, discipline, respecting teachers and friends. This study has implications for becoming a relevant model to be applied in other Islamic educational institutions, especially in the concept of holistic education, integration of divine values in learning and students' daily lives, and evaluation is carried out using a merit and demerit point system to shape students' character.

Abstract

This study discusses the concept of tax Islamization according to Syed M. Naquib Al-Attas, where Al-Attas argues that tax Islamization aims to reform the taxation system to comply with sharia principles, which emphasize justice, social responsibility, and economic sustainability. Within the framework of Islamization, tax is not only seen as a fiscal instrument, but also as a spiritual and social means to achieve community welfare. Al-Attas proposes the integration of zakat as the main mechanism in replacing the conventional tax system, by highlighting the importance of Islamic ethical values, such as tauhid, amanah, and ihsan, in tax management. This study uses a qualitative method with a literature study approach. The results of this study indicate that the concept of tax according to al-Attas must be integrated with Islamic principles, because there are secular elements in the existing tax concept, so that tax can be a tool to achieve justice and community welfare.

Abstract

Modernity has not only resulted in advancements in science and technology but has also given rise to fundamental dilemmas within the landscape of contemporary Islamic thought—particularly concerning the crisis of meaning, the marginalization of spirituality, and the dominance of secular epistemology. This article aims to analyze Sayyed Hossein Nasr’s critique of modernity and examine the relevance of the perennial philosophy he proposes in addressing these challenges within the context of contemporary Islamic thought. This study employs a qualitative research method grounded in library research. The approach utilized is philosophical hermeneutics combined with discourse analysis of Nasr’s thought, particularly referencing primary works such as Islam and the Plight of Modern Man. Nasr contends that modernity is inherently reductionist, as it places excessive emphasis on the empirical-material dimension while neglecting the metaphysical aspect and the human connection to transcendent reality. In response, the perennial philosophy he advocates underscores the significance of universal spiritual values, the transcendent unity of religions, and the preservation of tradition as foundational elements for restoring the balance between spirituality and rationality in contemporary life. Unlike previous studies, this article specifically emphasizes the integration of Nasr’s perennial philosophy with the dynamics of contemporary Islamic thought, particularly in addressing the epistemological crisis resulting from the modernization of knowledge. The article contributes to the discourse on the significance of revitalizing spirituality and the Islamic scholarly tradition as a critical and constructive response to the dominance of modernity.

After carrying out the analysis, this research found that there are 25 verses in the Qur'an that use flora symbols, which are divided into 2 classifications, namely general and specific symbol mention classifications. Which is divided into 3 general mentions of floral symbols and 7 specific mentions of floral symbols. The symbols mentioned are generally used in the Qur'an to show God's power and mercy in everything that has been created. Meanwhile, the Qur'an uses specific mention of flora symbols to show the benefits of flora in the continuity of human life.
