Abstract

Background: Globally, mental health has become a major issue in health development today. Campus communities cannot be separated from the problem of mental health. Aims: This study aims to describe the relationship between demographic and lifestyle factors with mental health status in campus communities. Method: This study used a quantitative method with a cross-sectional design. Data collection was conducted through an online survey on 11-30 October 2021 at one of the universities in Yogyakarta. There were 503 respondents consisting of students, lecturers, and education staff. The instrument of mental health was the Self-Reporting Questionnaire-29 (SRQ-29). Result: There were indications of needing referral due to anxiety and depression as much as 33.4%, and there were 5.28% of respondents requiring referral due to psychotic disorders, drugs, and PTSD. Demographic factors associated with mental health status were job status, sex, and age. Meanwhile, lifestyle aspects that are associated with mental health status are physical activity duration and fruit and vegetable consumption per day. This was indicated by the respective p-values of 0.000 (job status), 0.042 (sex), 0.027 (age), 0.003 (duration of physical activity), and 0.011 (consumption of fruits and vegetables per day). Furthermore, multivariate analysis showed that the duration of physical activity, as well as fruit and vegetable consumption, had a negative linear effect on the incidence of mental health disorders. Conclusion: The main findings provide baseline data for developing healthy campuses as part of sustainable development goals (SDGs), particularly for mental health programs.

Abstract

The resistance to Covid-19 vaccination is not solely the community's fault. Educating the public on the importance of vaccination and the prevention of hoax information would contribute to the need for exemplary implementation of vaccination programs in Aceh Province. Insufficient information regarding vaccination to the public has caused many people to refuse vaccination. This study aims to evaluate the health promotion strategy of the Aceh Provincial Health Office in the implementation of Covid-19 vaccination in Aceh through Lawrence Green's (1984) behavioral theory. This qualitative research was conducted by observing and interviewing six Aceh Provincial Health Office informants and analyzing relevant documents. The results of the study indicate that there are factors in the health promotion strategy that shape people's acceptance toward Covid-19 vaccination; (1) including predisposing factors through providing information, forming attitudes and values "‹"‹of beliefs about vaccination in various media platforms; (2) enabling factors through the availability of facilities, medicines, and health workers; and (3) reinforcing factors which manifested in the formation of the supports from community leaders and the availability of policies that support Covid-19 vaccination. The study suggests improving these factors to gain positive responses from the public toward the Covid-19 vaccination program.

Abstract

Introduction: In Indonesia, smoking is often perceived as a behavior associated with men, leaving women's perspectives on tobacco use largely unexplored. However, smoking has significant social, economic, health, and political implications for both genders. Despite the low reported smoking rates among women, their participation in tobacco control initiatives remains minimal. Female smokers face heightened social stigma compared to men, with stereotypes labeling them as socially unacceptable. This stigma often discourages quitting rather than deterring women from smoking in the first place, contributing to the underreporting of female smokers and making their numbers appear negligible. Objectives: This study aims to explore women’s experiences with smoking-related consequences in two locations, Banda Aceh and Jakarta. Findings indicate that both women who smoke and those whose partners are smokers encounter challenges in either starting or attempting to quit smoking. Additionally, beliefs about health and economic consequences serve as a common justification among smokers for not considering quitting. Methods: A qualitative study using semi-structured interviews seeks to explore the smoking-related experiences of women in two Indonesian cities, Jakarta and Banda Aceh. Results: The findings reveal that both female smokers and women with smoking partners face difficulties in initiating or maintaining cessation attempts. Additionally, perceptions of health and economic consequences often serve as justifications for avoiding efforts to quit smoking. Conclusion: The study found that socio-religious factors have a significant influence on women's experiences with smoking. Participants expressed beliefs about smoking tied to health and financial concerns, including the notion that outcomes like illness, death, and financial changes are predestined and beyond individual control (fatalism). This fatalistic perspective, shaped by their social and religious environment, hinders their efforts to quit smoking, making cessation more challenging.

Abstract

Background: In Indonesia, smoking is very prevalent, mainly among men, causing a high prevalence of smoking-related diseases. In this country, smoking is linked to social construction rooted in how to become men and women. Male smoking is acceptable; otherwise, the social stigma associated with female smokers drives them to conceal their habits, making intervention difficult. Objective: The paper examined the gender aspect of smoking and communication in promoting health within a sensitive issue and context—smoking and gender in Indonesia. Method: This paper employed a thematic analysis of two doctoral theses on gender and smoking, each thesis representing either male or female aspects, to explore the relationship between gender values and smoking. Mutual factors contributing to men's and women's smoking behaviors were gender values related to smoking, the importance of different life stages, and children as an entry point for adult smoking cessation. Results: Tobacco control interventions may be hampered if these influences are undermined. Conclusion: It can be concluded, smoking-related health communication must consider gender variations and empower gender values.

Abstract

Information literacy is defined as the ability to access publications, understand, and critically evaluate media content. The competence level of community in information literacy encompasses the regulation of message interpretation passing through online media. Therefore, this study aims to determine the information literacy competence of the Aceh people in curtailing COVID-19 hoax. The data collection technique used was a questionnaire, involving 1078 respondents who were in 5 study locations, namely Banda Aceh, West Aceh, Central Aceh, and North Aceh, and Langsa. The results showed that 836 (77.55%) respondents understood hoax as intentional fake news, while 576 (53.43%) indicated that it is inaccurate information. A total of 559 (51.86%) respondents were sometimes able to distinguish between hoax and true information. Furthermore, most respondents suggested that there is a need for socialization or education in the community to prevent the spread of hoax. By promoting information literacy, self-control over the publication received is carried out optimally, which is a solution to prevent cases of circulating hoax. Furthermore, information literacy is an effective method in dealing with false publications by introducing the characteristics of fake news, verification procedures, and following up on issues that are likely to fall into the hoax category. Abstract

Smoking remains a prevalent habit in many households, particularly in regions where cultural norms strongly accept tobacco use. The aim of this study was to examine the influential role of wives in Gayo Lues, Aceh, Indonesia, in promoting smoking cessation within their families. Amidst cultural norms that widely accept smoking, these wives employed both persuasive and, occasionally, coercive methods to encourage healthier behaviors among family members. Utilizing a qualitative approach with Participatory Action Research (PAR), data were collected through in-depth interviews with seven wives who have firsthand experience with smoking behaviors in their families. The findings revealed that wives in Gayo Lues act as both health monitors and guardians, balancing emotional support with firm boundaries to foster a smoke-free home environment. Their roles extended beyond traditional caregiving, as they actively shape family health outcomes. In conclusion, this study underscored the importance of empowering wives as health advocates in public health efforts, particularly in culturally conservative settings. Future research could further explore the broader socio-cultural dynamics influencing wives’ health advocacy roles and assess the sustainability of these behaviors over time.

Abstract

This study explores the bargaining position of Acehnese women in public policy forums through their participation in Musrena (Women’s Development Planning Forum) and Musrenbang (General Development Planning Forum) in Banda Aceh, Indonesia. Using a contemporary feminist ethnographic approach, the research documents how the Balee Inong community—a grassroots women’s network—engages with the state planning apparatus to influence gender-responsive budgeting and development agendas. Data were collected through field observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation studies involving key stakeholders at village and city levels. Findings indicate that Musrena serves as an effective platform for amplifying women’s voices in formal planning processes, offering both structural and symbolic space for women's political engagement. The institutionalization of Musrena through local regulations has significantly enhanced women's visibility and agency, particularly in negotiating budget allocations and shaping gender-equitable policies. Furthermore, the study reveals how historical narratives, religious values, and local wisdom interact with state mechanisms to produce a uniquely Acehnese model of participatory development. The research highlights the potential of localized feminist strategies in transforming hierarchical planning systems into more inclusive, bottom-up processes. It contributes to global discourses on gender budgeting, feminist governance, and community-based planning innovations.

Abstract

The 2022 report from the Indonesia Central Securities Depository (KSEI) indicates that although the stock price index declined, the number of capital market investors, particularly from Generation Z, experienced significant growth. This trend is driven by the development of financial technology (fintech), which facilitates easier access to investments for younger generations. One prominent fintech platform is Bibit, which became the most popular mutual fund investment application in Indonesia in 2021. Generation Z, aged 19–25, is highly active on social media, including TikTok, which Bibit utilizes as a primary marketing platform. This study aims to analyze the influence of Bibit’s advertising exposure on TikTok on Generation Z’s investment interest in Banda Aceh. The AIDA (Attention, Interest, Desire, and Action) model is used as the analytical framework. This study employs an explanatory quantitative approach using a survey method, distributing online questionnaires. The research sample consists of 100 respondents selected through accidental sampling based on the Slovin formula. Data analysis is conducted using simple linear regression and t-tests. The results indicate that the t-value is greater than the t-table value (5.404 > 1.660), with a coefficient of determination of 0.230, meaning that Bibit’s advertising exposure on TikTok contributes 23% to investment interest. Thus, it can be concluded that Bibit’s advertising exposure on TikTok has a positive and significant influence on Generation Z’s investment interest in Banda Aceh.

Abstract

Aceh, a province recognized for its high disaster risk potential, is frequently subjected to various natural calamities. The inhabitants of this region often face anxiety, uncertainty, and an overload of information during such events, necessitating a selective approach to information acquisition. This study explores this phenomenon, specifically the selective acquisition of health information amid disaster scenarios. The focus is on understanding how individuals prioritize information that they perceive as relevant and valuable, while disregarding what is deemed unimportant or unreliable. Addressing a notable gap in existing literature on health communication during disasters, this research emphasizes its critical role in enhancing disaster preparedness. Data were collected through Focus Group Discussions (FGD) involving 30 participants across three hazard-prone areas in Aceh: Central Aceh (landslides), North Aceh (floods), and West Aceh (earthquakes). Findings reveal that participants typically engage in passive information seeking, selectively assimilating health information that conforms to their pre-established subjective beliefs, values, and emotional states from trusted sources. The study offers insights into how individuals manage health information in crisis situations and suggests that stakeholders in disaster management devise targeted communication strategies to effectively disseminate vital health information during disasters.
