Abstract

National waste generation continues to increase each year, and a large proportion remains inadequately managed. One applicable treatment alternative is thermal processing using an incinerator, which produces heat energy that can potentially be utilized as an energy source for a boiler to generate steam. This study aims to obtain a conceptual design of a water tube boiler integrated with an incinerator with a capacity of 100 kg/h and to evaluate its structural strength through Finite Element Analysis (FEA)-based simulation. The methods used include energy balance calculation, heat transfer analysis, determination of the main dimensions, geometric modeling, and static structural simulation using SolidWorks software, with AISI 304 material and an operating pressure of 4 bar. The calculation results show that the available combustion heat energy is 680,000 kJ/h, with the boiler capacity set at 40 kg/h. The required heat transfer area is met using five heating tubes with a natural circulation system, and the maximum allowable working pressure (MAWP) is 1.156 MPa. The simulation results show a maximum von Mises Stress of 71.248 MPa at the junction between the drum and the water pipe, a maximum displacement of 0.217 mm, and a minimum Factor of Safety of 2.903, indicating that the structure is able to withstand the operating pressure. Based on the design and simulation results, the designed water tube boiler meets the specified capacity requirement and has adequate structural strength.

Abstract

Indonesia faces challenges in the transition toward cleaner and more sustainable energy, one of which is the utilization of rice husk biomass waste. Magelang Regency produces approximately 33,960 – 39,054 tons of rice husk per year, which has not been optimally utilized. Rice husk can be converted into synthesis gas through gasification, although this process produces tar that can clog equipment, cause corrosion, and reduce system efficiency. This study models the rice husk gasification process using ASPEN Plus software with a kinetic reaction approach at an operating temperature of 900°C, identified as the optimum temperature, and analyzes the effect of equivalence ratio (0.30, 0.35, and 0.40) on tar content and synthesis gas composition. The reactor model was developed through a drying stage using an RStoic block, pyrolysis using RYield and RGibbs blocks, and gasification using RPlug blocks divided into oxidation and reduction zones. The results show that increasing the equivalence ratio from 0.30 to 0.40 effectively reduces tar content from 0.03109 kg/Nm³ to 0.01206 kg/Nm³, while H2 content decreases from 14.01% to 11.66%, CO from 23.54% to 18.70%, and CH4 from 1.04% to 0.86%, whereas CO2 content increases from 5.95% to 8.23%. The condition of equivalence ratio 0.30 produced the best synthesis gas quality, while the lowest tar content was achieved at equivalence ratio 0.40.

Abstract

Synthetic gas (syngas) is a gaseous product of biomass gasification primarily composed of hydrogen (H₂) and carbon monoxide (CO), making it a promising alternative energy source. However, the flammable and toxic nature of syngas requires a safe and efficient storage system. This study aims to analyze the structural strength of an Adsorbed Natural Gas (ANG)-based pressure vessel for syngas storage at an operating pressure of 35 bar using the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) method. The pressure vessel was designed in accordance with the ASME BPVC Section VIII Division 1 standard, while the numerical simulation was performed using SolidWorks 2022. The design resulted in a horizontal pressure vessel with an internal diameter of 1.26 m and shell and head thicknesses of 36 mm. The simulation results indicated a maximum von Mises stress of 116 MPa, a maximum displacement of 0.705 mm, and a factor of safety of 2.2. The maximum stress remained below the yield strength of SA516 Grade 70 steel, indicating that the pressure vessel design is structurally safe and suitable for operation at a pressure of 35 bar.
