Abstract

This study aims to explore the factors contributing to students' anxiety when speaking English in the tenth grade at SMAN 1 Masbagik during the 2025-2026 academic year. A qualitative descriptive design was used, employing observation, interviews, and questionnaires as the main data collection instruments. The findings reveal that students experience three types of anxiety: communication concerns, test anxiety, and fear of negative evaluation. The main factors that trigger speaking anxiety include limited vocabulary, fear of making mistakes, pronunciation difficulties, and fear of negative evaluation. To overcome these challenges, students applied several strategies such as repeated practice, relaxation techniques, positive self-talk, preparing for language comprehension/grammar, and seeking peer support. This study concluded that student speaking anxiety is a multidimensional problem influenced by linguistic and psychological factors, requiring efforts from teachers and students to foster a more supportive learning environment.

Abstract

This study examines the correlation between students’ responses to English teachers’ instructional methods and their motivation to learn English. Recognizing the significance of motivation in language teaching, the study aims to explore how different teaching methods impact both student engagement and intrinsic motivation. Using a quantitative correlational research design, data were collected from 33 eighth-grade students at MTs Muallimat NWDI Pancor in the 2024-2025 academic year. The analysis reveals a strong positive correlation between students’ responses to teaching methods and their learning motivation (r = 0.642, p < 0.01) as well as between teaching methods and student motivation (r = 0.701, p < 0.01). These findings suggest that teaching methods significantly influence both student engagement and motivation; efficient, student-centered methods lead to greater student involvement in the learning process and higher motivation levels. The study recommends that schools prioritize continuous professional development for teachers, focusing on effective, motivational teaching strategies. This would foster an engaging, supportive learning environment, enhancing students’ ability to succeed in language learning. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the interaction between pedagogy and student psychology, providing valuable insight for both educational practitioners and policymakers.

The purpose of this research was to find out types of learning strategies applied by students of English education study program at Hamzanwadi University. The subjects of research taken were 75 students of the first semester who took basic English grammar course. Descriptive quantitative was used to obtain and analyze data. The research result showed that the most dominant learning strategy in studying grammar was metacognitive (20, 93%), followed by cognitive (18, 49%), social (17, 83%), affective (16, 48%), memory (15, 97%) and the least applied by the students was compensation (10, 25%). Furthermore, the reason why the students tend to apply metacognitive strategy in learning grammar because it enables them to pay attention on a particular grammar pattern, try to understand and relate it to the previous materials which have been familiar to the students’ minds. Thus, it is implied to the teachers to understand the types of learning strategies then guide the students during their study for a better learning outcome.
