Abstract

Oil sludge waste is a potential pollutant for the environment and a major problem in upstream oil and gas activities. The high content of hydrocarbons in oil sludge has the potential to contaminate soil, water and groundwater. The remediation approaches, both physical and chemical, for oil sludge waste have been applied, but the costs are quite high and their effectiveness is inadequate. Two of the economical and environmentally friendly oil sludge waste processing technology options are biopile and composting. The aim of this research is to explore the application of biopiles and composting to reduce total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) levels. There are 4 variations in the biopile, namely B-0 (oil sludge, soil and bulking agent), B-1 (oil sludge, soil, bulking agent and inoculum) B-2 (oil sludge, soil, bulking agent, inoculum and green compost), and B-3 (oil sludge, soil, bulking agent, inoculum and chemical fertilizers), while in composting there are 3 variations namely C-0 (oil sludge, soil and bulking agent), C-1 (oil sludge, soil, bulking agent and green compost), C-2 (oil sludge, soil, bulking agent and chemical fertilizer) with an observation period of 55 days. Biopile application reduced TPH at B-0, B-1, B-2, and B-3 by 67%, 78%, 82%, and B-3 78% consecutively. Composting application reduced TPH at C-0 by 61%, at C-1 by 67%, and at C-2 by 62%. The results implies that the application of bioremediation is able to reduce TPH levels.

Abstract

The development of Artificial Intelligence, particularly in Computer Vision, has enabled real-time recognition of human movements such as head gestures, which can be utilized in smart wheelchairs for users with limited mobility. This study compares two lightweight non-deep-learning methods Lucas–Kanade Optical Flow and Haar Cascade Classifier for real-time head movement detection. Both methods were implemented in Python using OpenCV and tested in four basic directions (left, right, up, and down) under three different lighting conditions: bright, normal, and dim. Each condition consisted of 16 trials per method, resulting in a total of 96 trials. The evaluation focused on detection accuracy and decision time. Under bright lighting, Optical Flow achieved 87.5% accuracy with a decision time of 0.338-1.41 s, while Haar Cascade reached 50% accuracy with 0.616–1.20 s. Under normal lighting, Optical Flow maintained 87.5% accuracy with 0.89–1.21 s, compared to Haar Cascade’s 68.75% accuracy with 0.83–1.25 s. Under dim lighting, Optical Flow improved to 93.8% accuracy with 0.90–1.31 s, whereas Haar Cascade dropped to 62.5% accuracy with 0.89–1.58 s. These findings confirm that Optical Flow delivers more reliable and adaptive performance across varying illumination levels, making it more suitable for real-time smart wheelchair control. This study contributes to the development of affordable assistive technologies and highlights future directions for multi-user testing and hardware integration.

Abstract

Traffic congestion in Indonesia causes significant economic losses and impacts the quality of life of the community. The Smart Traffic Management System (STMS) emerges as a technology-based solution that integrates the Internet of Things (IoT), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and big data to manage vehicle flow adaptively. This research employs the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method with the PRISMA approach to analyze the effectiveness of STMS in reducing congestion and carbon emissions, both in Indonesia and in other countries. The reviewed articles indicate that STMS can reduce vehicle travel time by 8-15%, improve traffic flow smoothness by up to 50%, and decrease carbon emissions by 30-40% per year. Trials in Jakarta demonstrate a 15% increase in traffic smoothness and a reduction in travel time during peak hours. These findings confirm that the implementation of STMS has tremendous potential to realize a more efficient, safe, environmentally friendly, and sustainable urban transportation system.

Abstract

Many urban cities in Indonesia face critical challenges such as limited green open spaces, declining environmental quality, and spatial pressure driven by rapid population growth. These conditions threaten urban environmental resilience, particularly in maintaining quality of life and sustainable resource use. This study aims to formulate adaptive green infrastructure planning strategies for the Baciro historical neighbourhood in Yogyakarta to enhance environmental quality while preserving the area’s cultural identity. A qualitative case study approach was employed, combining spatial planning documents, field observations, and stakeholder interviews. The findings indicate that despite limited open spaces, Baciro offers significant opportunities for green infrastructure development through the utilization of residual and vertical spaces, including narrow alleys, riverbanks, and commercial building façades. Proposed strategies include the implementation of vertical gardens, green corridors, revitalized riverfronts, and pedestrian-friendly green streets. These interventions contribute ecological functions—such as water infiltration, microclimate regulation, and air quality improvement—while also strengthening social cohesion through community participation. Furthermore, integrating green infrastructure with the Transit Oriented Development (TOD) concept expands its role in promoting sustainable mobility and liveable urban spaces. This research demonstrates that green infrastructure can serve as a strategic instrument for achieving urban environmental resilience while safeguarding historical heritage in the face of urbanization pressures. The results provide insights and practical implications for planning similar historic neighbourhoods across Indonesian cities that encounter comparable spatial and environmental challenges.

Abstract

The rapid growth in the number of vehicles has intensified challenges in parking management, leading to traffic congestion and wasted time for drivers searching for available spots. Conventional parking systems, which often rely on manual processes, are inefficient and contribute to these problems. This research addresses these issues by designing and developing an Internet of Things (IoT) based smart parking system to provide real-time monitoring of parking availability. The system utilizes an ESP32 microcontroller, chosen for its integrated Wi-Fi and processing capabilities, as the core processing unit. For vehicle and user management, an RFID-RC522 sensor is used for vehicle entry authentication , while an HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor detects vehicles at the exit. The backend architecture employs a multi-layered approach, using MQTT as the communication protocol with HiveMQ as the broker. System logic and data flows are managed using Node-RED, which communicates with a Flask server to interact with the database. The user interface is a mobile application developed using Android Studio. This application requires user authentication via a login page and provides a real-time dashboard that visually displays the status of parking slots—green for available and red for occupied. The successful implementation of this prototype demonstrates a functional end-to-end solution that effectively integrates hardware and software to create a more efficient and user-friendly parking management system.

Abstract

Internet users currently face significant risks from malicious URLs that facilitate phishing attacks, malware distribution, and data theft. Traditional blacklisting methods have become ineffective against evolving cyberattack techniques. This study proposes a Random Forest classification approach for more accurate malicious URL detection, focusing on critical URL features including URL length, presence of special keywords, subdomain structure, and special character usage. these features train the Random Forest model to distinguish between safe and malicious URLs. We evaluate model effectiveness using accuracy, precision, and recall metrics. This research aims to develop a Random Forest-based malicious URL detection system that is more accurate and adaptive than conventional methods. The study examines both the advantages and limitations of this approach, along with its potential as a reliable detection solution for dynamic digital environments. Evaluation results demonstrate an overall accuracy of 94%, weighted average F1-score of 0.94, and macro average F1-score of 0.94.
