Abstract

The Mahseer fish (Neolissochilus soroides) is a highly valuable aquaculture species due to its economic potential. Currently, this species is being developed in intensive aquaculture systems. As a result, ammonia levels are increasing, which could potentially disrupt the growth and survival of the fish. This study aimed to investigate the effects of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) leaf extract supplementation as an antioxidant on the hematological profile of Mahseer fish exposed to NH4Cl. Four supplementation treatments were employed: 0%, 2.5%, 5%, and 7.5%, each with five replicates. The fish were supplemented with the extract for 40 days and exposed 10 ppm NH4Cl for 48 hours. Blood samples were collRected before rearing, after 40 days of supplementation and NH4Cl exposure. The results demonstrated that supplementation with sweet potato leaf extract (SPLE) positively influenced the hematological profile of mahseer. Specifically, higher doses of the extract enhanced immunity across all treatments. Notably, only the highest doses of 7.5% and 5% effectively mitigated fish stress induced by ammonia exposure for 24 hours. Furthermore, there were no significant differences observed among treatments in response to NH4Cl exposure throughout the study period. These findings underscore the potential of SPLE as an antioxidant supplement to bolster immune function and alleviate oxidative stress in mahseer under ammonia exposure conditions. Further research could focus on optimizing the dosage of SPLE to maximize its antioxidant benefits in aquaculture setting.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the immune response of whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) to prevent infectious myonecrosis virus (IMNV) infection by incorporating Lonicera japonica water extract into artificial feed. A total of 180 whiteleg shrimp were used in four treatment groups (triplicate) receiving different doses of L. japonica extract in their feed, including treatment A (1% w/w), B (2% w/w), C (3% w/w), and D (without supplementation/control). The dietary treatments were applied twice daily for two weeks. On the 15th day, the shrimp were injected intramuscularly at the fifth abdominal segment with IMNV isolates (100 µL/shrimp) and observed for seven days post-infection (dpi). The parameters observed included hemolymph profile, survival rate, gross clinical signs, and water quality. IMNV infection was confirmed through both external clinical signs and PCR tests. The results showed that the addition of L. japonica water extract to the feed improved the survival rate and immune responses of whiteleg shrimp following the IMNV challenge test. In conclusion, dietary supplementation of L. japonica water extract at a concentration of 2% w/w in artificial feed could serve as a preventive agent against IMNV infection in whiteleg shrimp.

Abstract

The fisheries and marine sector in East Java has abundant potential, one of which is Banyuwangi district. Banyuwangi Regency has potential in freshwater aquaculture because it has 324 rivers with an area of 735 km2 and swamps and reservoirs of 60 hectares. One of the villages in Banyuwangi Regency is Segobang Village, which has the potential to have abundant water sources and continuous flow. This potential can be utilized by training and assisting fish nurseries in Segobang Village by utilizing continuously flowing water and Smart Aquaculture Automatized System (SAAS) technology by utilizing biofilters and running water and aeration as a source of oxygen.  The stages carried out in this community service are as follows: initial assessment of the location, infrastructure and technology development, periodic training and mentoring, implementation and monitoring of the cultivation process, and continued marketing and sales. After the training, the Segobang Village community showed a significant increase in knowledge. The average pre-test scores ranged from 30 to 51, while the post-test scores increased to 79 to 87. This improvement shows that participants better understand the SAAS and its use in fish farming. Continued training and practice can help strengthen the adoption of this technology in the community.

Abstract

Pacific white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) is one of the leading fisheries commodities that have important economic value and are in great demand by consumers in the market. Pacific white shrimp has several advantages, namely rapid growth, able to adapt to a high range of salinity, and can be cultured with a super intensive system, but in recent years the total shrimp production in Indonesia has decreased. In 2012 the total shrimp production decreased from 1.900 tons to 1.025 tons, the virus is thought to be a pathogen that triggers disease in shrimp and causes high mortality. The type of virus that causes disease in pacific white shrimp cultivation is Taura Syndrome Virus (TSV), Infectious Myonecrosis Virus (IMNV), and White Spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV). The purpose of this study is to detect viruses that infected and determine the prevalence of viruses that attack pacific white shrimp. The research was conducted in December 2018 to January 2019 at Fish Quarantine Center, Quality Control and Security of Fishery Product Surabaya I. The material used in the study was 37 post larval samples. Samples extracted using Silica Extraction Kit, then detected molecularly using PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction). This research was observational, then the data obtained were analyzed descriptively. The results showed that there were 3 positive samples of IMNV and 2 positive samples of WSSV with prevalence values of 8.10% and 5.40%. High and low prevalence values are influenced by the level of virus spread and inappropriate environmental conditions.   Keywords : Pacific white shrimp, PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction), prevalence, virus.

Abstract

Detriment caused by ectoparasitic infestation was not as big detriment caused by infestation of other organisms such as viruses and bacteria, but it could be a predisposing factor for the infection of more dangerous pathogenic in fish. The aims of this study was to inventory ectoparasites that infecting freshwater fish cultivated in several districts in the Banyuwangi, in which the results were expected to be used as a reference in an effort to prevent the spread of disease in fish culture. The sample of research consisted of tilapia fish, carp and catfish which were obtained from six sub districts in Banyuwangi, those were Kota, Kabat, Licin, Kalipuro, Giri, and Glagah. The ectoparasite examination method was performed naturally by scraping the surface of the body, fins and gills of the fish, then observed under a microscope with magnification ranging from 40 to 400x. The results of further observations were documented and identified by key identification. Ectoparasites which were found infesting freshwater fish in the city of Banyuwangi consisted of 4 genuses: namely Argulus, Lernaea, Chonopeltis and Trichodina. Further research is needed to determine the prevalence and intensity of ectoparasites in order to prevent the spread of ectoparasites in other regions.   Keywords: Inventarisation, ectoparasites, freshwater fish, Banyuwangi

Abstract

Catfish (Clarias sp.) is one of Indonesia's leading fishery commodities whose production continues to be increased. Humic acid is known to help increase growth in several types of fish and is expected to be applied to catfish. This study aims to determine the effect of humic acid in commercial feed on the growth and total number of bacteria in the digestive tract of catfish (Clarias sp.). A total of 300 catfish with an average length of 5.76 ± 0.21 cm and an average weight of 27.92 ± 0.39 g were used in 5 treatments (4 replicates/treatments) of humic acid supplementation in feed with different doses, namely P1 (without humic acid/control), P2 (0.5 %), P3 (1.0%), P4 (1.5 %), and P5 (2.0 %). Maintenance was carried out for 40 days by feeding treatment 3 times a day as much as 5% of body weight. Parameters observed were absolute length growth (cm), absolute weight growth (g), specific growth rate (%), and total bacteria in the digestive tract (colonies/g). Based on the results of the study, it was found that the treatment had a significant effect on the growth and number of bacterial colonies with the optimal dose of humic acid of 0.5.
