Abstract

The study aims to describe the creative thinking process of junior high school students with different Adversity Quotient (AQ) categories (quitter, camper, and climber) in solving numeracy problems. This qualitative research involves three subjects representing distinct AQ categories. Data collection includes the ARP questionnaire, numeracy problem-solving tests, and interviews, with analysis using the Pierce sign concept. Findings reveal camper and climber subjects effectively separate information in the ideation stage, while quitter and climber subjects associate knowledge concepts in generating idea. In preparing a plan for application, camper and climber subjects strategize based on information and knowledge, while in applying an idea, quitter subjects surrender, campers choose easier alternatives, and climbers persist with pre-planned strategies. Results suggest tailored motivation according to students' AQ categories can enhance teacher-student engagement.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the numeracy skills of middle school students from the perspective of multiple intelligences in solving AKM (Asesmen Kompetensi Minimum) problems. The research subjects consist of three eighth-grade students from class VIII-C at SMPN 14 Surabaya, who possess linguistic, logical-mathematical, and visual-spatial intelligences. Data collection was conducted through the examination of multiple intelligence questionnaires, mathematics ability tests, AKM problems, and interviews. These interviews were conducted to gain deeper insights into the students' numeracy skills based on their work results. The data analysis was carried out using numeracy indicators, including communication, mathematization, representation, reasoning and argumentation, problem-solving strategy selection, and the use of symbolic, formal, and technical language and operations. The results of the study indicate that students with linguistic intelligence write down the process of reaching solutions, summarize mathematical results both in written and oral forms, convert contextual problems into mathematical forms using difference, percentage, and average formulas, and transform data presented in bar charts into written form. They also use the provided data to solve problems, create patterns and relationships to address issues logically and correctly, determine the appropriate formulas for solving problems, and write down steps or strategies, although not in detail, while using mathematical symbols in calculations. Students with logical-mathematical intelligence demonstrated similar abilities but with more detailed and clearer steps and the use of more symbols. Meanwhile, students with visual-spatial intelligence showed similar abilities but only summarized results orally and did not write down the solution steps in detail.

Abstract

Inductive reasoning is one of the skills required to solve mathematics problems. As a cognitive process, inductive reasoning is influenced by many factors, including gender differences. This study aims to describe students' inductive reasoning in solving mathematics problems based on gender differences. This research is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach. The subjects were two eighth-grade students from SMPN 6 Tulungagung during the 2024/2025 academic year: one male student and one female student, both with equivalent mathematical abilities. Data collection methods included tests and interviews. Inductive reasoning was analyzed based on the following indicators used by the researcher: (1) observation on particular cases, (2) organization of particular cases, (3) search and prediction patterns, (4) conjecture formulation, (5) conjecture validation, (6) conjecture generalization, and (7) general conjecture justification. The research results indicate that both students observed specific cases, managed specific cases, searched for and conjectured patterns, conjectured formulas, validated conjectures, generalized conjectures, and justified general conjectures. The differences lay in how they acquired initial knowledge and their conjecture validation strategies. The male student acquired initial knowledge based on previously known information and validated conjectures more than once, while the female student acquired initial knowledge based on direct measurement results with the help of a protractor and validated conjectures only once.

Abstract

Understanding of the concept is needed in studying mathematics, including the topic of the Three Variable Linear Equation System (SPLTV). In fact, there are still many students who don't understand the basic concepts well. The research subjects were students in grade 10 high school, each consisting of one student with field independent and field dependent cognitive style. The research instrument which were used consisted of a concept understanding test and interview guidelines. Data analysis was done through data reduction procedures, data exposure, and making conclusions. The resulting research showed that the field independent students understanding to the concept of SPLTV, namely students stated that the meaning of SPLTV used their own language without being stuck with the notation from SPLTV and students gave examples and non-examples of SPLTV. In addition, in solving problems students are able to use the SPLTV concept well. As the results of the research, the students' understanding of field dependent on the concept of SPLTV is that students explained that the notion of SPLTV was still stuck with the notation of the existing SPLTV and students give examples and non-examples of SPLTV. Moreover, in solving problems, students are less able to use the SPLTV concept well.
