Abstract

Abstract

Mathematical reasoning is the process of thinking in drawing logical conclusions regarding mathematical problems based on statements that are proven to be true and known previously. This research is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach which aims to describe the mathematical reasoning of students who have high, medium and low mathematical abilities in solving realistic problems. The research subjects were 3 class VII junior high school students in Surabaya who represented each category of mathematical ability. The instruments used are mathematical ability tests, mathematical reasoning tests, and interviews. The research results show that students with high and moderate mathematical abilities analyze problems by identifying important information in the problem, proposing conjectures using assumptions based on important information in the problem, and constructing arguments by carrying out detailed calculations on the problem given. In drawing logical conclusions, students with high mathematical abilities draw conclusions based on the completion steps that have been carried out, while students with moderate mathematical abilities draw conclusions based on assumptions and completion steps that have been carried out. Students with low mathematical abilities analyze problems by identifying important information in the problem, put forward conjectures regarding the solution steps taken but do not explain the reasons for choosing the assumptions made, and experience difficulty in constructing arguments because the solution steps are not appropriate so they do not provide accurate conclusions. regarding the correctness of the solution.

Abstract

The low mathematics literacy scores of Indonesian students in the PISA international survey indicate their weak ability to understand and solve mathematics problems. One contributing factor is self-efficacy, which is students' belief in their own ability to solve problems. This study aims to describe the mathematics literacy of junior high school students with high and low self-efficacy in solving contextual problems. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach involving two student subjects selected based on the results of a self-efficacy questionnaire and a mathematics ability test. The research instruments included contextual problems based on personal, social, and scientific contexts with first-order context and second-order context levels, with PISA competency levels 4–6, and semi-structured interview guidelines. The results showed that students with high self-efficacy formulated problems mathematics, by identifying problem information and representing information in mathematics form. Students applied problem-solving strategies appropriate to the problem context and interpreted and evaluated the results by linking them to the problem, although some information in the scientific context had not been considered. Meanwhile, students with low self-efficacy formulate problems, use incomplete solution strategies, and provide answers based on intuition or guesswork without using calculations. Evaluation of results is also often not linked to the context of the problem. These findings reinforce the important role of self-efficacy as an affective factor influencing students' mathematics literacy in solving contextual problems.

Abstract

This study aims to systematically review the development of research on critical thinking in problem posing through bibliometric analysis and descriptive content analysis of Scopus-indexed publications from 2015 to 2025. The results indicate that China, Indonesia, and the United States are the most influential countries in this field, with China occupying the leading position in both publications and citations. The most productive affiliation is the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, and Hwang, G. emerges as the author with the greatest contribution. Publication trends show a sharp increase after 2020, reaching a peak in 2024 with seven published articles. Although critical thinking is strongly connected to problem posing, its relationship with creativity, problem solving, and critical pedagogy remains weak. Content analysis reveals a dominance of quantitative approaches, particularly quasi-experimental designs, with university students as the most frequently studied subjects, purposive sampling as the primary sampling method, and tests as the main measurement instruments. The most commonly used data analysis techniques include descriptive statistics, t-tests, ANOVA, and n-Gain. These findings highlight clear opportunities for further research, particularly in integrating critical pedagogy, creativity, and learning technologies, as well as in more deeply exploring the cognitive processes underlying critical thinking in problem posing.

Abstract

Purpose: This study investigated the conceptions of proof of prospective mathematics teachers’ learning limits, with a particular focus on how these conceptions were manifested in representational activity. Method: A qualitative teaching-research design was used to collect data from 82 first-year prospective mathematics teachers enrolled in a Calculus I course at a public university in Indonesia. The main data were prospective mathematics teachers’ written responses to an ε–δ limit proof task, classroom discussions, and reflective teaching notes. Data was analysed using iterative, thematic coding and constant comparative analysis, following a representational-epistemic framework. Findings: Four qualitatively different conceptions of proof were identified: proof as computation, proof as algebraic procedure, proof as formal display, and proof as logical argument. Most participants used computational or procedural approaches and a small proportion of participants constructed logically coherent deductive arguments. The results indicate that prospective mathematics teachers’ difficulties are not only related to algebraic manipulation but also to understanding the epistemic function of proof in university mathematics. Specifically, ε–δ notation was often taken as a formality of notation rather than as a relational structure for reasoning. Significance: The study adds to research on the secondary–tertiary transition in mathematics education by demonstrating the relationship between prospective mathematics teachers' representational practices and different conceptions of proof. The findings are also relevant to designing introductory calculus instruction to support prospective mathematics teachers’ transition from verifying procedures to deductive justification.
